On this date in 1916, the Austro-Hungarian empire executed Cesare Battisti and Fabio Filzi for treasonous Italian nationalism. It was the multiethnic Habsburg state that was itself dying of its constituents’ national aspirations; in little more than two years, the state entity that carried out this day’s sentences would no longer exist at all. Pre-World War I, Battisti (English Wikipedia entry | Italian) was actually a Socialist representative in the Austrian parliament. When the unpleasantness broke out, though, he made a break for the peninsula where he agitated* (successfully) for Italian entry into the fray against Austria-Hungary. Irredentists had long...

“The Kepler and K2 missions just keep on giving!” Harvard astrophysicist, David Latham told The Daily Galaxy. “Operations ended more than three years ago when the spacecraft ran out of fuel, but we continue to mine the data archives for celestial gems.” “We know the spacecraft’s retirement isn’t the end of Kepler’s discoveries,” said Jessie Dotson, Kepler’s project scientist at NASA’s Ames Research Center in California’s Silicon Valley. “I’m excited about the diverse discoveries that are yet to come from our data and how future missions will build upon Kepler’s results.” “The Search for Planets is the Search for Life”...

Sen. Marco Rubio accused the Biden administration Sunday evening of silence on Cuba after a day of the biggest anti-regime demonstrations in decades. The Florida Republican had spent much of the day tweeting about 20 videos of protests against the communist dictatorship, and then he noted that President Biden had been maintaining radio silence. “The people of #Cuba bravely take to the streets against 62 years of socialist tyranny. 12 hours later President @joebiden @POTUS has yet to say a word about it,” Mr. Rubio wrote.

President Joe Biden’s top medical adviser, Dr. Anthony Fauci, said there should be more COVID-19 vaccine mandates at the local level. “I have been of this opinion, and I remain of that opinion, that I do believe at the local level, Jake, there should be more mandates,” Fauci, who has become perhaps the federal government’s public face regarding its COVID-19 response, told CNN on Sunday in reference to vaccine mandates. “There really should be. We’re talking about [a] life-and-death situation. We’ve lost 600,000 Americans already, and we’re still losing more people.” Fauci then said that if the Food and Drug...

The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has relied on a series of economic lies to sway many people’s perceptions of the current situation. In this article, we look at some of the biggest lies and present the true picture behind those lies. The First Economic Lie: Development Is the Absolute PrincipleIn the past decades, the biggest lie of the CCP’s economic policies is “development is the absolute principle,” a statement made by CCP’s leader Deng Xiaoping during his southern China tour in 1992.Since then, justifying things as “development” has become the best excuse to cover up mistakes, which became justified and unquestionable.In...

The city’s public housing authority has long insisted that weak air circulation inside aging apartments did not contribute to the spread of COVID-19 among tenants during the pandemic’s peak last year. But internal emails obtained by THE CITY reveal some top NYCHA managers were warned repeatedly as pandemic raged through the five boroughs last spring that poorly ventilated apartments could accelerate the transmission of the virus that’s killed more than 33,000 New Yorkers. A consultant hired by the authority urged NYCHA managers in notes week after week to kickstart a stalled plan to improve air circulation in bathrooms and kitchens...

We’re at war over Critical Race Theory. That seems a reasonable conclusion, as forces presently fight for and against the ideology. While legislatures move to ban CRT, academia and industry are increasingly embracing it (see “College President Claims ‘Critical Race Theory Is the New Communism,’ Means It as a Compliment“)Such is certainly the case at Columbia University, where the school’s president finds the doctrine not only alright, but “necessary.”And not only that, but “urgent.”For a July 1st CRT article, Columbia News interviewed law school instructors, as well as the college’s Big Cheese, Lee C. Bollinger.President Lee was clear:“Critical Race Theory and the...

As we previously reported there are thousands out in the streets across Cuba, from small towns to big cities, calling for freedom from the Communist government and chanting “we are not afraid!”People are saying it’s the largest mass protest since 1959. If you know your Cuban history, that’s the last time the government changed hands — when Fidel Castro took power. So, that’s an incredibly significant thing to say.I have been covering Cuba since the 1994 rafter crisis. I have never ever seen anything like the protests today.https://t.co/h8Ukuvpfp3— Frances Robles (@FrancesRobles) July 11, 2021From NY Times: Carolina Barrero, a Cuban...

Has “Public Order” Enthroned Diabolical Disorientation? In his September 1965 intervention read during the Second Vatican Council, Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre began his criticism of the Declaration on Religious Liberty, Dignitatis Humanae, with a brief summary of the document’s principles:“Founded on the dignity of the human person, religious liberty demands equal rights in civil society for all forms of worship. Society must then be neutral and guarantee the protection of every religion, within the limits of public order.”f American readers view this as reasonable and consistent with principles we generally find in the United States, there is good reason. As Michael Davies...

The knee-jerk reaction to Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett’s first term was that she was less conservative than some had hoped and others had feared. But those judgments are likely to be premature, because the real tests for Barrett will come over the next year...The 49-year-old Barrett, for example, was lampooned by Democrats as a threat to health care during her confirmation hearings last year, but then ruled against a challenge to the Affordable Care Act in this year’s term.Barrett is likely to be a crucial and possibly a deciding vote on two huge cases on hot-button culture war issues:...

Citing Florida’s economic policies and living standards, Wall Street executives are requesting transfers from New York to Florida. Many analysts state that bankers’ desire to move out of New York is creating a headache for recruiters as investment firms attempt to reopen their offices. Job headhunters say banks such as JPMorgan and Goldman Sachs have what is being described as a waiting list of executives looking to move to the Sunshine State primarily because of its lower cost of living, but also because of other quality of life issues including a lower crime rate. Manhattan, where both firms are located,...

Eric Adams won the Democrat primary for mayor in New York City because he campaigned on a law-and-order platform. The New York Times found his popularity mystifying and disturbing because he refused to play to the stereotype that Blacks hate the police. If that wasn’t a strong enough signal that the Defund the Police movement is hostile to people living in crime-ridden neighborhoods, Black families in Oakland stood shoulder-to-shoulder with the police against Antifa’s “defund the police” madness. Make no mistake about Eric Adams: He’s a leftist. However, he’s a leftist who understands that even socialism needs a functioning infrastructure,...
