BYD Unveils High-Speed EV Charging Platform, Doubling Tesla's Speed; Stock Hits Record High
Yahoo Finance ^ | 03/19/25

BYD (BYDDF, Financials) introduced a new electric vehicle platform reportedly capable of reaching charging speeds of up to 1,000 kilowatts, twice the capacity of Tesla's (TSLA, Financials) latest 500 kW superchargers. Shares rose as much as 6.0% to a record HK$408.80 ($52.61) early Tuesday before paring gains to 3.2%.

The breakthrough represents a turning point in the EV sector as it lets cars go 400 kilometers (249 miles) after a five-minute charge.

Addressing a major issue among EV buyers, the Chinese automaker's "super e-platform" seeks to lower charging time to levels similar to gasoline filling. Han L sedan and Tang L SUV will be the first to adopt the technology, starting at 270,000 yuan ($37,328.91).

With projections of 56 million sales in 2025 and 4.2 million cars delivered in 2024, BYD intends to introduce 4,000 ultra-fast charging stations all throughout China.

The action coincides with rising Chinese automakers investing in charging infrastructure. Up until recently, BYD owners had depended on outside charging stations run by rivals.Since 2014, Tesla has set up superchargers in China, therefore establishing early presence in the market. High-speed charging networks are becoming more and more important as competition rises in order to hasten EV acceptance.

I keep telling people the EV technology will catch up.

People sneer at EVs the same way they used to sneer at hybrids.

As has been pointed out in numerous prior threads, the infrastructure required by the physics of this type of massive current transfer is not currently feasible at scale. Additionally, current batteries will suffer immensely in terms of loss of capacity.

It will work in China because they are still bringing one huge coal fired generating unit on line every week.

“People sneer at EVs the same way they used to sneer at hybrids.”

Some here sneer at cellphones, particularly smart phones.

My personal preference has always been this — GET GOVERNMENT OUT OF THE BUSINESS OF PICKING AND CHOOSING WHICH TYPE OF VEHICLES PEOPLE SHOULD DRIVE.

Let the makers compete to produce something that is value for money.

Eventually, technology and innovation will meet what customers demand.

Take yer pick:

A. This exciting new technology will revolutionize the electric vehicle market.
B. Sounds good. But no real proof yet.
C. This is just another instance of a stock market “pump and dump”.

Given that the news is coming out of Communist China, I am inclined to not pick choice A.

And spent batteries will leave behind a staggering environmental disaster that has to be dealt with.

I wonder what would be more cost effective.....

Taking fines the government may impose on you for failure to make the quota on EV production....

Or continue to lose billions of dollars making them?

No argument, but the technology is not there yet.

I keep yelling people that almost half the hones in this country still gave a 60 A service.

That even if you have a 200A service, you might not he able to afford the electricity.

And even if you have the power and the money, you still might not be able to charge it at home thanks to zoning codes.

EVs are fine for anyone who wants them, but I won’t be trading in my ICE vehicles any time soon.

This time it’s happening for sure. The Chinese wouldn’t lie.

There's a growing phenomenon in China of EV owners simply abandoning their cars. It's becoming a problem for local governments.

They typical insane competition within China of various government-supported producers means most producers lose money, so they cut corners everywhere and quality is low.

Due to this, problems arise in parts unfixable by private citizens or repair shops - software and batteries. One must go to a company-designated repair outlet

Costs for common repairs then are often higher than the original cheap sticker-price of the car

Unable to fix the cars, and unable to sell them, people then just abandon them.

Not just the tech.

The grid, fire codes, zoning codes, insurance issues...

I’ll take a look at one when all that gets sorted.

BYD on Monday unveiled a new platform for electric vehicles (EVs) that it said could charge EVs as quickly as it takes to pump gas,,,,. The so-called "super e-platform" will be capable of peak charging speeds of 1,000 kilowatts (kW)
Keep in mind that EV batteries degrade with time, and thus require more frequent recharging. That is comparable to the gas tank in your ICE car getting smaller every time you fill it up.

Also the claimed 400-mile range is for fresh batteries, optimal driving conditions and speed, and no A/C or heating being used.

And where are these supposed 1 MEGAWATT recharging stations going to be located? In some local Walmart parking lot? Along the highway through the cornfield of Iowa? Or more likely, next to a nuclear reactor power plant?!?

The gas engine is the most efficient transportation ever invented. The most perfect system period.

“People sneer at EVs the same way they used to sneer at hybrids.”

Plug in hybrids are the ultimate solution. The automobile manufacturers can churn them out at will. My opinion, is they hold back on plug-ins, so they can charge 5-7 thousand more than for an identical hybrid. Adding plug-in capability costs them what? $500?

Anyone that wants an EV should get one. Anyone that wants a gas car should get one. 71% of EV owners also own gas cars.

Better keep an emergency generator with your EV in case there's a line at that 1 Megawatt recharging station.
