JOHANNESBURG, July 11 (Reuters) - Shops were looted overnight, a section of highway was closed and stick-wielding protesters marched through Johannesburg on Sunday, as sporadic violence following the jailing of former South African President Jacob Zuma spread.

The unrest had mainly been concentrated in Zuma's home province of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), where he started serving a 15-month sentence for contempt of court on Wednesday night. read more

President Cyril Ramaphosa said on Sunday there was no justification for violence and that it was damaging efforts to rebuild the economy amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Zuma's sentencing and imprisonment have been seen as a test of the post-apartheid nation's ability to enforce the law fairly - even against powerful politicians - 27 years after the African National Congress (ANC) ousted white minority rulers to usher in democracy. read more

But his incarceration has angered Zuma's supporters and exposed rifts within the ANC.

Police said criminals were taking advantage of the anger to steal and cause damage.

National intelligence body NatJOINTS warned that those inciting violence could face criminal charges.

NatJOINTS said in a statement that 62 people had been arrested in KZN and Gauteng, the country's main economic hub where Johannesburg is located, since the violence began.

OPPORTUNISTIC CRIMINALS

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) said there had been looting in the Alexandra township and Jeppestown suburb on Saturday night.

Now there's an oxymoron if I've ever seen one. Ya think? What else is new?

RE: Stay clear of the intersection of MLK Blvd & Malcolm X Drive.

Heck, when I was there, almost everything is named after Nelson Mandela.

Why would Johannesburg have streets named after Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcom X?

They might have streets named after Nelson Mandela and Steven Biko.

“President Cyril Ramaphosa said on Sunday there was no justification for violence and that it was damaging efforts to rebuild the economy amid the COVID-19 pandemic.”

He did alot more than that. He called out the Zulu tribe by name and blamed them for the violence.

Zuma is a corrupt African National Congress gangster. He stole a lot of money and property (including farmer’s lands of the Boers). The evidence is in the Panama Papers-— for starters.

At his inauguration they sang the “Shoot the Boer” song against whites. But now the Zulu realize the ANC is after their land as well as white farmers— that the ANC and Ramaphosa are COMMUNISTS- and murderers. The Zulu have aligned with the Boer. The ANC and the Commies may find themselves on the definite wrong side of history. But not if the Chi-Coms are supporting them. A lovely country gone haywire thanks to American and Brit Leftists and Commies— and don’t forget the DeBeers useless diamond cartel of ripoff agencies.

See: Zimbabwe formerly Rhodesia.

“Just wait ‘till The Fey Wray locks Trump up...”

I realise its every flaming liberal and never trumper wet dream....I’d be surprised if they go there...they are crazy...not stupid....what they clearly desire...and what they are capable of...are 2 different things...

It’s far too early for them to go full banana republic...they haven’t purged the military and govt agencies of every patriot yet...they haven’t sufficiently indoctrinated a majority of the population...nor have they disarmed us...and their blatantly obvious moves to cement permanent power and shove their marxist policies down America’s throat does not go unnoticed...

I suspect this full court push America to the left will be met with a serious backlash in the coming midterms...

Time will tell...

You seem pretty well versed in South African history and current events.

What a shame what has happened to that country.

Seems it was a great idea to have the savages run the show.

The Afrikaners refused to include the "natives" in the government until 1994 so it's not too surprising that the country is a $#ithole. They wanted cheap labor but at the same time they refused to allow them to vote.

Been watching the British-Irish Lions during their tour of South Africa. They are playing in giant empty stadiums. No one in the seats. RSA appears to be pretty much shut down.
