(AP) - ATLANTA (AP) — When she ended her first bid to become Georgia governor in 2018, Stacey Abrams announced plans to sue over the way the state’s elections were managed. More than three years later, as she makes another run at the governor’s mansion, the lawsuit is going to trial. Filed in November 2018 by Abrams’ Fair Fight Action organization, the suit alleged that state officials “grossly mismanaged” the election, depriving some citizens, particularly low-income people and people of color, of their right to vote. The lawsuit originally called for a sweeping overhaul of the state’s elections, but its...

“‘For I say to you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven’” (Matthew 5:20). Many people today—and sadly, more and more within the church—have redefined biblical concepts to fit their own human perspectives. Like the scribes and Pharisees, religionists know they can’t match God’s righteousness, so they simply change the definition of holiness. A prime example from Old Testament times is how the Jews reinterpreted God’s command, “Consecrate yourselves therefore, and be holy, for I am holy” (Lev. 11:44). They turned this from a call for inner holiness...

The U.S. federal tax code, ratified in 1913, started at around 27 pages, but is now estimated to be 6,571 pages for the 2021 tax year. If the dense language has you frustrated, you’re not alone. Tax laws can be complicated, whether they’re federal or state. There are many confusing laws with seemingly undecipherable sentences or weird distinctions between what is and is not taxable — the difference can seriously impact your money. We all know we need to get our taxes wrapped up before the April 18 deadline, but if you feel like procrastinating, let’s take a break from...

A fireball that blazed through the skies over Papua New Guinea in 2014 was actually a fast-moving object from another star system, according to a recent memo(opens in new tab) released by the U.S. Space Command (USSC). The object, a small meteorite measuring just 1.5 feet (0.45 meter) across, slammed into Earth's atmosphere on Jan. 8, 2014, after traveling through space at more than 130,000 mph (210,000 km/h) — a speed that far exceeds the average velocity of meteors that orbit within the solar system, according to a 2019 study of the object published in the preprint database arXiv. 2019...

Two decades worth of observations revealed unexpected cooling of the solar system's most distant planet Neptune amid its astronomical summer. Neptune is orbiting 30 times farther away from the sun than Earth with one year lasting 165 Earth years. The ice giant's seasons, too, last much longer than those on Earth — more than 40 Earth-years each. As the planet moved into its southern summer over the past two decades, astronomers observed its average global temperatures plummet by a staggering 14 degrees Fahrenheit (8 degrees Celsius). The observed cooling, however, wasn't uniform, the researchers said in the statement. Measurements of...

God’s FootprintsScience makes faith plausible, not impossible.Andrew Klavan’s reference to the popular Bell Curve meme calls to my mind one particularly provocative version of that meme, in which the three figures representing the different levels of insight and intelligence address the relationship between science and belief in God.The dullard on the left-hand tail of the curve says, “don’t listen to science, all the answers come from God.” The representative of conventional wisdom sitting at the top of the curve says, “God isn’t real. You should trust the science.” But then, as in all versions of the meme, a twist occurs....

Google, for example, is rumored to launch its first Pixel Watch in the spring or fall. Fitbit, which Google owns, could also release its first watch running on Wear OS. A Pew Research Report from 2020 says 1 in 5 Americans use a smartwatch or fitness tracker, while Counterpoint Research's data says the...

Hundreds of chemical compounds were screened on cell cultures representing different stages and subtypes of bladder cancer and several promising agents with inhibitory (growth-inhibiting) effects were identified. A drug used to treat childhood leukemia was found to have good efficacy in two specific types of bladder cancer. Shahrokh Shariat and Walter Berger screened various drugs. They investigated the effects of more than 1,700 chemical compounds on 23 commercially available cell lines representing different stages and subtypes of bladder cancer. The scientists were able to identify over 470 substances with inhibitory (growth-inhibiting) effects. These included a large number of drugs already...

This Historic Community Is Pushing the Nation Toward a Wind Power Revolution Block Island, off the New England coast, overcame political strife to lead the way on energy independence 15 miles off the coast at its farthest point, has always been at the mercy of the four winds. Raging winter gusts have been known to rip porches off houses and knock stones off the rock walls that lattice the island’s meadows and pastures. More regularly, breezes delivered to residents the drone of enormous diesel-burning generators, the Rhode Island community’s sole source of power. No one liked it, “but that was...
