My grandparents, I am told, greeted the arrival of the Second World War (70 years ago today) with a sense of relief. They feared for their childrens safety, they dreaded the expected bombings, and they had no romantic ideas about war my grandmothers brother was shell-shocked in the trenches (and his eldest son was to die in Hitlers war). But they were relieved, because they knew that Britain could not run away forever.
By that stage only the most deluded peaceniks, as well as Communists and Fascists, believed that Hitler reflected the legitimate grievances of the German people and that these could be resolved peacefully; a few intellectuals in Bloomsbury compared Western democracy to Nazism, but the vast majority of British people believed in their country and way of life, and were prepared to fight for it.
Would that still happen today? Robin Shepherd, in the excellent A State Beyond The Pale: Europes Problem With Israel, writes a chapter called Europes broken back in which he explains that Europes pacificism is not, despite what it likes to believe, a symptom of maturity, but of tiredness, nihilism and suicide. Europeans no longer believe in Europe, they are not prepared to fight for it, and they are unwilling to believe that its enemies are willing to destroy it.
So had the Nazis not faced the golden generation but instead the bed-wetter generation, how would history have spanned out? He suggests:
It is, in all seriousness, difficult to escape the following conclusions: the editorial pages of liberal newspapers across the continent would portray the Nazi party as a grievance-based organisation radicalised by Western injustice; Nazi Germanys alleged anti-Semitism would be dismissed by BBC journalists as the rhetoric of the oppressed and would be censored out of reporting;

No
No.
The liberals only wanted to go to war with Germany after Hitler invaded their beloved USSR.
Without reading the article, I’m going to go out on a limb here and say ‘no.’
So long as Hitler provided healthcare (I mean, he had death panels of a sort as well—that’s healthcare right?), they’d be cool with him.
Liberals didn’t care then! Why do you think Chamberlain gave the Sudatenland to Hitler? “Peace in our time - Mr. Hitler has assured me.” Folks, this is the oldest BS in history: “Trust Me!” If you will only trust the evil in the world, you will have peace! I have a word to describe those who fail to learn from the lessons of history: fools. Sadly, we have fools and communists in charge at the moment, but stay tuned....11/10 is coming up!
No. They do not care about anything but being in power.
Hitler issued the declaration of war. That being said, today’s European Parliment would be hard pressed to declare war on fascism, given that all or almost all of the member countries are socialist and an argument can be made that some countries have employed some fascist policies.
It’s a funny thing to me. Roosevelt seemed to be against Hitler and Stalin yet his policies here opened the door for socialism/communism that we face here today.
Today’s dictators seem to all stick together - obama loves them all! -and hates we conservatives.
Declare war on themselves ?
How could they declare on a society and government that had such magnificent public works programs, government participation in the private sector, public health care and a fine youth program aimed at creating obedience to the state?
Hell, they wouldn’t declare war on them, they’d be after Hitler how to Americanize the whole Nazi process of indoctrination.
Liberals cannot even see the evil in Radical Islam occuring here in the present.
No. Only Christians and legitmate gun owners.
In a word, no. In 3, not a chance.
Ping
Liberals in the USA? Nope.
No more than REPUBLICANS would have in 1941, after Pearl Harbor. Let’s not forget that isolationism is NOT just a vice of the Left.
Let us also not forget that had it not been for a traitorous press publishing secret war plans - contingency plans *in case* of war with Germany (they omitted that as it didn’t fit the lede)- in order to damage the existing government regardless of the effect on National Security, the Nazis would not have been panicked into declaring war on the US, as they did on December 10th.
Many of today’s problems with isolationists who can’t see beyond the end of their nose, and a press careless of the national interest if they can push a partisan viewpoint, can be found back then too. I wish we could say we’ve learnt those lessons of history. Well, the GOP certainly has learnt, but the liberals, those who used to be against Dictatorships, they’re now in bed with them.
Liberals don’t have the guts to change termp levels during an interrogation [unless its Bush under the spotlight].
WHen did they ever? Europe is under the thumb of the EU now, the globalists, just like we are and just like Eastern Europe was. Overthrow the globalists, and let Germany start hating france hating england, and the fun will be back.
