Here is a video report on the news that John Madden has announced his decision to retire from his color commentary role on NBC National Football League broadcasts. Madden coached the Oakland Raiders to a Super Bowl victory following the 1976 season, and then went into broadcasting. He worked for many years with the legendary Pat Summerall on CBS NFL broadcasts, and then moved with Summerall to Fox to continue NFL broadcasts. Eventually he joined ABC's Monday Night Football with Al Michaels, and then moved with Michaels to NBC when they got the Sunday Night Football Broadcasts. Madden is famous for his fear of flying. He has traveled by customized bus to all the broadcasts he has done. Madden is 73. . . . . . (Watch Video)

I for one will miss him he is to football what Rush is to Conservatism
One of the most bizarre Madden broadcasts was the time the Packers was playing and he drew a circle (With the white highlighter he uses to describe a play) around Tootie Robbn’s, defensive lineman of the Packers, @ss and started talking about how big it was. But Madden is a very colorful person and he will be missed, THE best analyst in sport’s history IMO.
Agreed, he was the best. I’m really sorry to see him go- it means I’m getting old, too.
Speaking of conservatism, I wonder what this will mean for Al Michaels. Michaels and Madden were a package deal - Madden would've retired without Michaels moving to NBC.
JOHN MADDEN is and always will be FANTASTIC! A TRUE LEGEND!
Only 40 when He won the Superbowl! and Andy Reid will NEVER get it!
And Chris Collinsworth is his replacement.
I always liked Madden.. since, I’m old enough to remember him as a Coach. He’s ALWAYS BEEN, nothing but open, honest... and, knowledgeable.
I never minded his quirkiness until a few years ago, when I heard from a few people who just despised him. I had to admit, he’d gotten a little redundant... But, I still like him.
Howard Cosell.... John Madden... the two greatest “color commentators” of my lifetime...
I don’t see anyone out there right now that’s even close... I like Aikman pretty well.. Hate Sims.. I’m amused, at times, with Warren Sapp. But, none are in the same league as the icons. IMHO
I’ll miss Madden (especially if they replace him with Olbermann! That’ll be nightmare.) But I can understand why he’s retiring. He is after all the same age as Harry K who collapsed and died in the announcers booth.
These guys always start itching to do just one more...
‘pinky’ is done? say it ain’t so....
Sorry if you're a fan; I am definitely not.
I thought his football analysis was more performance art than informative. I wish they'd hire a guy like Mike Mayock.
John Madden is a class act. I wish him nothing but the best in his retirement.
thank GOD!
John didn’t “retire” he got an opportunity to do MNF (replacing Dennis Miller and Fouts) but ABC had made it clear they were sticking with Al for play-by-play and Pat “retired” to kind of let John out of their relationship and take the biggest gig in their profession. Pat came out of “retirement” to Dallas games almost immediately after ABC announced John accepted the MNF gig, and has done the occasional gig subbing at random intervals.
John was a great coach for my beloved Raiders. The man is a class act and a very caring person.
Hope he joins the Raiders front office.
