Shares in Chinese EV giant BYD surged to a record high Tuesday after it unveiled new battery technology it says can charge a vehicle in the same time it takes to fill up a petrol car.
The company said the battery and charging system, called "Super e-Platform", boasted peak speeds of 1,000 kW, allowing cars to travel up to 470 kilometres (292 miles) after being plugged in for just five minutes.

LMAO ya I will believe it when it is real.
Also OMG the heat from such a fast energy transfer, I would not want to be anywhere near that thing!!!
You can’t get something done for nothing in physics, at least not in classical physics.

That is impressive, but the problem is that most “Climate Changer EV fanatics” don't understand that the shorter the charging time, the more infrastructure (wires, transformers, transmission lines and power plants) that an electric utility needs to supply. The original concept was that commuter EV’s would be charged slowly overnight when the power demand was at its lowest point. Fast charging makes the “system economics” of EV’s worse.

I'm skeptical. That is a whole lot of electrons to pack through a consumer grade pipe in 5 minutes.
What could possibly go wrong?

Just for a perspective 1000 KW’s can power a home for a little over a month and they are supposedly transferring that much in 5 minutes.
Ya I am just not buying it, especially as a consumer product.

They may as well call it a "flux capacitor"

the battery and charging system,
sounds like a special battery required...

What effect will it have on battery life?
To: alternatives?
I would guess a 1 time use with the small print (if it does not explode on first charge)

“1,000 kW”
that’s a megawatt, of course.

Also OMG the heat from such a fast energy transfer, I would not want to be anywhere near that thing!!! Connect cable to car. Set a timer to power on after 30 seconds. Then RUN like hell away from it!

An 8 bay EV charging facility would require a minimum of 10 MVA of electrical delivery services. That would be sufficient to run a medium size factory or the entire electrical demand for a town of 3,000 people. And that’s for just ONE recharging facility.

Just for a perspective 1000 KW’s can power a home for a little over a month and they are supposedly transferring that much in 5 minutes. You're confusing Power (KW) with Energy (KW-HR).
1000KW is a rate at which charge is delivered, whether for 1 second, 5 minutes, or a month, it's a RATE.
What powers a house for a month is an amount of ENERGY, that's KW-HRs.
1000KW for 5 minutes is 1000/12 KW-HR that is about 83KW-HR. The average American home uses about 30KW-HR per day. So the total energy transferred in 5 minutes is enough to power a house for maybe 3 days. Not a month.

I think you meant 1000 kwhr (energy) not kw (power)
The amount of energy a 1000kw source delivers in 5 minutes is roughly 100kwhr - one tenth of what a house would use in a month.
