Remember the two ginger kittens that swam their way to a fishermen’s boat to be rescued? We’ve got updates on the two kitties. The two brave ginger kittens rescued by fishermen Jason Frost and Brandon Key are doing great at their forever home where they have been named Warrior and River. “Warrior and River are doing good they have been to the vet, have had all the shots they need and both have been fixed,” their human wrote. A three-year, $1.5 million effort to count the number of cats living in the nation’s capital launched Tuesday. The “DC Cat Count” census is being conducted a group of scientists and animal welfare organizations, the Washington Post reports. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) breeds 100 kittens per year so they can be fed toxoplasma-infected raw meat, and scientists can collect parasites from their feces to use in experiments. The kittens, only 3 months old, are then killed and incinerated. Keep in mind, after the USDA has collected the parasites, the kittens are healthy and could easily be adopted out to the public. But that’s not how the USDA works. This program has been receiving tax money since 1970 — currently $650,000 a year — and has been based in Maryland since 1982. It’s much closer to home...

A company is looking to hire someone to shower little kittens with love and snuggles. The Just Cats Veterinary Clinic & Cattery in Dublin, Ireland is looking for a cat cuddler. The job description reads: “The ideal candidate must have gentle hands capable of petting and stroking cats for long periods of time. They need to be softly spoke and capable of cat whispering to calm the nerves of some of our in patients. An ability to understand different types of purring is a distinct added advantage in helping you secure this position with us.”

Beneath "pounds" of matted fur laid a cat an animal defense league rescued last week. The Animal Rescue League and Wildlife Center in Pittsburgh shared Facebook photos of a cat brought into their clinic on Dec. 15 after its elderly owner moved into a nursing home. In the shocking photos taken before the medical team began shaving off "pounds" of fur, the cat laid beneath piles of "severe matting" or "dreadlocks." The rescue team estimated the cat had been "neglected for years."

Cats need between 12 and 16 hours of sleep per day, so with all that practice it's no great mystery why cats are experts in the sleep department. Toronto event producers Newmindspace, who threw a bubble-blowing party in San Francisco's Dolores Park in 2015, have been throwing lightsaber battles internationally for years, including one last December in San Francisco's Justin Herman Plaza. Everyone knows that sometimes the strangest animals can become friends, but this kitten is having none of it. When he meets the house lizards he doesn't even know what to do with them. So he overreacts. A lot. Thankfully the lizards just wait him out and eventually the cat gives himself a timeout off camera.
