The knee-jerk reaction to Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett’s first term was that she was less conservative than some had hoped and others had feared.
But those judgments are likely to be premature, because the real tests for Barrett will come over the next year...
The 49-year-old Barrett, for example, was lampooned by Democrats as a threat to health care during her confirmation hearings last year, but then ruled against a challenge to the Affordable Care Act in this year’s term.
Barrett is likely to be a crucial and possibly a deciding vote on two huge cases on hot-button culture war issues: abortion and guns.
...
The abortion case is Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. At issue is a law passed by the Mississippi Legislature in 2018 that banned most abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy...If Barrett and Kavanaugh join with the three hardline conservative justices to completely reverse Roe when the court decides the Dobbs case in the spring or summer of 2022, it will indicate that Barrett is less concerned about her reputation and legacy, and about political backlash against the court, than some observers had thought.
...
Meanwhile, New York’s ban on carrying firearms outside the home without a reason that’s approved by the state and related to self-defense is under challenge in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Corlett. Other states with similar restrictions include California, Delaware, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey and Rhode Island.
In that case, it appears Kavanaugh is eager to rule against restrictions on gun ownership, given his comments in a prior case. So Barrett’s vote could be decisive.

Liberal Yahoo and friends always concerned...
The last good Justice appears to be Alito. Since then, disappointments.
Amy serves the butt hurt daddy Francis, not the US Constitution.
The real test was Texas v PA and she and fratboy failed the test miserably.
Looking at her record so far, I would say ACB is the UN-INVOLVED Justice. When push comes to shove and a very difficult, controversial case comes before her, she would rather NOT take it than be forced to make a decision that will anger people.
So far she is, at best, useless.
Barrett and Kavanaugh are intellectual no-shows so far.
Am not holding out any expectations that either will “grow into the job”.
Time will tell. I know Coney-Barrett is too liberal for many here. We just have to wait and see how these cases are decided.
That squares with my evaluation - both are duds.
They already came into the job as experienced appellate court judges with all the intellectual experience they needed. they clearly lack either conviction or the courage thereof. Either way they are proven duds.
I hope no one is holding their breath with the most recent SCOTUS appointments.
Well ... I hope she surprises me. But I won’t hold my breath.
They will. In the same way that Kennedy did.
How many Federal Appellate Court judges are there?
Easy to be one among many, knowing that even if your case goes further, it’s SCOTUS that will get all the publicity, either way.
Now that they’re 2 of 9, and they’re required to write majority or minority opinions, for all the world to see, it ain’t that easy, too much pressure, or they did a great job of hiding who they really are and are not being given the chance to show their true colors.
“That squares with my evaluation - both are duds.”
Why doesn’t the left ever get a dud?
Since Byron White, no dem president has ever appointed a justice who did not turn out to be a reliable, far-left-wing, impose-my-values, ignore-the-constitution fanatic.
Give it a couple of years and we will take the training wheels off of your chair?
We have already seen she will fold for any liberal cause without a peep of disapproval.
