Who Is Mark Platts Trying To Kid?
York Daily Record/Sunday News ^ | 8/4/06 | Steve Chronister/York County Commissioner

Last week my family and I vacationed in Myrtle Beach. Each day I read the York newspapers online. Once again I read an opinion of Mark Platts about the current eminent domain case.

His recent remarks criticizing me, a Lower Windsor Township supervisor and the people of York County who oppose this project displays a true sense of desperation. His attempt to misrepresent the recent poll, where 74 percent of the respondents do not want the county to use eminent domain to take the family home, land and business is wrong.

The president of the Lancaster-York Heritage Region, Mark Platts, continues to say that no taxpayer money is being used to obtain this property and construct a park. Who is he trying to kid? Grant money, federal dollars, bond proceeds, landfill fees and other sources of money are all taxpayer funds. Believe me, it's not all free money. In fact, in most instances, it is borrowed funds eventually repaid by our children and grandchildren.

Another area of constant discussion by supporters of the project is the bankruptcy of the late Ronald and Linda Kohr. Everyone should know the legal system is being followed. The Kohr children have a plan approved by the bankruptcy court to repay all of the debt, plus interest. However, the resolution of the case has been stopped because of the county action. Isn't it ironic that the people complaining about the outstanding debt are ones blocking the settlement?

Some of the most important issues confronting York County are real estate taxes, health and human services cost, senior care, security and farmland preservation. In my opinion, it does not include spending millions of dollars on taking someone's land and creating another park. My vision of good government is to eliminate the misappropriation of taxpayer dollars. Maybe then, and only then, can the federal, state and local governments give the taxpayer a break.

This eminent domain seizure of afamily owned farm to make it into a park is very controversial in my area.

Local government officials and one of three county commissioners, Republican Steve Chronister are resisting.

But two commissioners, one a Democrat and the other a RINO are pushing the eminent domain seizure.

Most importantly, the brother of the head of this group trying to build the park is Republican Congressman Todd Platts (19th District-PA). Big liberal campaign contributors are on the board of the Lancaster-York Heritage Region trying to grab the land and build the park.
