Sony’s controversial comedy flick earned $31 million in online sales and $5 million in theaters despite cyber threats and a wide theatrical release. The online sales figure marks the most lucrative digital release for a Hollywood film ever. Sony Pictures' "The Interview" has made more than $31 million from its online and on-demand release, according to the studio. Sony announced digital figures Tuesday for the film spanning its first 11 days of release since debuting Dec. 24. Sony had previously said the film made $15 million in its first four days online, so demand for the Seth Rogen comedy has...

Sony Pictures is triumphant today because their release of the North Korea-inspired comedy The Interview by Seth Rogen and James Franco had an estimated sales of $15 million over the weekend from largely online sales. The movie was schedule to be released in about 3,000 theaters, but because of “terror” threats, it was released in a limited number of theaters and online. The revenue is about $5,000 per canceled theater, or about 300 people per theatre. Kind of light traffic for a new release with a great deal of publicity surrounding it. Count it another triumph however for a renegade state...

Kim Jong Un apparently isn't the only person who's not a big fan of The Interview at the moment.  Ohio resident Jason Best has demanded a refund from a movie theater after spending $650 on tickets for the controversial Seth Rogen film.According to WCPO, Best purchased 50 tickets for the film's screenings at Esquire Theatre in Clifton, Ohio. He hoped to resell the tickets online and take advantage of the fact that it was the only area theater showing the film, following Sony having pulled a wide release in response to threats from hackers.

Your humble correspondent just saw "The Interview" and I have to tell you that the critics are WRONG! It is absolutely HILARIOUS!!! Hardly a minute goes by in this movie when I am not laughing. And a lot of that laughter was uncontrollable bellylaughs! But...but what about the near unanimous "opinion" of the critics that the movie stinks? Well, the reason so many of them said they hated the movie is that they are afraid to admit the TRUTH that they also laughed like hell while watching it. So why would they not want to publicly admit it? Because...
  • New Study May Add to Skepticism Among Security Experts That North Korea Was Behind Sony Hack

New York Times ^ | 12/26/2014 | By NICOLE PERLROTH
A number of private security researchers are increasingly voicing doubts that the hack of Sony‘s computer systems was the work of North Korea. President Obama and the F.B.I. last week accused North Korea of targeting Sony and pledged a “proportional response” just hours before North Korea’s Internet went dark without explanation. But security researchers remain skeptical, with some even likening the government’s claims to those of the Bush administration in the build-up to the Iraq war. Fueling their suspicions is the fact that the government based its findings, in large part, on evidence that it will not release, citing the...

More and more North Koreans are becoming aware of the North Korea-mocking movie “The Interview,” and the government is doing everything to block it from getting smuggled in to the country. According to Free North Korea Radio, an online radio network made by North Korean defectors, demand for “The Interview” has been shooting up among North Koreans. It says people are willing to pay almost $50 a copy of the movie, which is 10X higher than what a regular South Korean TV show’s DVD would cost in the black market. In response, North Korea’s State Security Department and The Ministry...

Provoking unstable Kim EDITOR: Of all the remarks about North Korea’s reaction to “The Interview,” I’ve heard none about how provocative, goading, taunting, death-threatening this film must be to an unstable, possibly crazed leader of an enemy country. In our elementary and high schools, this is called bullying and we know too well the tragic consequences. When we throw our kingly weight around other countries, flaunting our free speech, daring them to respond negatively, then get righteously punishing, I don’t get it. JOAN PANARO Santa Rosa

Yes, bravo to Hollywood’s comedy about North Korea. After the epic furor of the past six months, including the early pre-release denunciation of the movie and threats voiced against it in June by North Korea’s ambassador to the United Nations, the hack attack in November on Sony Pictures Entertainment, the hackers’ threats in December against American movie-goers, the cancellation by Sony last week of the movie’s scheduled Christmas Day release, the scolding of Sony by President Obama in between his embrace of Cuba and his departure last Friday for a Hawaii vacation — OK, take a deep breath — Sony...

A bit of Hollywood history unfolded on Wednesday. And it might be a glimpse into the future. The controversial Sony Pictures comedy "The Interview" was released on YouTube, Google Play, the Microsoft Xbox video game console, and a special Web site. The movie, which started streaming online around 1 p.m. ET, costs $5.99 to rent and $14.99 to buy. So it is having historic simultaneous release in both living rooms and, come Christmas Day, about 300 independently-owned theaters across the United States.

Last Wednesday Sony began contacting a number of companies, including Google, to ask if we’d be able to make their movie, "The Interview," available online. We'd had a similar thought and were eager to help—though given everything that’s happened, the security implications were very much at the front of our minds. Of course it was tempting to hope that something else would happen to ensure this movie saw the light of day. But after discussing all the issues, Sony and Google agreed that we could not sit on the sidelines and allow a handful of people to determine the limits of...

The North Korea comedy film that had its Christmas Day launch cancelled after a major cyber attack and threats against US cinema-goers is now to get a limited theatrical release, Sony says. The Interview will be shown in some independent US cinemas on Thursday. Sony Chairman Michael Lynton said he was "excited" that the comedy, about a plot to assassinate North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, would now be seen. Two cinemas in Atlanta and Austin have already revealed screenings. They said via social media that Sony Pictures had authorised them to show the film, which has been at the centre...

Several movie theaters said they will begin showing “The Interview” Thursday, seemingly putting the comedy back in theaters after Sony Pictures Entertainment canceled its release. The Alamo Drafthouse in Texas said on Tuesday that Sony has authorized it to screen the film starting Christmas Day. Atlanta’s Plaza Theater also said it will show the film.

Good news. I wonder what changed their minds. The plan is to release the film simultaneously in participating theaters and via video on demand. The Plaza theater in Atlanta and a theater in Austin have now said they will distribute the film…A plan to distribute “The Interview” over Dish Network fell apart after talks between Sony and the satellite TV provider broke down over the weekend. The exact list of distributors was not immediately available, but the Art House Convergence, a national coalition of smaller, independent movie theaters, on Monday told Sony Pictures that its members are also willing and...

North Korea is so isolated that rather than bring the Internet to its hackers, it brings them to it—in a swank hotel in China. The luxury hotel that has been called a command post for North Korean hackers would make for a unique holiday getaway and give you lots to talk about back home. “Surprisingly Great Hotel - Clean, Tasteful.... and North Korean!” says a trip advisor review for the Chilbosan Hotel in Shenyang, China. For just $53, you get “a deluxe twin room,” including a North Korean breakfast considerably more substantial than those enjoyed by the vast majority of...
