Since the advent of AIDS, major advancements in treating HIV infection has turned what used to be a death sentence into a manageable chronic condition. But new research warns that many people living with HIV/AIDS still face a dramatically higher risk for suicide. The finding came from a review of 40 studies that involved a total of roughly 185,000 adults with HIV or AIDS (PLWHA -- People Living With HIV/AIDS) all over the world. In the end, the study team concluded that suicide risk is 100 times higher among such patients, compared with the population at large.

Moïse’s death and the lack of a functioning government also serves as a clear cut signal that the U.S. must play a greater role in Haiti’s future, starting right now. It’s clear that Haiti will need both immediate and longer-term guidance to move forward in a democratic way. This is a country that started out with weak institutions, and they’re now virtually non-existent. The U.S., as Haiti’s biggest donor, has no choice but to take the lead — with international partners and, importantly, Haiti’s own civil society — to stabilize Haiti. An international coalition could do immense good very quickly...

The U.S. Capitol Police will open a field office in Tampa and another in San Francisco. Six months after supporters of former President Donald Trump stormed the U.S. Capitol, the U.S. Capitol Police will open a field office in Tampa to investigate threats to members of Congress. In a news release Tuesday titled, “After the Attack: The Future of the U.S. Capitol Police,” the agency detailed changes since Jan. 6, including boosting recruiting, training and equipment for officers. The agency is also in the process of opening its first field offices. “The new USCP field offices will be in the...

Dong Jingwei’s supposed disappearance coaxes China’s troubled history littered with past cases of state secrets being spilled, espionage and defection into view, says Professor Bo Zhiyue. The Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) centennial anniversary celebrations may have made headlines last week. But amid the celebratory notes of how the country has arrived and how much the party has been pivotal to that narrative, observers reading the tea leaves to discern what big challenges lie ahead for the country may do well to look at certain, less well covered developments in the lead-up. For while Chinese President and CCP General Secretary Xi Jinping’s...

Albert Mohler: Professor Morson, you have made the argument that the knowledge of Russian literature is really incredibly important for even modern Americans in 2018. Why is that so, and why is it particularly so related to Russian literature? Gary Morson: Well, there are a number of reasons for this. Partly, they grow out of the facts of Russian history. Russian history tends to the extremes, and in the 20th century, that produced an entirely new form of society, to which we gave the name Totalitarian. That was the product of the thought and actions of a particular group of...

Scoundrel, liar, cheat and toady, George MacDonald Fraser’s Flashman is a creation of genius and a bracing antidote to our timid agehe brothers Hitchens famously did not agree on very much, but one matter that brought them into rare accord was the genius of the author George MacDonald Fraser and his character Flashman. Christopher wrote in 2008 that “I can remember the mingled shock and glee with which my radical friend Andrew Cockburn and I discovered … that we had both recently fallen for the same author and character. I have met that look, of the confirmed addict and fellow-sufferer,...

Throughout much of 2021, conservatives, in both classrooms and in the halls of state legislatures, have been fighting back against the pervasive influence of critical race theory in public schools. Laws banning the instruction of CRT tenets in public schools have passed in more than 20 states, and there is reason t0 hope that the tide is beginning to turn in the fight for the country’s history and principles. Unfortunately, the Zinn Education Project refuses to accept defeat, and desires to teach American children that this country was founded upon the “dispossession of Native Americans, slavery, structural racism and oppression,”...

Today we'll talk about how to write the classic New York Times column, using Thomas Edsall's recent "Trumpism Without Borders" as our example. It must have taken him about 40 minutes to write it. Edsall blames the populist movements sweeping the globe on the same ills that "led to a right-wing takeover of the federal government by Donald Trump." To wit: "anti-immigrant fervor, political tribalism, racism, ethnic tension, authoritarianism and inequality." Fascism awaits us unless we keep importing low-skilled immigrants and shipping jobs abroad! For someone worried about the erosion of "democratic norms," maybe Edsall shouldn't be referring to the...

Can people put their hand on another person's mouth and censor them? Can corporations like Twitter, FB, etc, operate like platforms and publishers simultaneously? Can they get the perks of a publisher (saying no to essentially a letter to the editor written for all to see, but in this case on Twitter, FB, etc, as newspapers can do this) while claiming they are a platform? If you have fallible humans that are biased against Trump, how can they be trusted to be "fact checkers"? Where can we find 100% impartial people? If pro-Biden people say a Tweet from Trump is...

Following explosive reports from Revolver News pertaining to the US government’s apparent infiltration of patriot groups ahead of the events at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, National File has obtained exclusive footage and photos of the assault on the doors of the Capitol building leading to the inaugural stage, depicting individuals who were potentially working with or for the FBI, local police, or federal law enforcement observing, instigating, and participating in the violence. National File attempted to research the identities of these individuals, or evidence that they are currently being pursued by the FBI for their actions on January...

The Democrat Party was, is, and will continue to be the agent of Black oppression. Democrats are now, simultaneously, the historical architects and political beneficiaries of the systemic racism they have institutionalized over the last century. It is Democrat policies that have kept generations of poor, mostly Black Americans ensnared and enslaved on urban poverty plantations — which they both seeded and institutionalized over the last century. Democrats would like you to believe that the old racist Democrats swapped parties, but there was no such switch. Again, as Rep. Dan Crenshaw noted, “Republicans have been and always will be the...

In this interview, Dr. Vladimir Zelenko discusses an incredibly serious concern, one shared with at least two other highly credible experts — Michael Yeadon, Ph.D., a life science researcher and former VP and chief scientist of allergy and respiratory research at Pfizer, and professor Luc Montagnier, a world-renowned virologist who won the Nobel prize discovery of HIV. Yeadon, Montagnier and Zelenko all believe the COVID-19 shots could reduce life expectancy by several decades, depending on several factors, including whether you’re required to get booster shots. In fact, there may be reason to suspect that many who get the jabs and...

A poll published Wednesday has shown that ties between Germany and the United States have improved with the election of US President Joe Biden. Former US President Donald Trump had pressured Germany over its failure to meet NATO’s defense spending obligations and Berlin’s insistence on buying Russian natural gas, among other issues. Both of those issues still irk the White House, but officials in Europe agree that US foreign policy has taken a less confrontational approach toward Europe since Biden took office. The YouGov survey of 2,000 respondents found that 66% believed relations had improved between Germany and the US,...

Right now, there is a clear path ahead for Liz Cheney, and it does not involve the state of Wyoming. She will deny this. And she may not even believe it now. And for the rest of this year, she will continue to represent us to the best of her ability in the U.S. House of Representatives. But I could see her traveling a different path, based on a number of steps that could very well happen. Three events have set the stage for this scenario. The first was when she voted to impeach President Donald Trump after the Jan....

ebanon, which is in the midst of a severe economic crisis, is “days away” from a social explosion, the country’s caretaker prime minister warned on Tuesday, moments before renewed, violent protests broke out as people desperately search for essential medicines, gasoline and food. “Lebanon is a few days away from the social explosion. The Lebanese are facing this dark fate alone,” caretaker Prime Minister Hassan Diab said in a speech during a meeting with international organizations and ambassadors. “I appeal through you to the kings, princes, presidents and leaders of brotherly and friendly countries, and I call upon the United...
