Obama is trying the TV networks' patience with his prime-time demands

Someone once said of Madonna that she felt she would cease to exist unless a cameraman was following her around recording her every move. I’m beginning to get the same vibe from President Obama, like we’re watching someone who’s in the grip of a serious psychological addiction.

How else to explain his bizarre decision to schedule not one but two big television events for his first week back on the job. This after barely a week out of the limelight – his vacation on Martha’s Vineyard, which ended prematurely after he insinuated himself into the Ted Kennedy memorial service, becoming one of only three eulogists. (The other two were Ted Kennedy sons.)

Despite increasing evidence that Obama does not necessarily help his causes or his approval ratings by giving speeches, the president is now scheduled to address the nation’s schoolchildren on Tuesday and then give a pomp and ceremony filled State of the Nation-style speech to congress the next night during prime time. The beleaguered TV networks who are being asked to interrupt their regularly scheduled, revenue-producing air time again are already balking. Back in January, OK, that was the inauguration hoopla; then a big, serious prime-time address a month later, OK, maybe that’s appropriate for a country in deep recession.

But Obama will have asked them to suspend programming five times in the eight months he’s been in office. President George W Bush addressed the nation during prime time four times in his entire eight years. And it’s not like the speechifying is actually achieving anything. The president spent July and August frantically crisscrossing the country to speak to Town Hall crowds about health reform, only to see his approval ratings and the support for his health care bills steadily decline.

The president spent July and August frantically crisscrossing the country to speak to Potemkin Town Hall crowds about health reform, only to see his approval ratings and the support for his health care bills steadily decline.

Obama never spoke to anything other than a hand picked audience, so they weren't really town halls.

One of the very few things that makes paying for cable worth the expense. That and Dexter. :)

We used to watch Dexter, but had to give it up, too gory for our taste.

The country is fed up with the Fuhrer, his Administration or Gestapo, and the US Congress. Everyone I talk to will not vote for an incumbent in 2010 or 2012. RATs and RINOs are TOAST.

Agree! Remotes are a wondrous invention. I use mine every time he opens his mouth.

I HOPE he continues to wear out his welcome.

The Messiah is trying to live up to his role model Hugo Chavez, who has about a three hour tv show every week. They seem to believe that monopolizing the air waves will insure dominance in public opinion. Worked for Castro-- back in the '60's. When there was no competing medium. It won't work now, but rather backfire as we are seeing--Obama fatigue builds quickly in the absence of an honest message--and Obama cannot speak honestly if he wishes to survive.

He’s angering my son and family because some of the programs they like to watch are when 0bama decides to put his ugly mug and his hypnotic sssssvoice on the tv screen. Fortunately they have cable.

I’ve never had such loathing for any person in my life as I do towards 0bama and his administration.

I try to watch just so I have a better knowledge of how to fight him, but he is just too painful of speaker to listen to. Where did the claim that he was a great speaker start? He had a couple half way decent set piece speeches like in the 2004 (?) 'Rat convention where he could polish and practice it for weeks, but he has never been even a very good speaker.

Fox News postpones Red Eye when the 0 wastes valuable air-time. I vote more Red Eye, less 0.

I’m really dreading the arrival of the four-stories-tall portraits of Zero that are going to be required to be placed in every town square in the country...

When they start ringing the bell, or having the “call to bow down to Dear Leader” three times a day, I’ll really lose it....wonder how long it will be until it happens...

Maybe they’ll restrict the “call to bow down to Dear Leader” to children 12 years and under. Come to think of it, this is probably what they’ll use to replace the Pledge of Alligence.
