FULL TITLE: War of Will wins the Preakness Stakes in Triple Crown redemption against field that included horse that ran riderless after bucking jockey at the gate
War of Will has won the 144th running of the Preakness Stakes, in Triple Crown redemption after being impacted by an illegal maneuver by disqualified horse Maximum Security in the Kentucky Derby.
War of Will was the fourth favorite to win the race on Saturday at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, with 7-1 odds. Everfast finished second and Owendale came in third.
In a bizarre start to the race, Bodexpress, a 16-1 longshot, bucked his jockey out of the starting gate and continued riderless for the rest of the race. The horse was disqualified from the official results.
Neither Kentucky Derby winner Country House nor Maximum Security, who was disqualified after crossing the finish line first at Churchill Downs, ran in the Preakness.
War of Will's Preakness win was vindication for trainer Mark Casse and jockey Tyler Gaffalione, who was forced to check his horse as the field was turning for home in the Kentucky Derby, losing momentum and eventually finishing eighth, elevated to seventh place after the disqualification.
It is the first time in 23 years that the Preakness has been run without a winner of the Kentucky Derby.
Trainer Mark Casse got his first Triple Crown victory, with War of Will unfazed starting from the inside No. 1 post position for the second consecutive race.
War of Will endured a rough trip and was interfered with in the Kentucky Derby, which led to first-place finisher Maximum Security being disqualified.
Casse was just thankful War of Will didn't go down in the Derby, which could've been a multihorse catastrophe.

I was rooting for the jockeyless horse.
Does anybody know why Country House was not entered?

He developed a cough.
Thanks for posting. Fourth favorite 7-1 (he was right in my wheelhouse betting template...I would have made about 19-25 bucks)...I would have had him but didn’t stick around long enough at the local track today to bet the Preakness. Oh well...you win some...you lose more...and some you don’t stick around to bet.
That horse was a stud. He ran TWO laps around the racetrack. He also made sure he didn't finish in last place although technically he was DQ'd.
I hope you know that you don’t have to stick around to bet a later race.
It’s funny. They have reviewed the Derby and determined, after the fact, that Maximum Security should not have been disqualified. Or so the article I read the other day claimed.
Yeah I knew that, but I had gone through the $100 I took and thought I shouldn’t risk anymore. Thanks for the reminder deweyfrank. I rarely use that option but I certainly could have today. I did it in the Derby and lost my $90 on the disqualification. The long shot blew up my strategy. I had bet, left the track and was watching it at home. (I also like to get the latest odds as they’re approaching the gate.)
My opinion, he would not have done well. Without the interference ruling, he would not have done that well in the derby.
I hear that. $100 is about my limit too.
Bodexpress stole the show!
Thanks, FRiends
I assume the horse was disqualified, but I actually can't remember how the rules applied to that situation.
The same day, I bet $5 on a female jockey to win. Female jockeys were really rare in those days, and, adjusted for inflation, that would be a $25 bet in 2019.
She won, and paid off at 90-1, or $2,250 in 2019 dollars.
I was with my three closest college friends. I paid for dinner, wine, and every bar tab that night, tipped like a drunken sailor, and still had enough money left to do it all over again the next night.
Those are really pleasant memories when you start to get old.
Why don't you join some liberals and watch girls' lacrosse instead?
Jockeys routinely fall off horses and riderless horses routinely run almost as if they are still competing in their respective races. The liberals are doing all they can to propagandize against things they don't like; and these days they don't like Donald Trump and Thoroughbred Horse-racing.
I very much like both and they can KMA.

Yep, that's the story I'd use too.
Makes you wonder what sort of weird crap is going to happen at the Belmont.
Dude, calm down. I’m not a sports person. I just happened to be sitting on a sofa when my father flipped on the horse race and I saw that poor jockey get thrown while the horse did well all on his lonesome. I just thought it would’ve been amusing had the horse placed in the top three minus his jockey.
