I try not to. We have several barn cats and it took me years to catch all the females and have them spade.
Prior to that, it was not uncommon for them to eat their young or abandon them after about 3 weeks only for us to find them half dead in our haystack and then brought into the house to nurse back to life. Their now living rent free and enjoying the high life in my house. But they were all sweet babies
We just had a new female wander on to the property about 3 months ago. She was sweet and easy to catch but we could tell she had kittens somewhere because her teats were swollen, so we let her be. About 2 months went by and I opened the barn door and she was standing there and one her kittens ran right for me. So I scooped him up and put him on the cat food in the barn, and hour later she brought another kitten to me. So we brought them into the house and they have been there every since.

We made an appointment to get the momma cat spade, but after she dropped them off, she split for the last 2 months. Then about 2 weeks ago she showed, and she had her 3rd kitten from that same litter. There must be something in their genetics because he let me pick him right up and started purring. We put food outside for the strays, usually have 2 or 3 that show up off and on.
