SACRAMENTO -- The Republican-led campaign to recall Democratic Gov. Gray Davis has collected nearly 400,000 signatures, close to half the number needed to put it on the ballot, elections officials in California counties reported Monday. Recall proponents have claimed they were well on their way to collecting the 897,158 needed valid signatures, but Monday's deadline for counties to report totals to the secretary of state was an important date for them to prove they actually were. The submitted signatures were those collected as of June 16. Many counties said they'd collected thousands of additional signatures since then. Recall supporters...

Memo to My Wife By Senator Tom McClintock Hi Honey, Since you've let me take over our household finances, I'm happy to report that our family budget is balanced, I've saved thousands of dollars, and I've kept us in the style to which I would like to become accustomed. You might wonder how I've been able to do all this. I just followed the easy steps that Gov. Gray Davis outlined in his May Budget Revision. I know you're upset because I spent nearly $11,000 more than we took in this year. You really need to keep things in perspective....

Opponents of Gray Davis Step Up Recall Efforts Opponents of Governor Gray Davis turned up the heat on their effort to have him recalled, as they began collecting signatures at new drive-through petition centers. They have a considerable distance to go, needing to collect 897,000 valid signatures by September 2. At this point, recall supporters have acquired less than 10 percent what they'll need. Those stopping by to sign the petitions felt strongly that the governor has to go. "I'm a teacher and I've been disappointed in the support we've gotten from the governor and I'm very supportive of...

Californians Start Movement to Recall DavisBy John Gizzi Sacramento, Cal.—The talk at the California Republican Party convention here last week centered around the move to recall Democratic Gov. Gray Davis and elect a replacement using a unique provision in California law. Four months after he was re-elected by an unimpressive margin of 47% to 42% over Republican Bill Simon, Davis is sporting a disapproval rating of 72%.His surge in unpopularity derives from his misstatement of the state’s deficit. Before the November election, Davis said it was $25 billion and could be serviced. After the election, he announced it was...

I know a different newspaper story on this topic was already posted but I liked how The Chronicle wrote the final section of their story on the Baldassare poll, so here it is...FULL ARTICLE - Click Here But it's Davis who fares worst in the new survey, which is bad news for a governor facing an enthusiastic recall effort. Only 26 percent of Californians are pleased with the way Davis is handling the state budget and taxes, and even 57 percent of the Democrats are unhappy with the job he's doing. While Davis blames the national economic downturn for...

Drive Launched to Qualify Davis Recall Effort for the Ballot Supporters of an effort to recall Gov. Gray Davis launched their petition drive Saturday. Several hundred activists were at the State Capitol to kick off the effort. Supporters must gather more than 900,000 signatures to qualify the issue for the ballot. Recall supporters are unhappy with the governor's performance, particularly his handling of the budget crisis. "Gray Davis made a lot of promises that got him elected, and now he's falling down on the job, and every day we go deeper and deeper into debt and he's doing nothing,"...

<p>More than 350 Republican activists rallied outside the state Capitol Saturday in support of an effort to recall Democratic Gov. Gray Davis even as some party leaders remained cautious about the recall drive.</p>
<p>"If the petition were put in front of me I'd sign it," Rep. Doug Ose, R-Sacramento, said at the state party convention. But, he added, "The re-election of President Bush is the top priority across this country for every good Republican."</p>

For this Saturday's Recall Gray Davis Rally in Sacramento we were hoping to find a small band (ya know a small brass band that knows a patriotic or festive tune or two). One of the Event Coordinators for the rally thought they had something lined up that would work perfectly but the people were in SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA - ack! Since there will be a huge crowd and a significant media presence we really would benefit from some folks dressed up in patriotics clothes or colors adding some festive noise (before and after the rally). It will also help draw more...

<p>A makeshift group now impetuously trumpets its intention to remove California Gov. Gray Davis. California is a state in the progressive tradition. We have referenda to overturn state laws we don't like and initiatives to pass state laws we want. And we can use the ballot box to change the state constitution itself.</p>
