…But after the Halloween …She started complaining of stomach aches daily, some days even being physically sick.
We took her to doctors multiple times to see if there was anything physically wrong with her – the only time there was, it was a severe urinary tract infection she’d got from not going to the toilet at school because some of the toilet doors did not lock – but all her symptoms boiled down to one common problem: anxiety.
When we raised this concern with her teachers we were told that Olivia would not talk in class, either to her classmates or to any of her teachers. The school had done their best to bring her out of herself by putting her in groups to discuss her emotions, but nothing would work.
It got to the point where Olivia had become so school avoidant that I would often have to drag her there kicking and screaming, leaving us both in tears.
…
The school was hesitant to deregister her at first. They believed there were other paths we could go down before pulling her out of school altogether, but after explaining our reasons to the head teacher, he agreed that it was the best plan going forward.
Some family members were also concerned that, because Olivia was already a shy child, she might then struggle to socialise if we took her away from her friends.
…
Now that social interaction is on her terms rather than being forced on her, Olivia has really come out of her shell… Olivia is smashing learning targets left, right and centre (and) she’s back to being our funny, full-of-beans little girl.

Because school is so good at that.
Damn the liberals to hell - all of them.
https://www.pacificresearch.org/why-are-teachers-mostly-liberal/
The Washington Post reported on research, conducted by Verdant Labs using political-contribution data, on the Democrat-Republican divide based on job type.
While it unsurprising that among actors and actresses there are 90 Democrats for every 10 Republicans, many would be amazed to discover that teachers are actually as liberal or even more so than those in acting.
Among English teachers, there are 97 Democrats for every three Republicans, with the proportion being even more one-sided among health teachers, with 99 Democrats for every one Republican.
While there are slightly more Republicans among math and science teachers, among high school teachers overall, there are 87 Democrats for every 13 Republicans.
Two friends, plus another father I knew about . . . all three lost their teenagers to: "social media"
Exactly.
Ping
Even never having experienced fatherhood myself I can not imagine a child of mine at the very least going to a private school. I’ll someday regret not having kids. Today, not so much.
Being a math and science kind of guy I HATED English! (And most of my English teachers). I suppose that is reflected in my posts here.
A friend of mine retired from a public high school.
This mirrors what he said.
Every high school English teacher and History teacher, was a socialist - more than 50 years ago.
CORRECTION: 1 English teacher was not a socialist. He was formerly a naval architect and thought, practically. Had some of his naval architect draftings in his office.
In my HS in the 80s I had an English teacher who had us read Ayn Rand’s Anthem. Before announcements over the intercom, she’d always say “….here are some things before Big Brother speaks to us…”
She’d be burned at the stake today.
I had an real old English teacher who was a seventh day adventist. He had a heart attack. In order to get it all over with he started running all the time. Turns out that improved his health by a lot. Very interesting fellow. One of the only English teachers I ever liked .
In the Navy I was introduced to Ayn Rand by a shipmate. It was shortly after Rand had already died .
Teachers’ colleges were captured by “Progressives” as they were formed in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The effects are now being fully felt.
The early Progressives were pro-American, such as Theodore Roosevelt. The Progressive movement became ever more globalist with Woodrow Wilson, FDR, and the vast majority after 1960.
Mindless trivia: Rand died the day after John Belushi died.
What book was your first?
Anthem is a great Point of Entry…it’s short, not too deep, and very impactful. Plus it’s the basis for Rush’s 2112.
In contrast, it took me 3 minutes to read one page of Atlas Shrugged.
Putting a shy girl in a group to discuss her emotions. Really?
Indeed. That was perhaps the most astounding part of the article.
It’s like they were trying to make it worse.
If I had the right sort of parenting, I would have preferred homeschooling to public school.
”explaining our reasons”….explaining to the government? Keep your powder dry.
