York County didn't qualify to receive low-interest loans to help residents and businesses impacted by severe weather earlier this month. The announcement came after a federal survey team from the U.S. Small Business Administration visited the county this week to assess damage caused by tornadoes and severe storms on Aug. 7. The SBA didn't say why York County didn't qualify for assistance. The National Weather Service confirmed two tornadoes touched down – one in Manheim Township and the other in East Hopewell Township. Thousands of people were without power for up to a week. Some families said it will take...

Charles Franklin “Peepaw” Beaverson passed away on Nov. 2, Election Day, at the age of 74. He had worked at Campbell Chain/Apex Tools for 45 years until his retirement. He belonged to the Kreutz Creek VFW and enjoyed attending the monthly cruise nights held by the Motor Menders Rod and Custom Car Club at the Markets at Shrewsbury. He had two daughters, two grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.At the end of his obituary, after his family suggests memorial contributions to Great Rewards Ministries in Red Lion, was this: “#Letsgobrandon.”To those who haven’t been paying attention — or as one veteran Republican...

.........I saw a catch in last Friday's (September 21st) announcement from York County Commissioners Lori Mitrick and Doug Kilgore about their backing out of eminent domain at Lauxmont Farms. The truth is that there are many catches. The legality of their action is in doubt and the Kohr family is challenging in court. They may insist the county take 187 acres of the 411 acres they sought and or compensate them in some way for keeping their land off the market for several years. In fact a judge may give Mitrick and Kilgore exactly what they want by ruling their...

......Incumbent county commissioners Lori Mitrick and Doug Kilgore have been fighting nearly four years to establish a park in Lower Windsor Township. On Tuesday, it appeared that they paid for that campaign with their jobs. The unofficial vote totals showed incumbent commissioner and park opponent Steve Chronister leading with 13,533 votes, followed by a former commissioner, Chris Reilly, with 11,350, for the two slots available. Mitrick ws in third among the Republicans with 10,915 votes..... Kilgore, the sole Democratic commissioner, trailed his two Democratic opponents, with 7,746 votes. Lori Mitrick is the wife of a doctor and a practicing Catholic. Back in the 1980's her involvement in a crisis pregnancy service of her church was known in the community. She was the kind of person you might consider to be a candidate in an election. But what launched her political career was not the pro-life issue, but opposition to a shopping mall near her wooded and seculuded neighborhood in the suburbs of York, Pennsylvania. Around 20 years ago the York Galleria Mall was constructed amid her persistent and vocal opposition to the plan. Her leadership in opposing the...

Shorten your showers by a minute, switch to energy efficient light bulbs and keep your tires inflated properly, and you can help slow global warming. Those were just some of the tips that Lance Simmens, an activist for Tennessee-based nonprofit The Climate Project suggested to a crowd of about 60 people at the West York Area Middle School last night for a global warming seminar......... The seminar was co-hosted by State Reps. Eugene Depasquale D-West Manchester Township and Beverly Mackereth R-Spring Grove, in an effort to educate residents about climate change and let them make up their own minds about...

.....MITRICK SENDS OUT MAILING TO VOTERS, GOP BACKS UP CANDIDATES NIGHT........ Some unusual developments in the GOP contest for county commissioner last week with President Commissioner Lori Mitrick putting out a loud announcement at last Wednesday's commissioners meeting.... A mailing is also out from Mitrick's campaign, reportedly saying taxes really haven't gone up that much in the last seven years. Mitrick has only been a commissioner for a little more than three years in which many property taxpayers have experienced a 50 percent or more increase in the amount of money they pay in county property tax........ SEVEN CANDIDATES MEANS...

  • Who Is Mark Platts Trying To Kid?

    York Daily Record/Sunday News ^ | 8/4/06 | Steve Chronister/York County Commissioner
Last week my family and I vacationed in Myrtle Beach. Each day I read the York newspapers online. Once again I read an opinion of Mark Platts about the current eminent domain case. His recent remarks criticizing me, a Lower Windsor Township supervisor and the people of York County who oppose this project displays a true sense of desperation. His attempt to misrepresent the recent poll, where 74 percent of the respondents do not want the county to use eminent domain to take the family home, land and business is wrong. The president of the Lancaster-York Heritage Region, Mark Platts,...

News and Notes from York County, PA July 31-August 6......... No Explanation For Firing For Dover Superintendent....... When the school board made a decision in June that his contract wasn't being renewed, Dover school superintendent Dr. Richard Nielsen was told he would receive a written evalutation. Nielsen says he is still waiting for that evaluation, which he plans to make public. The new anti-intelligent design school board dominated by the "Dover CARES" group said it could not comment on personnel actions when it decided not to renew Nielsen's contract when it expires next year. But members of the audience at...
