The Second World War — 70 Years Later Did any good come from such a monstrous bloodletting? By Victor Davis Hanson Seventy years ago this week, on Sept. 1, 1939, the Second World War broke out with the German invasion of Poland. Thousands of books have been written about the war. And by now revisionist historians of revisionist historians engage in an endless cycle of disagreement over why the war started, how it ended, and what it all meant. Here are a few more controversial thoughts on the horrific conflict that killed 60 million people, wrecked Europe, and set the...

Kane cheated. But don't expect him to be contrite. Local radio host Kane of 99.5 FM said on his show Wednesday that he was responsible for engineering and perpetuating a bogus story that national media covered widely last week. Repeating a stunt that had been successful in other radio markets, Kane deployed an intern to stand by the side of Leesburg Pike near Tysons Corner with a sign announcing infidelity: "I cheated. This is my punishment." Then the young man, who called himself William Taylor, gave Kane an exclusive interview about the whole affair. Kane (who refuses to disclose his...

Civil justice reform, which is sometimes referred to as “tort reform,” is not addressed in any health reform bill now being considered by Congress. As a matter of fact, civil justice reform is rarely being discussed even though it should be a critical component of every discussion and in every legitimate health reform bill. * * * Howard Dean, former chairman of the Democratic National Committee, at a town hall meeting in Virginia last week said, “Tort reform is not in the bill because the people who wrote it did not want to take on the trial lawyers. And, that...

OLYMPIA, Wash. (BP)--Voters in Washington state this November apparently will get to decide whether to keep or overturn the state's same-sex "everything but marriage" law, which grants homosexual couples all the legal benefits of marriage and which conservatives warn will lead to the legalization of full-fledged "gay marriage" in the state.

From PBS.org, July 20, 2009... "Communicating health reform goals" JIM LEHRER: As you know a lot of the commentary over the weekend was that nothing’s going to happen getting from here to the final hurdle here unless you really start cracking some heads, and really say, “Hey, this is the Obama plan, this is what I want. So much for what this committee wants and what that committee wants. Here’s what I want. I’m going to push and go.” Are you ready to do that? PRESIDENT OBAMA: You know, the interesting thing is we’ve actually been very clear on what...

The federal government needs to hire more than 270,000 workers for "mission-critical" jobs over the next three years, a surge prompted in part by the large number of baby-boomer federal workers reaching retirement age, according to the results of a government-wide survey being released Thursday. The numbers also reflect the Obama administration's intent to take on several enormous challenges, including the repair of the financial sector, fighting two wars, and addressing climate change. "It has to win the war for talent in order to win the multiple wars it's fighting for the American people," said Max Stier, president and chief...

The above is the official White House spill on this upcoming unprecedented presidential intrusion into the lives of this nation’s children. At first glance it seems innocent enough but there is some history with president Barry Soetoro and other people’s children. It seems that president Soetoro desires children to sing his praises and laud his influence. The following is how the world would be if Barry is allowed to get into the heads of America’s children. (see 4:24min video) Children singing his praises it not the only thing Barry wants, no Barry wants your children’s complete devotion and commitment. Why...

The London Monster The Saturday Strangeness Neil Arnold on August 22, 2009 3:00 PM 29. Phantom Assailants: Part One One hundred years previous to Jack The Ripper’s reign of ghastly terror, London was overshadowed by another spectral attacker – a phantom aggressor that, although seemingly dreadful and unique, would simply become one of many urban legends pertaining to mysterious and elusive assailants across the world, with many actually analysing the peculiar cases of ripping, and asking ‘did such psychopaths exist or were they the product of local hysteria’? Between 1788 and 1790, an evil jester of an attacker prowled the...

With housing prices down 30+% on average over the last few years, is Uncle Sam blowing fresh air into the housing balloon and actually creating another housing bubble? I believe that’s exactly what is happening. If you are scratching your head and think I am off base with my assertion, please navigate this path along our economic landscape with me. What drove the housing bubble? Cheap rates and undisciplined lending from the private sector. What added to the bubble? The internal ‘hedge fund’ portfolios of Freddie Mac (NYSE:FRE) and Fannie Mae (NYSE:FNM). What is perpetuating the housing bubble if not...

In Northampton County Prison on Wednesday, some inmates broke out in song. Wearing the tan jumpsuits of prisoners, the group harmonized as they crooned ''Lean on Me'' before 64 inmates, prison guards and officials and four judges. The group sang to celebrate 17 inmates, graduates of a new therapeutic community program that authorities hope to expand to a 300-bed treatment and work-release center proposed for Bethlehem Township. While some township residents continue to fight the ''prison'' proposal and the safety issues it could pose for the community, inmates back at the Easton prison have spent the last year in Tower...

I'm trying to think of the best metaphor to describe this. In my head, I see a car stuck in the mud. The wheels are spinning but the car goes nowhere. In any case, here's the latest rumor coming out of D.C. Senate Democrats are revisiting proposals to raise taxes on high-income people to help pay for an overhaul of the health-care system. The main proposal getting renewed attention is one by President Barack Obama that would limit the federal tax deductions for higher-income families for mortgage interest and other widely claimed purposes, said two senior Senate Democratic aides.

The Chinese government has agreed to purchase up to $50 billion worth of International Monetary Fund bonds, according to the IMF. These are the first bonds ever issued by the IMF. The big news here is that the bonds will be paid for by the Chinese with dollars but the bonds will be denominated in Special Drawing Rights (SDRs), not dollars. Based on the current conversion price between dollar and SDRs, the Chinese will end up with 32 billion worth of SDR denominated bonds It's another move away from the dollar as a reserve currency, though a move the U.S....

HAVANA -- At an age when most kids play stickball or videogames, Lazarito Castro focuses much of his energy on promoting Cuba’s socialist system, one speech at a time. The studious 14-year-old is not related to President Fidel Castro, but he is one of the comandante’s most passionate young disciples, a member of the Union of Young Communists who is known across Cuba for his fiery, fist-shaking speeches at massive government-organized rallies. Lazarito dreams of becoming a nuclear physicist when he grows up. But for now he sees himself as a soldier on the front lines of the “Battle of...
