In the three weeks since Kamala Harris' devastating election defeat, the Democrats have tried to come to terms with a daunting reality: Donald Trump's support grew substantially nationwide. Even in the states that were called blue, the Republican saw a groundswell of popularity that carried him to a decisive victory in what polls suggested would be one of the closest races in history. Trump received more than 2.5 million votes than he did in 2020 and gained ground in all of the 50 states, while Harris saw a decline of seven million votes from President Joe Biden's total in his...

You know that racist flag? The one that supposedly honors history but actually spreads a pernicious myth? And is useful only to venal right-wing politicians who wish to exploit hatred by calling it heritage? It’s past time to pull it down.Oh, wait. You thought I was referring to the Confederate flag. Actually, I’m talking about the POW/MIA flag.I told the story in the first chapter of my 2014 book The Invisible Bridge: The Fall of Nixon and the Rise of Reagan: how Richard Nixon invented the cult of the “POW/MIA” in order to justify the carnage in Vietnam in a...

As their whip efforts narrow to a just handful of Members, House Democratic leaders are facing an unlikely problem vote: Rep. Loretta Sanchez (D-Calif.). Sanchez was nowhere to be found on Saturday — she was in Florida on a fundraising jaunt, two Democratic sources said — and while leaders expected her to return for the Sunday vote on final passage, they weren’t assured. What’s more, leaders now list the Orange County Democrat as a “no” vote.

MIKE Herbert was a nice guy who never minded doing a favour for a mate. On November 3, 1970, the 24-year-old pilot agreed to take his friend Dave's rostered flying shift in the RAAF Canberra bomber plane with the callsign Magpie 91. The reason? Dave had met a girl, an entertainer flown over to entertain the troops in Vietnam. Herbert and navigator Robert Carver instead took Magpie 91 up over Quang Nam province, a rugged and remote jungle region near the Laotian border. Poor weather was reported over the target, a Viet Cong bunker complex, when the bomber took off...

...There has been appropriate international outrage over the treatment of Gibbons, from virtually everyone except American “feminists.” Multiple Muslim groups in the U.K. have condemned the sentence. Even the popular little boy in Mrs. Gibbons’ class who suggested the name for the bear came to her defense, explaining that he named the bear after himself.

ATLANTIC CITY - The possible whereabouts of Atlantic City Mayor Bob Levy continue to make national news, including top billing Saturday on AOL's list of news stories, fueling additional media focus on his mysterious absence. Major news organizations such as Fox News and NPR also are planning coverage into next week. Levy vanished from public life Sept. 26, the day he signed seven ordinances and city officials said he transferred power to city Business Administrator Domenic Cappella. Officials, his family and his lawyer have refused to say where he is, claiming privacy regulations that experts say do not apply. Levy's...

Moshier, Jim E. Corporal Jim E. Moshier August 3, 1943 - June 11, 1967 After 40 years "missing in action", Marine Corporal Jim E. Moshier will finally rest near his father, brother, and the son he never met. At midday on June 11, 1967, Jim and 10 other Marines perished when their helicopter was shot down on a reconnaissance mission in Quang Tri Province in South Vietnam. Because of heavy enemy presence, immediate efforts to search and recover were not possible. Further recovery attempts, which resulted in 4 additional casualties, were also unsuccessful. Only recently have Jim's remains been positively...

The antics of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad are a reminder of how wonderful Rudy Giuliani was as mayor of New York. When PLO chief Yassar Arafat attended a United Nations session, Giuliani ordered police to keep him confined to diplomatic functions. After all, who wants a terrorist roaming the streets of New York?Chavez and Amadinejab were allowed to roam around, with the latter giving interviews to news organizations. It’s a shame interviewers didn’t ask him why his nation executes gays, and why it executes women who have been raped by older men. A followup question...

Barbara Novak remembers her big brother as an easygoing, good-humored guy who pushed her on a swing set and hoisted her on his shoulders when he came home on military leave. "He was like a lot of young men at the time -- he wanted to serve his country," said Novak, 64, who lives in Livermore. "He had a lot of pride, and we were all very proud of him." But on July 12, 1950, Pvt. Nicholas John Hansinger, a medic in the Korean War, was captured and marched to a prison camp in North Korea, where he apparently died...

Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour got a hug. Gov. Kathleen Blanco was lucky to get a hello. The friction between state and federal officials has been brewing for the past few days and bubbled to the surface with President Bush's visit to Baton Rouge on Monday. In fact, Blanco did not learn Bush was coming to Louisiana for the second time in three days until informed by an Advocate reporter late Sunday night. The news prompted Blanco to scrap her plans to visit Houston on Monday with former presidents Bill Clinton and George H.W. Bush, her spokeswoman, Denise Bottcher, said....

John Kerry abandoned our husbands, sons, fathers, and brothers in favor of trade and normalization of relations with Vietnam. His actions paved the way for the further abandonment of POWs and MIAs from World War II, the Korean War, and the Cold War. John Kerry, as chairman of the Senate Select Committee on POW/MIA Affairs, ordered the destruction of committee documents, blocked avenues of investigation, and misrepresented progress on the POW/MIA issue to justify lifting of the trade embargo against Vietnam.

Gephardt skips 85% of House votesBy Sam Dealey and Sarita ChoureyRep. Dick Gephardt (D-Mo.) has missed 162 votes in the House this year 85 percent of the total prompting Republicans to charge that he has abandoned his congressional duties in his pursuit of the presidency. The Republican National Committee (RNC) has seized on the absenteeism to point out that several of Gephardts missed votes have been on legislative and policy matters that are centerpieces to his campaign. In his closing statement at the South Carolina debate earlier this month, for example, Gephardt listed the creation of an Apollo II program to make...
