On this date in 1916, the Austro-Hungarian empire executed Cesare Battisti and Fabio Filzi for treasonous Italian nationalism.
It was the multiethnic Habsburg state that was itself dying of its constituents’ national aspirations; in little more than two years, the state entity that carried out this day’s sentences would no longer exist at all.
Pre-World War I, Battisti (English Wikipedia entry | Italian) was actually a Socialist representative in the Austrian parliament.
When the unpleasantness broke out, though, he made a break for the peninsula where he agitated* (successfully) for Italian entry into the fray against Austria-Hungary. Irredentists had long coveted Habsburg properties with a heavy Italian population, like the Adriatic port of Trieste and Battisti’s own native Trento; the war offered an opportunity to swipe those territories, notwithstanding Italy’s putative prewar alliance with the Austrians.....

Heh .., just moments ago I read a reply to a post I wrote on another forum where the resident nitwit there swore nationalism was a fascist thing, unknown to socialists or communists.
One of my great uncles was a chef to Archduke Ferdinand. Completely irrelevant, since Ferd was off’d in 1914.
The Chinese would be fascinated to know that communists were not dreaded “nationalists”.
....except that fascists ARE socialists. The National Socialist German Workers Party for example.
I know … but the guy’s sometimes a lie a minute when it comes to his facts.
Here’s where he and his kind never get it.
The biggest thing about the internationalism of the Socialists (and by extension most all of the modern Left) isn’t about some mythic plurality as they claim but rather people not getting to have their own nations, or their own cultures, or anything of their own … everything HAS to be thrown into the blender and frappe bottom pressed.
They think that’s somehow better than nations!
But it’s really just the most aggressive form nationalism dolled and tarted up in deceitful self serving propaganda claiming that it isn’t.
Oh, I know.
This whole left - right thing with fascism is just an artifact of where people once sat in a number of legislatures!
The post I mentioned was in response to a third forumite wondering about the use of fascist when it came to Democrats. I wrote….
Fascism is a political doctrine created by men who gave up on socialism but still held the exact same underlying worldview, opinion of the role of government, and of ordinary people to get by without being managed. They were simply deviant far Leftwingers who were only the “Right” because of a seating convention used in certain legislatures but which really had nothing to do with underlying ideology.
Fascism, first called Corporatism, basically represents an alliance between big government and big business to obtain socialism’s goals of eliminating poverty via full employment. It’s sin as a Leftist ideology is rejection redistribution of wealth and imagining that government needs partners. In that it is actually the moderate form of the moral and ideological train wreck that the far Left spans.
Which is to say it’s still a moral and ideological train wreck even without all that neopagan racist Nazi BS.
You will not find Adam Smith wisdom about economics or the Founding Fathers anywhere in the ideological arc between fascism to communism. It is a lie propagated by the poorly named progressives that they would be, lies useful to that sorry lot as it pretended to represent an extension of Classic American Liberalism rather than a rejection of it. Early “progressives” were actually in line with the French Revolution and the 1st Republic that proceeded with The Terrors.
As a thoroughly middle classed take on socialist ideals, representing the alliance between big business and big government, the American Left is very, very fascistic. With AntiFa or BLM they’ve even got their own version of the Brownshirts.
Yes, indeed Fascism was an offshoot of Socialism.
And, needless to say, Socialists hate Fascists above all else (or pretend to, at the very least), because no totalitarian ideology has ever been able to tolerate heresy.
