Ask someone who drives a gasoline-powered car why they wouldn't want to get an electric one, and you're almost certain to hear this answer: they take way too long to charge. They're not even entirely wrong. Even though DC fast charging times are getting shorter and shorter for modern electric vehicles, they can seem totally unacceptable for anyone who's used to fueling a gas-powered car in a matter of minutes—and that still describes most people in this country. To counter this, the Chinese carmaking giant BYD, which recently surpassed Tesla in EV sales, came up with an idea so ambitious...

China’s BYD reported annual revenue of 777 billion yuan ($107 billion) for 2024, leapfrogging Tesla as competition between the two EV rivals heats up. “BYD has become an industry leader in every sector from batteries, electronics to new energy vehicles, breaking the dominance of foreign brands and reshaping the new landscape of the global market,” Wang Chuanfu, chairman and president of BYD, said in a statement. The filing comes shortly after BYD announced a new battery technology that it claims can charge EVs almost as quickly as it takes to fill a gasoline car. Last week, BYD unveiled an ultra-fast...

Stunning drone footage has revealed the sheer scale of Chinese automaker BYD’s vast electric vehicle (EV) mega factory in Zhengzhou, Henan province, that is reportedly larger than the entire city of San Francisco. The sprawling facility, currently under development in eight phases, is set to cover an astonishing 50 square miles (32,000 acres) upon completion - surpassing the size of San Francisco (46.9 square miles). The BYD factory will also dwarf Tesla’s 4.5 square mile Gigafactory in Nevada, The Sun reported. BYD is emerging as one of Tesla’s biggest competitors, and its Zhengzhou mega factory will be over 10 times...

If you've been driving around any major city in Australia lately, chances are you've probably already spotted a new BYD Shark 6 plug-in hybrid electric ute on the road. In the past week, I've personally counted at least 15 on the road in the Sydney area, and they certainly stand out. The first BYD Shark 6 – an all-new model never previously sold in Australia – arrived in local showrooms in mid-January 2025 and already has given the long-standing best-selling utes, the Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux, a run for their money. According to February VFACTS data, 2026 examples of...

The breakthrough represents a turning point in the EV sector as it lets cars go 400 kilometers (249 miles) after a five-minute charge. Addressing a major issue among EV buyers, the Chinese automaker's "super e-platform" seeks to lower charging time to levels similar to gasoline filling. Han L sedan and Tang...

The government of Brazil stopped issuing work visas for Chinese electric carmaker BYD after local authorities rescued 163 Chinese nationals working in conditions “analogous to slavery” at a BYD factory under construction in the city of Camaçari, Bahia, Reuters reported Friday. BYD, a company with deep ties to the Chinese Communist Party, is building the plant at a location once occupied by American carmaker Ford, which sold the location to the local Bahia government in 2023 after Ford ceased all operations in Brazil in 2021. Brazil’s Public Prosecutor’s Office announced on December 23 that construction work on BYD’s factory in...

Vice President Kamala Harris is under fire for accepting campaign contributions — originally sent to President Joe Biden’s presidential campaign before he backed out — from a Chinese auto executive with ties to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). Officials with Driving Force Action PAC wrote to Harris on October 11: We are deeply concerned about the reported $50,000 in political contributions your campaign received from Stella Ke Li, a Chinese national and senior executive at BYD, a Chinese electric vehicle company with close ties to the CCP and a company identified as a national security threat on par with Huawei....

Chinese electric auto-giant BYD has released a bold supercar concept through its premium Fang Cheng Bao brand. The Super 9 rocks no roof, the barest hint of windscreen, and lascivious scissor doors – and it's apparently headed for production. BYD is the world’s largest EV producer. It produced 20% of the 10 million EVs sold globally last year, from Tesla (13%), Volkswagen (9%) and General Motors (6%) – those are all very rough figures for simplification purposes. For stats – go here. It is also the dominant brand in the world’s largest and fastest growing automotive market, at a time...

In recent months Tesla has had a bumpy ride. In January the electric-vehicle (ev) pioneer warned that growth would be “notably lower” this year, as motorists’ enthusiasm for battery power loses charge. The same month it had to suspend most production at its giant factory near Berlin because of supply disruptions caused by turmoil in the Red Sea. Its market share in China, the world’s biggest ev market, is falling as it fends off cheaper local competition, especially from byd, which late last year briefly eclipsed Tesla as the world’s biggest ev-maker. Tesla hit another big pothole on April 2nd,...

China's BYD is leaving rivals behind in both China's and global EV markets. Image: BYD BYD overtook Tesla to become the world’s largest supplier of battery-powered electric vehicles in the fourth quarter of 2023, by a substantial margin of 526,000 to 484,000 units sold. But in China, the race for market dominance isn’t nearly as close. Indeed, Volkswagen, BMW, Toyota, Honda, Nissan and several Chinese companies outpace Tesla in the overall Chinese auto market. American and European politicians who are fond of ranting about China’s closed markets should take note that Chinese consumers appreciate German and Japanese quality like almost...

hinese electric-vehicle giant BYD is thinking about building a car assembly plant in Mexico. That’s one way to crack the U.S. market. The possibility of a BYD plant in this region is a big deal and while Tesla, General Motors, and Ford Motor have time to prepare they should start getting ready right now. Wednesday, Nikkei Asia reported that BYD was considering building a car plant in Mexico. Ultimately, that would be the avenue for BYD cars to enter the North American market. BYD didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment about its expansion plans. “The company’s spokesperson did...

A decade ago, Elon Musk laughed off the threat posed by Chinese electric carmaker BYD. He's not laughing now. The Tesla CEO warned investors in a recent earnings call that Chinese EV firms will "demolish" their Western rivals if trade barriers aren't put in place to limit their expansion, after BYD finally overtook Tesla as the world's top seller of electric cars. "The Chinese car companies are the most competitive car companies in the world," Musk told investors during Tesla's Q4 earnings call. "If there are no trade barriers established, they will pretty much demolish most other car companies in...
