We trace his genius. The term “genius” is far too often, bandied about – alongside its catchall companion, “icon.” But in the case of John Williams both words apply, while barely doing justice to the magnitude of his talent. John Williams isn’t just a soundtrack composer, he is the undisputed master of the film score. He is also a creator of contemporary classical music with a post-romantic style, and a grand conductor, pianist, and jazz buff who used to play...

LeBron James, who was among several Lakers players who weren’t available Tuesday night, will missed his 18th game of the season when he sat against the San Antonio Spurs, likely bringing an end to a legendary record. James’ absence against the Spurs will prevent him from reaching the NBA’s 65-game threshold for end-of-season award considerations, meaning he won’t be eligible for All-NBA honors. The 41-year-old James has been named to league-record 21 consecutive All-NBA teams, starting with second team honors following 2004-05, his second season in the league, and continuing through 2024-25, when he was also named to the second...

AbstractThe Homeric epics are among the greatest masterpieces of literature, but when they were produced is not known with certainty. Here we apply evolutionary-linguistic phylogenetic statistical methods to differences in Homeric, Modern Greek and ancient Hittite vocabulary items to estimate a date of approximately 710-760 BCE for these great works. Our analysis compared a common set of vocabulary items among the three pairs of languages, recording for each item whether the words in the two languages were cognate - derived from a shared ancestral word - or not. We then used a likelihood-based Markov chain Monte Carlo procedure to estimate...

A quiet cold war is happening across America — one that many Americans might not be aware of if they’re not tuned into the changes underway in America’s Christian communities. …But after the Halloween …She started complaining of stomach aches daily, some days even being physically sick. We took her to doctors multiple times to see if there was anything physically wrong with her – the only time there was, it was a severe urinary tract infection she’d got from not going to the toilet at school because some of the toilet doors did not lock – but all her symptoms boiled down to one common problem: anxiety. But Manhattan Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal said in an interview Tuesday that he and other New York City-area politicians would reraise the flag at the federal monument...
