SYDNEY, Australia — Scott Morrison, Australia’s conservative prime minister, scored a surprise victory in federal elections on Saturday, propelled by a populist wave — the “quiet Australians,” he termed it — resembling the force that has upended politics in the United States, Britain and beyond. The win stunned Australian election analysts — polls had pointed to a loss for Mr. Morrison’s coalition for months. But in the end, the prime minister confounded expectations suggesting that the country was ready for a change in course after six years of tumultuous leadership under the conservative political coalition. “I have always believed in...

In middle school, it's hard to be different. It's even harder if a student identifies as LGBTQ. This week, a couple of teachers at Central Park School for Children in Durham, North Carolina, decided to enlist the help of some local drag queens to celebrate the unique differences between the school's students. Taylor Schmidt, an eighth-grade teacher at the school, and his colleague, Schara Brooks, saw the impact bullying and other negative behavior was having on students in their school who identify as LGBTQ. They said students were even leaving the school because of some of their experiences. In December,...

Facebook has restored conservative commentator Candace Owens’s account and said they “made a mistake.” In a Twitter post on May 17, Owens shared a screenshot which appeared to be a Facebook notice. “It looks like we made a mistake and removed something you posted on Facebook that didn’t go against our Community Standard. We want to apologize and let you know that we’ve restored your content and removed any blocks on your account related to this incorrect action,” read the statement. Owens didn’t buy the explanation and credited the restoration of her account to her having a “large enough platform...

SOMERVILLE — He sang like a canary — and that was before he was arrested. A Somerset County man has been sentenced to 27 years in prison after being convicted of killing an 18-year-old woman by shooting her in the back of the neck. Prosecutors said Tamar "T-Mac" Reaves, 20, of Franklin, was caught after posting a social media video of him singing a song that included lyrics that eerily tracked the course of events in the homicide. Investigators said Reaves followed Chamari Webb from a convenience store to her relative's home on Battle Place before 8 a.m. Aug. 9,...

Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg called for everything honoring Thomas Jefferson to be renamed. “Yeah, we’re doing that in Indiana. I think it’s the right thing to do,” Buttigieg, the mayor of South Bend, Indiana, said in a Friday radio interview with conservative host Hugh Hewitt. “There’s a lot, of course, to admire in his thinking and his philosophy,” Buttigieg said of the author of the Declaration of Independence and the nation’s third president. “But then again, if you plunge into his writings, especially the ‘Notes on the State of Virginia,’ you know that he knew slavery was wrong. And...

Manifold Grace By Philip Cottraux Webster’s dictionary defines manifold as “marked by diversity or variety: many: comprehending or uniting various features.” In 65 AD, the Great Fire of Rome destroyed much of the city. Many blamed Nero in the aftermath, but the truth is that it was more than likely an accident waiting to happen. The city had been a tinderbox; years of poor construction, overcrowding, and garbage-filled streets made for a ticking time bomb. Nevertheless, the emperor needed someone to blame fast. Christianity, a new, fast-growing religion that people viewed suspiciously due to its refusal to bow to the...

Click Here to sign your “THANK YOU!” Hurray! Alabama has banned nearly all abortions. And Gov. Kay Ivey stated: “Today, I signed into law the Alabama Human Life Protection Act. To the bill’s many supporters, this legislation stands as a powerful testament to Alabamians’ deeply held belief that every life is precious & that every life is a sacred gift from God.” Although the bill makes Alabama the safest place for innocent human life, the pro-abortion movement is going crazy with rage. In fact, Hollywood “stars” are enraged too. Backlash is fierce and frantic. Socialist Bernie Sanders called it an “utter...

"AND LO, I AM WITH YOU ALWAYS" Matthew 28:20 One morning I stood on the bluffs overlooking the coast at Camp Pendleton. I spied an amphibious naval vessel just off shore. As I stood watching, it came into full view, then disappeared as the early morning fog came and went. The ship was always there, but it was only visible part of the time. It spoke to me of the reality of God's presence. The truth is God is always there, but our changing moods affect our ability to see. It's good days and bad...

“So whatever we do now will decide not just what the next four years looks like, but what like but the next 40 years will look like,” Buttigieg told more than 500 people at the Wildwood Smokehouse & Saloon. “That’s why we’ve just not got to win an election, but win the era for our values.” Republicans have made claims on those values and Buttigieg is reclaiming them, said Sarah Prineas, who introduced him. Buttigieg “doesn’t pay a whole lot of attention to the giant, orange elephant in the room,” she said. “He is a uniter. He makes us feel...

…[A] team of scientists working with a Harvard graduate student is for the first time applying deep learning — a powerful new version of the machine learning form of AI — to forecast sudden disruptions that can halt fusion reactions and damage the doughnut-shaped tokamaks that house the reactions. Unlike traditional software, which carries out prescribed instructions, deep learning learns from its mistakes. Accomplishing this seeming magic are neural networks, layers of interconnected nodes — mathematical algorithms — that are “parameterized,” or weighted by the program to shape the desired output. For any given input the nodes seek to produce...

Whiteness has become “toxic” under Chancellor Richard Carranza’s regime, insiders charge. At least four top Department of Education executives who have been demoted or stripped of duties under Carranza’s sweeping reorganization are poised to sue the city, claiming he has created “an environment which is hostile toward whites,” a source told The Post. The women — all white, veteran administrators — contend they were pushed aside for less qualified persons of color. snip Under Carranza’s leadership, sources said, whites, in some cases, are being told they must give up power or lose responsibilities no matter how well they have performed....

The German invasion of Western Europe has been going for over a week now, and the Neutral and Allied countries are in disarray. The Netherlands, despite putting up fierce resistance on some occasions, faces overwhelming powers while Belgium, France and the British feel the pressure from an organised and armoured assault from the Ardennes. And still, the German tanks, soldiers and aircraft are not all the Allies have to fear, as many of their losses are caused by their own command.
