CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The Charleston man who was shot at an Elkview video lottery parlor he allegedly attempted to rob at gunpoint was arrested after being released from a local hospital.

Lt. Bryan Stover said Chad Wehrle, 29, of Charleston was released from Charleston Area Medical Center's General Hospital on Saturday after receiving treatment for gunshot wounds received in an alleged attempted armed robbery.

Witnesses at Teresa's Cafe on North Pinch Road in Elkview said Wehrle came into the building at about 12:30 a.m. Wednesday carrying a 12-gauge shotgun. The patrons in the cafe, which serves as a video gambling parlor, fell to the floor to protect themselves.

An employee at the parlor retrieved a pistol and fired at the man in self-defense, deputies said. Wehrle then ran out of the bar, but the employee followed. Wehrle fired a shot at the employee and the employee fired back.

Wehrle suffered gunshot wounds to his torso and arm and went to the General Hospital for treatment. The employee was not wounded in the gunfight.

The man was arrested upon his release Saturday and has been charged with armed robbery and wanton endangerment. He was released Monday from South Central Regional Jail on $25,000 bond. Previous reports said the employee stood up to fire at the robber. It would be nice to obtain a detailed account of what happened.

.....wanton endangerment.....

Now there is a charge. Not just endangerment, but wanton endangerment.

One wonders when endangerment escalated to become wanton?

Maybe the judge thought this criminal might want to give the local citizens another opportunity to improve their marksmanship.
