I used to see FR in Arial font. Using this laptop it's in Times New Roman. Very difficult to read and small font size does not help. Searched settings/preferences but no joy. Any guidance to offer? Thanks. Win10.

Goodbye, Calibri. It’s 2021 and it may not be the year for Times New Roman to make a comeback or Comic Sans to takeover, but the default font for Microsoft is definitely changing. Late on Wednesday, Microsoft announced that Calibri, which has been the default font for all things Microsoft since 2007, when it stepped in to replace Times New Roman across Microsoft Office is being removed. “It has served us all well, but we believe it’s time to evolve," wrote Microsoft on its blog. “To help us set a new direction, we’ve commissioned five original, custom fonts to eventually...

When Dan Rather filed suit against CBS 14 months ago -- claiming, among other things, that his former employer had commissioned a politically biased investigation into his work on a "60 Minutes" segment about President Bush's National Guard service -- the network predicted the quick and favorable dismissal of the case, which it derided as "old news." So far, Mr. Rather has spent more than $2 million of his own money on the suit. And according to documents filed recently in court, he may be getting something for his money. Using tools unavailable to him as a reporter — including...

Fourteen-year-old Suvir Mirchandani found a way to save the federal and state governments almost $400 million from their yearly budgets just by changing the typeface they use on handouts. The best choice? Garamond! Mirchandani’s school was looking for ways to save money, but he noticed no one was paying attention to the ink used on its many handouts. He noticed that Hewlett-Packard printer ink is $75 an ounce, while an equivalent amount of French perfume is only $38. Here is how he came to the conclusion that Garamond is the best choice: Collecting random samples of teachers' handouts, Suvir concentrated...

  • Twelve new Hailey "final reports" found! (P.S., also a call to action)

GLEESON EXCLUSIVE -- Must credit Gleeson The long-awaited "FINAL REPORT" on the forged Rathergate memos by the unflappable David E. Hailey of Utah State University is finally out. (Or is it? It says final report, but it also says "completed 3 December 2005," which is almost a year from now.) The report, titled "Toward Identifying the Font Families in the Bush Memos," is a 29-page exploration of the inner mental processes of a disturbed and frustrated fellow, trying any way he can to persuade whoever will listen that the fake memoranda were produced on a typewriter. (Any way except actually...

  • More Evidence Killian Memo's Were NOT Typed on IBM Selectric Composor

    09/13/2004 1:03:57 AM PDT · by The Bandit · 20 replies · 1,358+ views
To put a wooden stake in the heart of the vampire that is the IBM Selectric Composer typewriter theory, we've put-together a few graphics to illustrate one of the many reasons why this particular unit could not have produced any of the suspect CBS memos. On an IBM Selectric Composer typewriter, all characters - regardless of font or point size - have fixed "unit values" assigned to them. This means that, while the actual physical space taken-up by a character will change with font and point size, the relationships between characters within that given font and point size are always...

E-mail Number Three (of which I have only thetiniest bit of understanding, but which I suspect is even more bad news for Dan and the CBS crowd): "-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----Hash: SHA1 Hi, Hugh. My name is Paul Snively. I'm a software engineer and former Apple Computer employee. Specifically, I was employed by Apple Computer from 1989-1991, the years in which Apple invented TrueType font technology, shipped the first implementation of TrueType in Macintosh System Software 7.0, and licensed the TrueType technology to Microsoft. My personal involvement with TrueType, however, was limited to participating in a code review of the...

ELYRIA, Ohio (AP) -- For Brian Sooy, the way letters appear on a page is divine. So the self-described font fanatic and owner of a graphic design firm was happy to get the call from the publishers of New Living Translation Bible to create a font for the nation's third most popular Bible, which is expected to sell up to 1.5 million copies this year. The Bible printers, Tyndale House Publishers of Chicago, asked Sooy for help in 2002. They were looking for a new font that would make their Bible more compact and easier to read. A company art...
  • A Face Lift for The Times, Typographically, That Is (It's all about US!)

October 21, 2003 A Face Lift for The Times, Typographically, That IsBy THE NEW YORK TIMES tarting today, the front page and main news sections of The New York Times are receiving a gentle typographical face-lift. In place of a miscellany of headline typefaces that have accumulated in its columns over the last century, the newspaper is settling on a single family, Cheltenham, in roman and italic versions and various light and bold weights. A narrow variation will be used for The Times's signature one-column headline, which often appears at the top right of Page A1 on the main article...
