Japan and Germany have agreed to work towards a military logistics pact, a Japanese government official said on Thursday, as Tokyo and Berlin tighten security relations on the back of Russia's invasion of Ukraine and China's growing military might. The official made the comment during an online media briefing following a meeting of the two countries' foreign and defence ministers in Germany. "They agreed to press ahead with coordination to launch negotiations aimed at setting up a legal framework to facilitate joint activities between Japan's Self-Defence Forces and the German military," the official said. Such a pact typically spells out...

Republican Dr. Mehmet Oz leads Democratic Lt. Gov. John Fetterman in their down-to-the-wire Pennsylvania Senate race, according to two polls taken after their debate last week that show the celebrity TV doctor gaining five percentage points on his Democratic rival since late summer. Oz leads Fetterman by one percentage point (47.6% to 46.6%) in a Susquehanna Polling and Research survey and has a two-point lead (48% to 46%) in an Emerson College poll taken after their Oct. 25 showdown in Harrisburg. Fetterman, Pennsylvania’s lieutenant governor, often struggled to answer questions that he read off a closed caption monitor as he...

(WPRI/NEXSTAR) — Billions of dollars in federal aid is being made available to help Americans with their heating bills through the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). The Biden administration said Wednesday that roughly $4.5 billion has been allocated for LIHEAP this winter, to help low-income families pay their energy or utility bills, or, in some cases, to cover the cost of weatherization or repairs. The funds will be distributed to states, territories and tribal governments this week.

By John F. Di Leo When the news media learned that there had been a late-night break-in at Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s San Francisco mansion and even a physical attack on her husband, they jumped on the story. An attack on a Democrat leader’s heavily-guarded home and her spouse within? Ten days before the midterms? What a godsend! In this era of terrible news and even worse polls for the Democrats, this might just be the twist to change the messaging and eke out some victories in this election. So, before much was known, the message went out that Republican rhetoric...

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Thursday on CNN’s “This Morning ” that Republican “emphasis on crime” in the midterm elections is intended to scare voters. Clinton said, “I want to say one word about this emphasis on crime that we’ve seen in every ad that I’ve run across from the Republicans. I find it ironic and frankly disturbing that when Paul Pelosi is attacked by an intruder in his own home with a hammer, the Republicans go silent about that crime. They’re not concerned about voter safety. They just want to keep voters scared because they feel that...

WASHINGTON, DC — As the date of next week's midterm elections approaches, President Joe Biden used his Wednesday night address to warn everyone that the results may not immediately be known because it may take several days for enough Democrat votes to be harvested and double-counted. "Despite the fact that third-world countries around the globe are capable of tallying their votes on the same day as their elections, it's simply not realistic to expect that from the world's most technologically advanced nation," Biden shouted with an unnecessary amount of anger to the assembled crowd made up entirely of White House...

An "evil" mother and her bodybuilder boyfriend have been jailed for life for murdering her teenage son. Agnieszka Kalinowska, 35, and Andrzej Latoszewski, 38, tortured Sebastian Kalinowski at their home in Huddersfield for months before he died in August 2021. The couple were found guilty of murder after a trial at Leeds Crown Court. Kalinowska and Latoszewski were both told they would spend a minimum of 39 years in prison for his killing. Mrs Justice Lambert said it was impossible to watch the CCTV footage, which captured much of Sebastian's abuse in the home, without being "utterly horrified". Her sentencing...

In sweeping new proposals, the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) General Counsel, Jennifer Abruzzo, announced her intention to limit employers in their ability to rely upon commonly used electronic monitoring and management technologies to monitor employee misconduct and performance issues. If adopted by the Board, the General Counsel’s proposals would have an enormous impact on employers in the exercise of their legitimate business interests to manage and monitor employee performance, during work hours, and impose appropriate discipline. Under the previous NLRB framework, employers were free to adopt technological changes that allowed them to more closely monitor employee work activity with...

Results of national education assessments released last week showed unprecedented drops in academic achievement in fourth- and eighth-grade math and reading scores, but black, Hispanic, and low-income Catholic school students outperformed their counterparts in national, charter, and public school averages. Data from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), also known as the “Nation’s Report Card,” revealed a dramatic decline in test scores from 2019, when students were last tested. “A majority of states saw scores decline for fourth- and eighth-graders in mathematics and reading between 2019 and 2022,” the National Center for Educational Statistics (NCES) said in a press...

Former President Trump says that Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) should be impeached if he backs a plan for the debt ceiling to be eliminated over fears that House Republicans could cause the U.S. to default on the nation’s credit. When asked by conservative radio host John Fredericks on Thursday about chatter surrounding the possibility of Congress effectively eliminating the debt limit, the ex-president lambasted the idea. “It’s crazy what’s happening with this debt ceiling. Mitch McConnell keeps allowing it to happen. I mean, they ought to impeach Mitch McConnell if he allows that,” Trump said. “Frankly, something has...

A California professor and former CIA analyst said that white Christian men are poised to start a civil war in America Barbara F. Walter, author of the 2022 book How Civil War Starts, made her inflammatory comments on PBS Tuesday evening while speaking with anchor Hari Sreenivasan. Walter's remarks come just days before the midterm elections, which the left and right alike have been characterizing as a battle over democracy itself. Sreenivasan asked Walter - who said she studied foreign nations on the brink of civil war for the CIA - how far off a war within the US could...

The Cuban Missile Crisis is a malicious misnomer. Cuba never had any nuclear missiles; it temporarily played host to some Soviet ones. The crisis started when Americans put their intermediate-range nuclear missiles in Turkey that posed a new threat the Soviet Union, which responded by placing similar missiles in Cuba, evening the score. The Americans flew into a rage but eventually calmed down and withdrew their missiles from Turkey. The Soviets withdrew their missiles from Cuba and the crisis was over. And so it should be called the American Missile Crisis. What’s happening now couldn’t be more different. Unless you...

FORT WORTH, Texas (BP) — Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary confirmed with Baptist Press today (Oct. 27) that the entity has initiated layoffs a week after announcing steps to rectify a financial environment that could “quickly escalate to a crisis.” “As part of the previously announced intention to implement organizational restructuring, including budget reductions, at the direction of the board of trustees, the interim administration has informed certain staff their employment has been ended,” a statement read. “These have been extremely difficult decisions as we seek to address our current challenges.” When asked by BP if information on the number of...

When people are making statements that are dramatically different than those of others experiencing the same world and the same events, we regard those statements as indicative of psychiatric disfunction. It is hard for me to see our President's last speech as anything other than delusion. I am aware that many other folks interpret the reality gap as mere political posturing, but I can't really endorse that view. Psychiatric conditions in functioning individuals don't diagnose themselves. Children and adults both wander some in the accuracy of their assessments of the world. A careful psychiatrist puts together as broad a picture...

The man accused of attacking House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband could be deported from the U.S. after he is released from custody, the Department of Homeland Security said. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, lodged an “immigration detainer” on 42-year-old Canadian national David DePape, DHS told CNBC. Records show DePape entered the U.S. through the San Ysidro point of entry on the southern border in 2008 as a temporary visitor, officials said. David Wayne DePape, 42, who is charged with breaking into U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's San Francisco home and clubbing her husband in the head with a...
