If you've been driving around any major city in Australia lately, chances are you've probably already spotted a new BYD Shark 6 plug-in hybrid electric ute on the road.
In the past week, I've personally counted at least 15 on the road in the Sydney area, and they certainly stand out.
The first BYD Shark 6 – an all-new model never previously sold in Australia – arrived in local showrooms in mid-January 2025 and already has given the long-standing best-selling utes, the Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux, a run for their money.
According to February VFACTS data, 2026 examples of the Shark 6 were delivered to owners in February alone, placing it behind the Ford Ranger 4x4 with 3782 deliveries and the HiLux with 3099.
However, the Shark 6 trumps other big 4x4 players such as the Isuzu D-Max (1593), Mitsubishi Triton (1242), and Mazda BT-50 (1176), leading it to not only be the third best-selling ute in Australia in February but also the sixth best-selling car overall.

When was the last time it snowed in Sydney?
28 June 1836
Snow is extremely rare in Sydney, with significant snowfall being last reported in the Sydney area on 28 June 1836.
It looks OK for a quasi useful, occasional off-road p/u [slash] electric golf cart.
Me? I don’t need one.
Because they’re owned by China
The BYD logo is hideous
Heh. It’s worse in the rear view mirror.
Looks kinda Fordy.
If I ever even thought of buying an EV, it sure as hell wouldn’t be Chinese, and most certainly wouldn’t be BYD. The City of Albuquerque tried rolling out a fleet of BYD electric buses a few years back. The word “boondoggle” is an understatement. Not only that, but I wouldn’t trust the Chinese and inch on this. They probably have something in the circuitry that could be used as a remote kill switch.
Good luck, walking from the EV “gas station” . . . carrying batteries 3 miles back to your BYD.
What’s the Chicom industrial subsidy on this that makes an attractive price point four Aussies?
Australia may be even more ill-suited to EVs than the United States is. Vast distances through sparsely-populated areas, harsh climate conditions, the works. Ah well, I’m sure the PLA engineers will get that all sorted out quickly, so no worries!
“The BYD logo is hideous”
Their quality is even more hideous.

I think he’s been hanging around The Dobie Brothers a little too much...
oh, wait...
something “D-O-O........”
The auto mentioned in the article is a plugin hybrid, so the ICE engine kicks in when the battery runs out of juice..
Sydney, and most of coastal NSW, is very well populated. The city is surprizingly hilly and many of the suburban developments have very narrow streets, almost like allys. Road Warrior country is far away. A compact truck would do well there. Oddly, scooters and small motorbikes are common in Sydney, and you will not see many full sized motorcycles or cruisers until you get to Queensland.
