Windows 10 Version 20H2 forced update
Self | Today | Self

Posted on 03/12/2021 7:05:33 AM PST by CatOwner

I had been delaying the update of Windows 10 to Version 20H2 since it first was released and showed up in Windows Update. I recall reading some comments about waiting out this update, but I don't remember why.

Given Windows 10 is barking about this update by claiming the currently installed update is nearing end of service soon, I guess I will bite the bullet and installed it. Are there any privacy issues I should be aware of? I performed a lot of tweaking a while back, including the disabling of Cortana (as much as can be done). I wonder if I will need to repeat those steps and/or if they've changed with 20H2.

Are you running Win10 Home or Pro version? Pro has the ability to disable the windows update service.

I would NEVER install anything from Microsoft until it had been in use for at least a month.

I got thoroughly sick of being an unpaid beta tester.

Same reason that I won’t take the Bill Gates vaccine (well, that and the fact that I’ve actually had COVID, and have a full suite of antibodies...)

How to stop automatic updates on any version of Windows-10:

Note: editing registry must be done with extra care.

From Start menu run Regedit as Administrator.
Navigate to the following path:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows

Right-click the Windows (folder) key, select New, and then click the Key option.

Name the new key WindowsUpdate and press Enter.
Right-click the newly created key, select New, and click the Key option.

Name the new key AU and press Enter.
Right-click on the right side, select New, and click the DWORD (32-bit) Value option.

Name the new key AUOptions and press Enter.
Double-click the newly created key and change its value (number only) to:

1 - Disable automatic updates
2 — Notify for download and auto install.
3 — Auto download and notify for install.
4 — Auto download and schedule the install.
5 — Allow local admin to choose settings.
These options work similar to the Group Policy settings, and number 2 is the best option
to disable Windows Update on Windows 10 permanently.

Click the OK button.
Restart your computer.
Once you complete the steps, Windows 10 will stop installing updates automatically.
However, you’ll receive notifications as soon as new quality updates are available,
but they won’t download until you trigger the install manually.

You can always use the same instructions to restore the original settings,
but on step No. 4, right-click the WindowsUpdate key, select the Delete option, and then
reboot the device to complete applying the settings.

Updates are essential, however sometimes it makes sense to delay automatic updates.
For example, when you want to delay the installation of a new cumulative update until
you’re sure it doesn’t contain any problems. You want to update your system manually
proactively, or you’re working with a device with critical software and equipment that may
stop working if new updates are applied.

Do what you’re told, puny user, it’s Microsoft’s OS, not yours. Read the TOS.

Win10 Pro. It’s not being forced on me, but if the current version I am using won’t be updated in the near future, might as well install 20H2. Just looking for any steps to mitigate the privacy issues as much as possible. Having Cortana disabled was a big one.

Any problems you have with Windows or Office will require the upgrade before you can get help, at least from MS and probably from software vendors who maintain certified Windows applications.

If you do not want to stay current with Windows, go to Linux.

>>How to stop automatic updates on any version of Windows-10:<<

How long before MS bypasses that fix?

I did the Cortana reg hack to shut her up — a few updates later she was back “helping” me.

H2 is safe. I have it on a fleet of about 30 computers and all of my home machines and laptop and haven’t run into any issues. Highly recommend you proceed with the install.

It's an extremely bad idea to disable auto updates; if you do so you leave your computer extremely vulnerable to some nasty malware floating around. M$ turns auto updates on for two reasons:

1. To a void bad press (might seem oxymoronic here). M$ has suffered for years from a bad reputation of being unsecure, so having machines update automatically has slowly changed that reputation.

2. Get everyone on the same version asap to allow for mass adoption of new features. Really just clever marketing here, but nothing malicious.

The "Feature Updates" have really been problematic and can be avoided for up to 1 year on Pro or higher versions of Windows. Feature updates are the 4 character patches such as 1803, 1809, 1903, 1909, 2004, 20H2, etc. If you went the cheap route and bought Home edition, you can't opt out. You can always purchase a higher edition license, but that will require a full reinstall of Windows. The feature updates have become much more stable from 2004 onward unless you have some strange non-brand name 3rd party hardware drivers installed. Poorly written hardware drivers are the #1 cause of problems after an update.

Bottom line is, don't disable auto updates if you use the internet. If your PC is never connected to a network, then by all means feel free to disable auto-updates.

Backup all your email and files and bookmarks. I have had issues twice with updates on 2 pc’s and I hardly use Windows 10 at home. One update caused me to reinstall Windows. I use Win7 on my desktop pc.

If you have a anti-virus and anti-spyware program you do not need to update Windows 10.

My Win 10 Pro attempted 20H2 over weeks, with rollbacks every time. MS finally resolved the problem. I'm running 20H2 just fine now. i7 quad core, 32 GB RAM, 4 TB disk.

I just upgraded my Docker Desktop to version 3.2.1 and upgraded the underlying WSL2 to support it. I can now run both Linux and Windows Docker containers successfully. That is necessary for my current work assignments. You may have to supervise the multiple reboots that getting 20H2 demands to get there.

There is a program called “win updates stop”. And it works. It allows you turn the updates on and off very quickly.

Nothing like having your hard drive churn massively every day for 25 minutes while windows installs a version update and then has to roll it back because the update failed.
