sorry, I'm in a machining frame of mind today, so a dissertation must follow...

"capping someone" or "I'm'onna cap yo ass!" meaning "to kill or murder" stems directly from the older phrase "bust/burst (a) cap(s)" which derives from cap-and-ball firearms technology of the mid 1800's, wherein the muzzle-loaded chamber is fired by use of a hammer-detonated external explosive percussion-cap (iirc: containing picric acid) mounted on a "nipple" on the chamber.
This technology resulted in "burst caps" as a waste-product.
This technology also gave rise to the phrase "to drop a hammer (on someone)" as the striking mechanisms originally did have the hammer strike downward onto the essentially top-mounted cap.
The percussion cap evolved into the modern integral primer cap in cartridge ammunition, the nipple evolved into the internal anvil plate inside those primers. The principle, however, is identical.
