The controversial film "The Interview" opened at a smattering of independent theaters at midnight last night, with most venues selling out the screening. Many patrons said they might not ordinarily have gone to see the film, but went in order to show their support for free speech.

Was this all a publicity stunt? Have we been had?
You’re certainly not the only one to say that. Sony sure grew a spine remarkably quickly.
It definitely feels like it. A week ago Sony was worried about the hackers releasing 16,000 more stolen (and embarrassing) emails. That concern seems to have vanished somehow.... either Sony paid off the hackers, or there were no hackers to begin with.
It was a scam to not only boost ticket sales but to draw attention away from The One as he continues with his emptying out of Gitmo.
North Korea could make a pretty interesting movie about the fake American in the WH.
A documentary about how a mysterious communist foreigner with multiple SS numbers and ties to jihadi terrorists came out of nowhere to be elected POTUS.
Twice.
I always wondered, not so much about the Norks, but maybe what Comrade Putin or the Mossad knows on the dubious history of Caliph Baraq?
There's no doubt in my mind Putin and his former KGB operatives have all the background information on Obama and are just waiting for the right moment to use it.
Let’s see - ruin $130,000,000 worth of movies by releasing them online, open yourself to a billion dollar lawsuit by releasing personal information about employees, all to promote an ATM movie that would have grossed 54,000,000 in theaters and broke even in DVD release.
And do it with a company which employee loyalty is sketchy at best, so you know that your fake hack will totally be exposed.
Unless you happen to know that Sony executives are suicidal, pretty sure that this wasn’t a publicity stunt. The major chains canceled the film when the other studios were worried about what the threats against The Interview might do to their film gross. When that happened, Sony didn’t have enough screens to meet the contract, they canceled the theatrical release. They could still do a limited release and VOD, so long as it was less than 300 screens, for which they’ll likely take a 30 million dollar loss on the overall life of the project.
No, this wasn’t a stunt by Sony, it was a multimillion dollar theft and vandalism by hackers, most likely from North Korea, and that should really bother people.
Do we know for certain the info released was genuine?
This could very well be a con on the level of Houdini or PT Barnum.
Bad movie....12-14 year olds would enjoy the dialog. Full of Fbombs and “She’s hot!”. Ugh.
Agree with most of your logic. Next question, how did people who saw it feel about the movie??
It was a hack
and it most likely wasn’t North Korea.
The gullible public has gotten punked again. It’s supposedly a mediocre movie, but will probably make Sony money now.
Same take here. I cannot advise anyone I know to see this filthy and obscenity laced piece of trash.
“I cannot advise anyone I know to see this filthy and obscenity laced piece of trash.”
I agree-—they really overreached with the “yuck” factor.
A really dumb movie-—and thank heaven I didn’t pay to see it.
