Amazon MGM Studios is hoping to score a touchdown with a dramatic look at the sports and video game legend. After months, if not years of development, David O. Russell’s Madden looks to be nearing the end zone. Nicolas Cage is set to portray John Madden, the storied football coach and sports commentator, in a drama from Amazon MGM Studios to be directed by Russell, the filmmaker behind Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle. But this is not a biopic of the man in the typical way, nor a sports drama, a genre Russell took on with boxing movie The Fighter....

Legendary coach John Madden had a statue of himself unveiled today in front of Bruno's Market and Deli in Carmel-by-the-Sea. Organizers say it will serve as a lasting tribute to the iconic coach and broadcaster who would frequently visit the deli while he lived in Carmel. The project took nearly a year to complete.

Pat Summerall’s ad reads for ‘Murder, She Wrote’ always had the CBS crew in stitches.Legendary actor Angela Lansbury passed away on Tuesday at the age of 96, leaving behind an enormous legacy in film, television, and on-stage performances. Lansbury already had a brilliant career when she debuted as detective Jessica Fletcher in the hit series “Murder, She Wrote” at 60 years old. The detective show ran from 1984 to 1996 and was a huge part of Sunday night programming on CBS for more than a decade. That of course means we have a sports tie-in. Pat Summerall and John Madden...

One of the coolest things about John Madden is that he was an academic. It was a brief run, but still. In 1979, after Madden quit as head coach of the Oakland Raiders, he was hired by the University of California, Berkeley, to teach an extension course called “Man to Man Football.” Madden’s students had watched football on TV. Now, they wanted to understand how it worked. Professor Madden stood in front of a board that was like the Telestrator he later used on TV. Madden drew X’s and O’s and carefully studied his students’ faces. “I wanted to see...

history professor at Dallas College used the Tuesday morning death of John Madden to claim the NFL coach’s hugely popular video game “dehumanizes” black athletes. Andrew McGregor, whose research deals with “American culture, politics, race, and the history of sports,” wrote Madden’s football video game “was not a great development for the U.S.” as it “help[ed] to establish plantation cosplay” which has only “grown worse in the era of fantasy football.” Madden, who led the Oakland Raiders’ for ten seasons which included the Super Bowl XI title and a remarkable 103-32-7 overall record, “built a digital plantation” with his post-coaching...

John Madden: A Football Life examines Madden's storied football life and the legacy he has left on the game and its players. "He was a Hall of Fame football coach. He was a gigantic television star. It's the definition of a "sure thing." The next class of the Pro Football Hall of Fame will be announced Saturday, and former Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre is sure to be inducted. It's #4's first time on the Pro Football Hall of Fame ballot, but his stats and stature make him a shoo-in. "Nothing is ever a lock, but I am honored to be here," Favre told NFL Network. "I never dreamed of MVP, I never dreamed of the Hall of Fame, I dreamed of playing. And running out with my helmet off, like I did in the...

John Madden doesn't get enough credit. He's getting plenty of love, of course, on the occasion of his retirement from football broadcasting after 30 years, but the celebration of the 73-year-old's career still underestimates his influence. Fox Sports President Ed Goren describes Mr. Madden as "the No. 1 sports analyst on television," but that doesn't go far enough. Nor do his 16 Emmy Awards tell the entire story of his extraordinary impact. SNIP Mr. Madden is a transformational figure in the history of entertainment. He changed the way that we watch television and the way we think about sports. ....Using...

DETROIT (AP) -- Troy Aikman made it into the Pro Football Hall of Fame's biggest class in years. The guy he threw to _ Michael Irvin _ will have to wait once again. Reggie White, Warren Moon, Harry Carson, John Madden and Rayfield Wright also were elected Saturday. Not since 2001 had the maximum number of candidates been chosen. Emmitt Smith, who joined with Aikman and Irvin to win three Super Bowls for the Dallas Cowboys, had campaigned vigorously for his two former teammates. But Irvin, plagued by off-the-field troubles in recent years, was left out in his second try....

LOS ANGELES — ABC's first choice for the infamous "Monday Night Football" dropped towel episode wasn't Terrell Owens — it was announcer John Madden. For reasons that are unclear, Madden couldn't find the time to perform for the skit. Owens, the Philadelphia Eagles receiver, filled in for him in the steamy sketch that drew viewer protests and a network apology, said ABC entertainment president Stephen McPherson on Sunday.

Looks like John Kerry's critics have a fan at ABC - the sports division, anyway. Late in Thursday's nationally televised Patriots-Colts game in Foxboro, hosts Al Michaels and John Madden went political. After an odd series of plays, including a retracted pass interference call and a Colts fumble, Michaels said, ``What a wacky series.'' Madden replied: ``This is what you'd call a flip-flop.'' To which Michaels said, ``You're in the right state for that.'' Kerry's campaign wasn't pleased. ``Hey, didn't they know the Pats game was in FoxBORO, not FoxNEWS?'' asked Michael Meehan, a Kerry senior adviser.

I'm With John Madden: No More Commercial Flying For Me By Chuck Baldwin Food For Thought From The Chuck Wagon January 13, 2004 After retiring from coaching, former Oakland Raiders Head Coach and now popular sportscaster John Madden hung up his wings. He had been forced to spend numerous hours flying commercial airliners with his NFL team, but upon retiring he said, "No more flying for me." When first approached to take a position as a professional sportscaster, Madden said he would only consider the offer if he could travel to games via a bus. The networks agreed, and Madden...

IMHO, he's doing great, but there is just something weird about hearing John Madden other than on a Sunday afternoon. Strange, gonna take awhile to get used to. Am I the only one who feels that way? But it sure beats the last few years on MNF. No annotated babbling idiot tonight. Gonna miss Pat Summerall on Sundays, though. Nice halftime tribute to Terrell Davis, brought back great memories of watching Denver FINALLY win the big one after all those disappointments. One of the best Superbowls ever.
