Federal Government Needs Massive Hiring Binge, Study Finds (Needs 270,000 more workers)
Washington Post ^ | 9/3/2009 | Steve Vogel

The federal government needs to hire more than 270,000 workers for "mission-critical" jobs over the next three years, a surge prompted in part by the large number of baby-boomer federal workers reaching retirement age, according to the results of a government-wide survey being released Thursday.

The numbers also reflect the Obama administration's intent to take on several enormous challenges, including the repair of the financial sector, fighting two wars, and addressing climate change.

"It has to win the war for talent in order to win the multiple wars it's fighting for the American people," said Max Stier, president and chief executive of the Partnership for Public Service, the think tank that conducted the survey of 35 federal agencies, representing nearly 99 percent of the federal workforce.

Despite its comprehensive scope, the survey is necessarily imprecise about certain questions in looking so far into the future. The number of hires would be affected, for example, by federal workers deciding to delay their retirement, the government continuing to rely on private contractors to handle some of these jobs, and Congress balking at the price tag of adding new workers to the federal payroll.

Nevertheless, the survey makes clear that the majority of new hires will be needed in five broad fields -- medical, security, law enforcement, legal and administrative.

Mission-critical jobs are those positions identified by the agencies as being essential for carrying out their services. The study estimates that the federal government will need to hire nearly 600,000 people for all positions over President Obama's four years -- increasing the current workforce by nearly one-third.

The medical and public health area is most in need of hires, according to the study.

Shock and disbelief, Obama wants MORE Americans to subsist on the whims of Big Brother government and fatten the rolls of AFSCME and SEIU. Just shocking.

If “mission critical” is defined as responsibilities spelled out in the U.S. Constitution, then we need much more attrition....

No secret here: the DoD has been aware of this for at least a decade.

The Ministry of Plenty and the Ministry of Peace need more employees, but the real growth under Big Bro will be the Ministry of Truth and especially the Ministry of Love.

Didn’t Bam say he needed a whole lot more workers to do end-of-life counseling for Seniors just a couple of weeks ago?

I think you need to evaluate your definition of 'conservative'.

Sure, there are lots of feds in favor of spending more on defense, building more facilities for defense, etc. (In fact, they believe that private industry really needs to be totally controlled by the public elite.)
And, sure, the FBI and such believe that more assets are needed to 'maintain the law' (order)...

But their brand of conservatism might be closer to monarchy than you like because they also believe that only they and theirs are the proper enforcers.

Norton,

I’m one of those DoD conservatives.

When I hired on, I took the same oath to support and defend the Constitution everyone else did and I take it seriously.

In my 20+ years I have seen waste like you can’t believe. There was a time when if a buyer screwed up an order it was cheaper to throw what you got away and start over rather than reject it and send it back. It’s not quite that bad now, but not much better.

They are so worried that some contractor may give me a $5 coffee cup with their logo (that I’ll throw in the trash can anyway) that they have to fill out mountains of paperwork to make sure that doesn’t happen.

I can write volumes on waste, but it’s rarely fraud or abuse. Our hands are tied by the rules written in Congress to keep that coffee cup out of my greedy little hands.

We really do try to save money. We try to make do with what we have. But you wouldn’t believe the horse sh*t we have to go through if you’re not there.

Actually the federal goobermint needs to eliminate 50,000 of the 150,000 departments, bureaus, agencies, and spending programs. If they did so, 85% of the US would never notice they were gone.

In other words, add to the Fed Gubmint payrolls, well, just about every bureaucratic position possible. And these 600,000 will contribute how much to actual productive GDP output of our nation??? ZERO... just like our usurper-in-chief. We need to CUT gubmint spending by 50% or $2 TRILLION dollars, and not add one more gubmint parasite to the system. We need to rise up and overthrow this current 0bozo dictatorship and retake our country back!!!
