I decided to start at "The Gunslinger" and read the books in order. I leafed through them, and yes, I see what you meant by the artwork.

It's pretty disappointing.

The new version of The Gunslinger?

He edited it after finishing work on the final volumes of the series, and wound up adding 50 or so pages of new material.

Some people say it was just another marketing ploy used in order to squeeze a few more bucks from his publishers, and the public.

I suppose that charge has some merit, although I thought the first book in the Dark Tower series was deeply flawed, especially in comparison to subsequent volumes.

The revised version is much tighter, and more well-written in terms of plot, character development, etc...

At least, that's my opinion.

But yeah, the artwork is a bit of a distraction.

I guess that's what he gets for deciding to prolong this effort over the span of three decades.

I must not have the "new version." And as for him wanting more money...he has so much he'll never be able to spend it, so that doesn't even make any sense to me.

When I read the Gunslinger, it's like stepping into someones' dusty, fragmented mind. I had forgotten it made me feel that way, so I read it again. I'm hoping The Drawing Of The Three doesn't do that to me, or I'll never get beyond it.

have you noticed that doctors simply *must* name mundane things in Latin or Greek? Why, o why, must they call it a "uvula" when the name "snot-wick" would be vastly more apt?

aside from that, have you ever considered the etymology of the family name "Gaylord"?
I would think that in today's clime, such a surname would have become, ah, passe in a mincing rainbow-hued hurry.

The reason I'm still up? Tidying the house, catching up on emails, oh and a chat on MSN Messenger with the lovely Monkey Face. Now I have to prepare for an appointment with my rehabilitation consultant which is in just over four hours.

Trust me, I'll get some sleep! Probably a bit more than my darling man will get, all six feet of him scrunched up in Qantas Cattle Class for fifteen hours across the Pacific Ocean... (at least he gets a little more legroom on American Airlines, for the cross-country JFK-LAX hop. Speaking of which... he'll be getting on that plane in about five hours or so...

That's probably a bit of one-up-mansship from the priest class in dealing with their secular overlords. In the case of the Normans in England in particular, Anglo-Saxon became vulgar to use, and it still is.

On the other hand, one can say things in Latinized phrases that would get you into trouble in the common language.

No, the following volumes are much better, with a more coherent narrative.

In fact, the one you mentioned-the second novel-is one of my favorite parts of The Dark Tower.

I know what you mean though.

I read "The Gunslinger" years ago and it was like going back in time.

The fragmanted tone is a bit off-putting.

Like I said, The Drawing of the Three is much better, and I would probably have began with the newer, revised version if I were just starting the series.
