March 12 is the feast day of Pope Saint Gregory the Great on the traditional Catholic calendar. It also marks the date of his death in AD 604. One of the greatest Popes, Gregory reigned for 14 of the most tumultuous years in Church history, preoccupied as it was with the ongoing Lombard invasion of Italy. Wracked with a chronic illness, Gregory nonetheless managed Church and civil affairs with vigor and aplomb as prompted by the Holy Spirit. His reign is often considered the bridge between the ancient Papacy and the medieval Papacy in which the Pope played the role...

Axios is reporting that the number of bills Republicans have advanced in the first two months of 2021 at the state level to protect women and girls in the wake of the Biden administration’s radical transgender policies exceeded the total of such efforts in 2020. Of course, Axios frames these bills as anti-trans rather than pro-woman and pro-child. While President Biden, or those pulling his strings, felt like taking on this issue by executive proclamation, America is not wholly on board by any stretch of the imagination.A recent poll from Rasmussen found 54% of Americans oppose letting trans athletes compete...

Target announced on Thursday that the company is downsizing its Minneapolis office space by moving out of City Center, a move that decreases its downtown footprint by one-third. In an email to corporate employees, Target executives said its post-pandemic “Flex for Your Day” policy—a hybrid model that will allow both remote and on-site work—requires less office space, driving the decision to stop its lease of nearly one million square feet at City Center. The The 3,500 employees who worked at that location will be relocated to another Minneapolis location or Brooklyn Park. There are no lay-offs due to the move....

I constantly keep seeing a Disney commercial on TV that plays the song "Hi Ho Hi Ho , Its Off To Work We Go!" but without the lyrics. The families portrayed in the commercial are happy, masked, having a good time all while the "Off to work we go" song is being played. The non-working will be very offended.

House Resolution 40, the Commission to Study and Develop Reparation Proposals for African-Americans Act, got underway again in mid-February. It was originally introduced in Congress by John Conyers of Michigan in 1989, then again by Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee of Texas in 2019, followed by Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey, who presented a companion bill last April. Of particular contention is the claim that white Americans are responsible for the "sin of slavery" and should be made to pay, in order to adequately address and resolve 400 years of racial injustice and inequality, while contending that 5% of all...

A conversation on the academic performance of Black law students between two faculty members teaching at Georgetown following a Zoom session was recorded and posted online without their knowledge. As a result, one of them has been fired and tearfully apologized, while the other one is "on leave until the investigation by the Office of Diversity, Equity and Affirmative Action is complete" for failing to react in outrage over what the dean of the law school termed "reprehensible statements concerning the evaluation of Black students." Both professors are adjunct faculty, meaning they are professionals brought in teach students with their...

Five Oklahoma police officers will be charged with first-degree manslaughter in the killing of a 15-year-old burglary suspect who was shot more than a dozen times last November, authorities said Wednesday. Stavian Rodriguez was accused of trying to rob an Oklahoma City convenience store at gunpoint on Nov. 23 when several cops surrounded him in a caught-on-tape confrontation. Surveillance video obtained by local media appears to show the teen dropping a gun as officers repeatedly ordered him to get on the ground. He then raised his hands before lowering them again, a move that cost him his life. Seconds later,...

Watching Biden lie to us and hearing him insult us is annoying and, frankly, boring at this point – because we expect it. But in this speech Biden went far beyond annoying and straight onto a terrifying new path, the path of complete government control. He led into his plans with a bit of communistic propaganda by speaking to a “common purpose” our hands must turn to before informing us that he’s “using every power [he] has as POTUS to put us on a war footing.” Symbolism?Knowing that people expect that, since the number of positive China virus cases have...

Friday, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg addressed President Joe Biden’s next big focus after signing the $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief package, which appears to be passing an infrastructure bill. Buttigieg pointed out on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” that the gas tax has not been changed since 1993, meaning it has not been adjusted for inflation. He suggested it is a “medium-term solution” to pay for infrastructure

A concise history of the beer industry in Namibia written by history scholar Tycho Van der Hoog begins with the pithy observation by American singer-songwriter Frank Zappa to the effect that every nation worth its salt needs an airline and its own beer. As it happens, the first no longer holds true, while beer remains a marker of national and, for that matter, subnational identities. The brewing industry is today regarded as a source of national pride in Namibia. Windhoek Lager has not merely conquered the domestic market but has made substantial inroads south of the border where South African...

Novavax Inc's COVID-19 vaccine was 96% effective in preventing cases caused by the original version of the coronavirus in a late-stage trial conducted in the United Kingdom, the company said on Thursday, moving it a step closer to regulatory approval. The vaccine was also about 86% effective in protecting against the more contagious virus variant first discovered and now prevalent in the UK. It was only around 55% effective in a separate, smaller trial in South Africa, where volunteers were primarily exposed to another newer, more contagious variant that is widely circulating there and spreading around the world. In both...

"Good evening my fellow Americans. Tonight, I'd like to talk to you about where we are as we mark one year since everything stopped because of this pandemic." Stop the tape! Everything did not stop because of this pandemic. "A year ago, we were hit with a virus that was met with silence and spread unchecked, denials for days, weeks, then months."

Disclaimer: While the NAACP LDF shares the same moniker as NAACP it is an entirely separate entity, having separated from the organisation in 1957. As Republicans continue to pass bills that would restrict voting rights for many, and as the Democrats try to fight back on the federal level, Jonathan Freedland speaks to Janai Nelson of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund about the importance of the battle for minority voters across the country .....

Speaking to the nation in his first major address Thursday night, Joe Biden lectured Americans about what they will be "allowed to do" after they receive the Wuhan coronavirus vaccine. "I need you to get vaccinated when it's your turn or when you can find an opportunity and to help your family, your neighbors to get vaccinated as well," Biden said. "If we do our part. If we do this together, by July the 4th, there's a good chance you, your families and friends, will be able to get together in your backyard, or your neighborhood and have a cookout...

When I was in grad school, I had a term paper graded and returned to me. In it, was a phrase, circled in red, with an explanation and an exclamation mark. It read: “Double modal!” The offending phrase was “might could.” I looked at the phrase, which seemed perfectly acceptable to my ear, and puzzled over it. I consulted my wife, the English major. She politely explained to me that my very common Southern dialect expression was considered “bad grammar.” Interestingly, it is acceptable German grammar (and was once, undoubtedly, good English grammar, somewhere). One of the things that puzzled...
