GOP Leader Signals Possible Support for Bush Tax Cut Extensions Just for Lower Incomes The House Minority Leader this morning signaled that he would vote for a bill to extend those tax cuts to those who make less than $200,000 per person/$250,000 per couple, even if it does not include a provision extending those tax cuts to wealthier Americans. Rep. John Boehner, R-Ohio, said on CBS’s Face the Nation that "If the only option I have is to vote for some of those tax reductions, I'll vote for it. But I've been making the point now for months that we...

The NFL Sunday season started with controversy as what appeared to be a game-winning touchdown was taken away by a questionable NFL rule. The Detroit Lions were trailing the Bears 19-14 when quarterback Shaun Hill threw to the endzone where wide receiver Calvin Johnson jumped and caught what everyone thought was a touchdown pass. Only 24 seconds were left in the game and it appeared the Lions had a comeback win. Johnson came down with both feet in bounds and controlled the ball. When his hand with the ball touched the ground he released the ball to start his celebration....

he Obama White House posted a telling article on their website Friday, unmasking a devilish plan by the Republicans to shut down the government. Oh no! What will happen if our elected representatives and unelected pencil-pushers can no longer spend our money on such necessitates as sending imams as goodwill ambassadors to the Middle East, funding suicidal bank bailouts or economically ill-conceived automotive industry schemes like cash-for-clunkers? I worked on Capitol Hill during the last shutdown. Everyone got paid, often for not working. I worked. That is what conservatives do. Social Security checks were still mailed out on schedule. The...

There are boxes that US presidential hopefuls have to tick early. They have to start building a campaign team, albeit discreetly. They have to set up a fundraising machine. And they have to visit Iowa, the small but politically crucial state that traditionally kicks off a White House run. Sarah Palin has ticked the first two and on Friday will tick the third when she is the main speaker at a $100-a-seat Republican dinner in Des Moines, Iowa. The party's sole superstar has not yet said whether she will seek the nomination to take on Barack Obama in 2012. But...

Yesterday Maureen Dowd devoted an entire column to why her Republican sister is angry that she voted for Obama: "One of the independent voters Obama will be trying to charm over the next two years is my sister, Peggy, a formerly ardent Obamican (a Republican who changed spots to vote for Obama). Disillusioned with her beloved W. over Iraq and Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld and the disdain for bipartisanship, she gave her affections — and small cash infusions — to Barack Obama in 2008. Despite being a Washington native, Peggy believed that the dazzling young newcomer could change Washington....

There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of the band called the Italian band,A devout man, and one that feared God with all his house, which gave much alms to the people, and prayed to God alway. He saw in a vision evidently about the ninth hour of the day an angel of God coming in to him, and saying unto him, Cornelius. And when he looked on him, he was afraid, and said, What is it, Lord? And he said unto him, Thy prayers and thine alms are come up for a memorial before God.And now send...

McGill researchers pioneer anesthetics via videoconferencingVideoconferences may be known for putting people to sleep, but never like this. Dr. Thomas Hemmerling and his team of McGill's Department of Anesthesia achieved a world first on August 30, 2010, when they treated patients undergoing thyroid gland surgery in Italy remotely from Montreal. The approach is part of new technological advancements, known as 'Teleanesthesia', and it involves a team of engineers, researchers and anesthesiologists who will ultimately apply the drugs intravenously which are then controlled remotely through an automated system. This achievement is a product of an on-going scientific collaboration between Dr. Hemmerling's...

Here is a list of the 39 Democrat held seats that are the lowest hanging fruit. If the Republicans are to take back the House, the pathway to victory would probably run through these districts first. The amazing thing is that there are dozens of other relatively easy pickups beyond this list of 39. This list doesn't even include many of the Democrats that are occupying deep red districts. Some of them, like Boren in OK or Minnick in ID will be harder to knock off, but many of them are just behind those listed here. Ark-1 (open-Berry), Ark-2 (open-Snyder),...

Fears were growing last night that American troops could suffer revenge attacks after protesters burned the Koran. On a third day of riots in Afghanistan, Muslims said they would attack 'foreign bases' in their thousands in response to the desecration of their holy book. Hopes of calm were shattered on Saturday when the Koran was burned in the U.S. on the ninth anniversary of the September 11 attacks. Though Florida preacher Terry Jones had cancelled his plan to burn the Islamic holy book, a lone protester at the Ground Zero site set several pages on fire, while in Nashville, Tennessee,...

RANCHO CUCAMONGA - The Catholic Diocese of San Bernardino is defending its decision to hold an event in the city that rallied support around legislation that would aid undocumented young people. The gathering at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church aimed to raise awareness and promote advocacy for the DREAM Act, said John Andrews, spokesman for the Diocese of San Bernardino. The Development, Relief and Education of Alien Minors Act would help young illegal immigrants who are illegally in the United States enlist in the military, attend college or acquire citizenship. The youth would have to meet certain requirements, such as...

The Circus Comes to Ground Zero On his way to the ceremony commemorating the victims of the worst attack on American soil, volunteer firefighter Sean Noonan sensed something different on the streets surrounding Ground Zero. He’s come to the former site of the World Trade Center for the past nine years to hear the name of his friend, New York City fireman Paul A. Tegtmeier, read aloud among the rest of the 9/11 victims. Before the ceremony this year, someone in a McDonalds tried to hand him a pin in support of the so-called “Ground Zero mosque,” Noonan scoffed. Also...

I´m living in "Europe" and just wanted to know how many different "guns" the "standart" FReeper has shot in his/her life. And if the gap between "europe" and the USA on guns is really this big. For me: Glock-19, P80 (glock 17 just called different in the military), HK USP .45 CAL (thanks to the stupid two handguns only ban here :-( Steyr AUG. Steyr AUG A2 Commando (God i miss this "baby" best rifle i ever had in my hands). The m-16 ("traded" for my AUG in Kosovo on the shooting range when we met some US soldiers :-)...

Is the 3,000-mile oil change outdated? --- I STILL remember learning from my father how to carefully remove a dipstick to check the oil level in our cars. It was drilled into me — along with turning off the lights when you left a room and clearing the plates off the table after dinner — that oil needs to be changed every 3,000 miles or so. I’m not sure what I thought would happen if I didn’t, but I vaguely imagined an unlubricated engine grinding to a halt. Childhood habits are hard to undo, and that’s often good. To...
