My grandparents, I am told, greeted the arrival of the Second World War (70 years ago today) with a sense of relief. They feared for their children’s safety, they dreaded the expected bombings, and they had no romantic ideas about war – my grandmother’s brother was shell-shocked in the trenches (and his eldest son was to die in Hitler’s war). But they were relieved, because they knew that Britain could not run away forever. By that stage only the most deluded peaceniks, as well as Communists and Fascists, believed that Hitler reflected the legitimate grievances of the German people and...

A website often used by al Qaeda supporters said it would soon carry a "present" to Muslims from Osama bin Laden on the occasion of the holy month of Ramadan.

Was this what family members at MyGoodDeed.org envisioned for a 9/11 Day of Service? Did they hope President Barack Obama’s classless energy czar, a self-describe “communist” named Van Jones, would co-opt their efforts after his group held an anti-America “vigil” on September 12, 2001 and summarized their event this way? “That night, STORM and the other movement leaders expressed sadness and anger at the deaths of innocent working class people. We were angry, first and foremost, with the U.S. government, whose worldwide aggression had engendered such hate across the globe that working class people were not safe at home. We...

Someone once said of Madonna that she felt she would cease to exist unless a cameraman was following her around recording her every move. I’m beginning to get the same vibe from President Obama, like we’re watching someone who’s in the grip of a serious psychological addiction. How else to explain his bizarre decision to schedule not one but two big television events for his first week back on the job. This after barely a week out of the limelight – his vacation on Martha’s Vineyard, which ended prematurely after he insinuated himself into the Ted Kennedy memorial service, becoming...

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Nearly 9 in 10 Americans say the country's still in a recession, according to a new national poll. According to the poll, 52 percent support President Obama's economic plan, down from 65 percent in March. Fifty-five percent think the Cash for Clunkers program was a success, but less than 4 in 10 say Obama's economic program has improved the economic conditions so far. The Republicans still get more blame than Democrats for the country's economic problems, but that figure's down from 53 percent in May to 41 percent now. Twenty-seven percent say the Democrats are more responsible...

WASHINGTON -- Members of the 82nd Airborne Division headquarters serving in Afghanistan have been told their tours will be extended by 52 days from 12 months to nearly 14 months. Hundreds of officers and non-commissioned soldiers were told this weekend that they would have to stay longer so that their replacements in the 101st Airborne Division could have 12 months at home -- a sign at how stretched the forces remain. The members of the 82nd Airborne were supposed to return in May 2010, but will come home sometime in July, according to a senior defense official. Troops' families at...

The echoes rattle the cracked foundation of the colonial cobblestone, a streaking horse pierces the coarse evening air, and a lone rider, enveloped only by the fog of his own breath, but guided by an indelible love of liberty, shouts to the homes of his fellow patriots, “The socialists are coming! The socialists are coming!” Sound familiar? Well, it should! Perhaps no other calling is as critical as that which rings across this sacred land today. As Obama’s minions of socialism attempt to usher in a new era of big government, the so-called welfare of the people has become the...

Banks boosted borrowing from the Federal Reserve's emergency lending facility over the past week, but cut back on other programs intended to ease the financial crisis. The results offered a mixed picture of credit conditions.

(CNSNews.com) – The health care bill under consideration in the House of Representatives would give President Obama the authority to name a new federal “Health Choices Commissioner” who would have sweeping power to govern the health insurance plans offered in a so-called "exchange" where millions of Americans would get their health insurance if the bill is enacted. These powers would include deciding which treatments are covered, which companies can participate, which states can run their own exchange, and enrolling individuals into the public exchange.

Representative Dan Boren [D-OK] recently sat down for an interview with the Oklahoma Gazette's Will Holland, and had some harsh words for the leader of his own party. The following is an excerpt from that report: Boren has just come inside to this air-conditioned oasis after making a speech to commemorate the opening of a new Democratic headquarters in Durant, a community deep in the heart of Southeast Oklahoma. He braved the 100-degree, blast-furnace heat to speak to a gathering of local Democrats, many clad in boots and cowboy hats, because these supporters make up the base of the state's...

(CNN) – An outspoken critic of Mark Sanford is accusing the embattled South Carolina governor of orchestrating a smear campaign against Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer. Republican State Sen. Jake Knotts wrote to fellow members of the state legislature on Wednesday accusing Sanford and his allies of spreading rumors that Bauer is gay — a claim that was reported earlier this week by a blogger who seeks to out closeted conservative politicians. "As a former target of a false rumor started by the Sanford Camp I can tell you with absolute certainty this attack was orchestrated on behalf of Mark Sanford,...

Rising opposition to President Obama's healthcare proposals may be morphing into something broader and deeper: an anti-Obama movement that could jeopardize the president's political standing, damage the Democratic Party, and give the Republicans new life. The concerns about "Obamacare" have triggered angry protests and emotional shout-downs at Democratic legislators' town hall meetings this August. And whether or not these eruptions have been orchestrated by right-wing groups, as Obama strategists contend, opposition to his healthcare overhaul has struck a nerve. In fact, the healthcare furor has inflamed political passions and raised doubts that seem to be spreading to other areas, such...

This is my first vanity post ever but I though it worth mentioning. I live near New Orleans and my son attends a public school elementary. I received a letter today informing me that my son's school would be showing Obama's address to the nation's school children on September 8th. It gives a basic synopsis as to what it will contain as well as informing me that I may want to go to www.ed.gov to learn more about it. It also tells me that I can chose to have my child not participate by letting the principal know and that...

Check out the Tweet that MSNBC's David Shuster posted a little while ago. He apparently sees some kind of significant irony in the fact that the ObamaCare protester who had a finger bitten off by a supporter of Pres. Obama's plan was treated by Medicare. "that's right, it was medicare... a govt run program that represents all the protestor objects to... it was medicare that treated him." To which we would respond: so what?

Lindsay Lohan will not be titillating fans anytime soon -- the actress has again turned down an almost $1 million offer to pose nude for Playboy magazine. In the Persian Gulf, on the island of Bahrain, the U.S. Navy has a special division made up of bomb-sniffing dogs and the sailors who handle them. The Bahrain Military Working Dogs Division was featured in a Navy News spot highlighting the work involved in deploying these highly trained canines to sniff out narcotics and explosives coming through the Persian Gulf and into the war zones of Afghanistan and Iraq. (See a Navy video of the dogs that can detect small amounts of explosives with a sense of smell "10 times greater" than their trainers'.) Developing trust between the dog...
