Kaloogian Working With Leaders From Across the Political Spectrum
to Qualify Recall Gray Davis Effort

(SACRAMENTO) – The Chairman of the Recall Gray Davis Committee, The Honorable Howard Kaloogian (California State Assemblymember 1994 – 2000), announced today that the Libertarian Party of California has officially endorsed the recall of Governor Gray Davis. The endorsement occurred at their state convention this past weekend.

Also endorsing this effort are local chapters of the American Independent Party (AIP) – the third largest political party in the state of California. Representatives from the AIP Party are presently working to secure an endorsement from the entire statewide board.

Endorsement of the recall effort from representatives of additional political parties are expected to also join the recall effort in the coming days.

“I’ve been in contact with leaders from every political party in the state and have been amazed at the willingness of so many people to work together to restore better leadership to our state,” declared Mr. Kaloogian.

“Governor Davis and his political hacks have been trying to portray this recall drive as a Republican-only affair. But Governor Davis lied to ALL Californians when he corruptly hid the seriousness, size and scope of the budget deficit facing the state during his re-election effort. Now he is facing the wrath of ALL Californians.

“Governor Davis knew that if the voters of this state knew the true extent of the budget crisis, they wouldn’t have ever re-elected him. Now voters know about the massive tax increases and dramatic cuts to education, health care, police and fire protection and now they know he lied to us.

“We will qualify this effort as a broad coalition from the left to the right of the political spectrum, and Governor Davis will this time face an electorate that knows the truth,” concluded Kaloogian.

Got the Libertarian Party Press Release they have put out - wooohoooo!

Libertarians Resolve to Recall Davis

ONTARIO, CA --

The Libertarian Party of California has become the first political party to officially endorse the recall of Governor Gray Davis. At their state convention, held over the President's Day weekend in Ontario, the party passed a resolution to support the effort to remove the beleaguered California governor, who enters his second term with an approval rating of 24 percent.

The recall, as authorized by the California Constitution, requires collecting almost 900,000 petitioner's signatures. The daunting task, if successful, would be unprecedented and would exceed even the victory voters achieved with the passage of landmark Proposition 13, whose 25th anniversary taxpayers will celebrate this year.

The Libertarian Party of California recognizes that a successful recall of Governor Davis will require a statewide grass-roots, non-partisan movement. Nevertheless, the group's next step in active support of the recall drive will be to call on other political parties to join them, beginning with the California Republican Party which holds its own convention this coming weekend, February 21-23.

The Libertarian Party will send their newly elected Secretary, Lori Adasiewicz, to address the GOP delegates and entreat them to back the endeavor. Ms. Adasiewicz was chosen by the Libertarians to deliver their message as an invited guest of California Republican Party Chairman Shawn Steel, Esq. who visited the Libertarian convention last Sunday and witnessed the adoption of the resolution to recall Davis.

The Kaloogian effort seems more organized than the Ted Costas effort. Kaloogian is getting an infrastructure in place before he kicks it off and the 160 days start ticking. Costas on the other hand served Davis on the day Powell was speaking to the U.N., guaranteeing a media eclipse, plus the clock is now running and he hasn't gotten the signature gathering effort underway, nor raised the necessary money.

I went to that site, but I am wondering if "endorsing" the petition is the same as signing it? I didn't see a link for "sign the petition", only "request" the petition. Or is it not at that stage yet?

Oh, and Costas was a lousy spokesman on O'Reily the other night. He couldn't answer O'Reilly's question as to what had changed since the election to justify a recall. The obvious answer, that Davis had concealed the extent of the budget deficit until after the election, wasn't brought up.

To those of you who saw Ted Costa get chewed up by O'Reilly (who was prepared to go at poor Ted Costa who didn't realize what he was in store for) you can see the Recall Gray Davis Committee Chairman, Howard Kaloogian, on Buchanan & Press tomorrow on MSNBC.

Kaloogian should be on near the end I believe - sometime around 1:30 - 2:00 EST!

I think you will agree he is a more articulate spokesperson for the Recall Gray Davis effort than Mr. Costa who is a GREAT taxpayers advocate but a lousy spokesperson or media representative.

Good question!

The Secretary of State has 10 days to "certify" the recall petition. I have to check if it is business days or 10 days period.

So the soonest the petitions will be ready (it keeps slipping back but this is OK as the initial push for the recall was WAY too soon before anyone was organized enough to act) will be likely between Feb. 24th and Feb. 27th

The minute the petitions are available, if you have signed up at www.RecallGrayDavis.com you will be notified because the petition will be UPLOADED to the Recall Gray Davis website.

You will be able to download the petition, print it, sign it and get others to sign.

At that time more specific instructions will be given.

To be fair to Ted Costa and his group which will be using the same recall petitions as ours I believe they are also going to *try* to get the petition online at their People's Advocate website.

And I believe BOTH The Recall Gray Davis Committee and People's Advocate will be mailing them out in the regular mail to anyone who has trouble downloading it (and to those without computers obviously!)

If he is recalled, is there a new election or does the Lt. Gov take over?

Well Roger Hedgecock slammed Costa on KOGO Radio in San Diego yesterday over this and got very frustrated - they tried to get Kaloogian on then but I guess couldn't find him as he was travelling. So they got him on today and Hedgecock asked Kaloogian the same question. I held my breath but Kaloogian hit it out of the park (whew!)

I am working with the Recall Gray Davis Committee obviously but I want to be careful not to piss on Costa (and his People's Advocate group) personally because in the end both groups NEED to work together - we all know that. I just hope that People's Advocate hires a press spokesperson to do media interviews because if we all can't answer the media's questions on these issues then Davis will use this in his advertising and that will hurt the cause. Costa's a good guy - just not "spokesperson" material I think!

OK - here is how it will work:

1) Once the Secretary of State certifies the recall petition the proponents (the recall backers) have 160 days to gather the necessary number of signatures. This is 898,000 signatures (12% of the turnout from the last election - which is just 6% of all registered voters). Since you know there will be invalid signatures you realistically need about 1.2 - 1.3 million signatures to have a "buffer" to ensure it qualifies.

2) The Lt. Governor is then tasked with calling a special recall election. He has a time period mandated by law to do this. Bustamante (LG) will hope the signature collectors take a long time to get the necessary signatures because if they do then it just might be long enough so that within the legal guidelines it will be on NEXT MARCH's primary ballot. IF however, we collect the signatures quickly (which is why we are getting organized now) then he has no choice - the law forces a special election.

3) So voters go to the polls. There are TWO questions on the recall election ballot. FIRST: Do you support the recall of Governor Gray Davis. SECOND: In the event the Governor is recalled who do you support.

The recall question (#1) has to receive a majority (50% plus 1) to be successful. If it is, then the top vote-getter in the second question will be the new Governor. The only way the LG becomes Governor is IF he decides to run (big slap in the face to Davis and he better win or else his political career is over) AND he gets the most votes.

There is a question and answer link to these kinds of questions at the Recall Gray Davis Committee website: www.RecallGrayDavis.com/QA.asp

There are two question on the ballot: 1) Shoud Davis be recalled? 2) If he is recalled, who do you want in his place? Number 2 is a list of replacement candidates.

If this happens, it will be interesting to see who the Dems field. Will Bustamente, who has been counting on a 2006 run, bump up his schedule? If Davis isn't recalled, anyone on the Dem side who puts their name in contention has to be concerned about what the relationship with Davis would be like after that.

Sure am! It is odd though with the occassional dead air during commercials since some commercials play (station commercials) but then actual commercial commercials go quiet. So when you are working and it comes back on it can give you quite a jolt as you are lured back to focus on what you are doing during the silence!
