A father and daughter in Florida ended up taking an unexpected dip in the pool on Tuesday, after the man's wife reportedly failed to put the family car in park and it ended up rolling into the water. The Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office said in a Facebook post the woman thought she put the vehicle into park when she ran back into her apartment around 2 p.m. in the town of Crestview on Okaloosa Island, located on the state's panhandle. "New meaning to the term carpool - Mom thought she put the car in Park when she ran back in...

... Carpool lanes are so clogged in California, the state could lose federal funding and approval for projects if it doesn’t fix the problem. Under federal law, carpool lane drivers in California must be able to go an average of 45 miles per hour or faster during peak hours. Additionally, over a six-month period, traffic has to go that fast 90 percent of the time. Caltrans explains that means the lane’s average speed can drop below 45 no more than two days a month ...
  • Solo hybrid drivers in carpool lanes amplify gridlock

Allowing single-occupant hybrid cars to use carpool lanes – on some of Los Angeles’ busiest highways during rush hour, no less – creates crushing congestion and about $4,500 per car in adverse social costs annually. That includes increased commute times and carbon dioxide emissions, says a new study in the August edition of the American Economic Journal: Economic Policy. “For commuters, it means further traffic delays, and this becomes a regressive tax on carpoolers – it’s taxing due to their added time,” said study lead author Antonio Bento, associate professor at the Charles H. Dyson School of Applied Economics and...

Seattle Monday became the first city in the country to limit drivers for Lyft, uberX and Sidecar, in what will eventually be an overhaul of all of the city’s ride-service rules. The regulations, approved unanimously by the City Council, will limit each company to 150 drivers on the road at the same time, collectively capping them at 450.
  • Court: Marin man can't use corporate personhood to beat carpool lane ticket

Corporations may have many of the same rights as people, but those rights do not include riding in the carpool lane in Novato. That was the message Monday at Marin County Superior Court traffic hearing, where San Rafael activist Jonathan Frieman appeared to contest a $489 carpool fine. His argument? He was not riding alone in the carpool lane on Highway 101 in October, as alleged by police, because his corporation -- a stack of papers named "JoMiJO Foundation" -- was riding shotgun. Therefore, he was obeying the signs reading, "2 or more persons per vehicle." His lawyer, Ford Greene...

http://www.pfadvice.com/2006/06/21/creative-job-commute-helper/ Creative Job - Commute Helper Sometimes I’m amazed at the creativity of some people who earn a good living filling needs that anyone could do. I was at a gathering today when I struck up a conversation with a man who described his job as a “commute helper.” “OK, what exactly is a commute helper?” I asked “I help people have a smooth and quick commute,” he replied. “How do you do that?” I asked “I sit in their car, ” he said with a smile. This is what happened. If you live in the San Francisco Bay Area,...

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. - Say what you want about police officers, but they are no dummies. The California Highway Patrol gave Kevin Morgan, 28, of Petaluma, a $351 citation for driving in a high occupancy vehicle or "HOV" lane with a kickboxing dummy propped in the passenger seat. The dummy was wearing a Miami Dolphins windbreaker and a baseball cap, but Officer Will Thompson noticed that the "passenger" had no legs. "When I looked inside his window, I thought, 'Oh, that's cute,'" Thompson said. "I didn't even ask him where he got it. I think he was pretty embarrassed because...

They might have been congratulated for their "green" efforts in an area of heavy air pollution. Instead a group of French cleaning ladies who organised a car-sharing scheme to get to work are being taken to court by a coach company which accuses them of "an act of unfair and parasitical competition". The women, who live in Moselle and work five days a week at EU offices in Luxembourg, are being taken to court by Transports Schiocchet Excursions, which runs a service along the route. It wants the women to be fined and their cars confiscated. Two years ago a...

ARLINGTON, Va. – Instead of crawling out of bed at 4 a.m. to beat the morning rush, Frank Murphy sleeps late these days. He says he owes it all to his hybrid car – and a law that has some of his fellow commuters upset. Drivers of the environmentally friendly cars are allowed to cruise solo in Virginia's car pool lanes, slicing Murphy's daily two-hour commute in half. And since buying a hybrid 18 months ago, Murphy is leaving his home as much as three hours later. "The quality of life has gone up tremendously," he said. But Murphy's joy...
  • CA: Arnold backs project - He'll fight for 405 HOV lane if Berman gets federal cash

Under criticism for missing a rare chance to help secure $400 million for a coveted car-pool lane on the 405 Freeway, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger stepped up Wednesday and promised to support the project -- if Van Nuys Rep. Howard Berman can deliver the federal money. Schwarzenegger came through none too soon for Berman, a Democrat, who has been lambasting the governor for failing to commit to the state's 20 percent in matching funds, which are needed to get the project eligible for consideration in the $300 billion federal highway bill now being negotiated on Capitol Hill. "We support your effort...

Owners of hybrid vehicles would be allowed to use carpool lanes -- even when cruising the California freeways alone -- under a bill that passed a key Assembly committee on Monday. The bill, AB2628 by Assemblywoman Fran Pavley, D-Agoura Hills (Los Angeles County), has wide support, including backing from Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and state Treasurer Phil Angelides. It passed the Assembly transportation committee with 11 votes. It would allow drivers of a new generation of hybrid vehicles, such as the Toyota Prius and some versions of the Honda Civic -- which get 45 miles per gallon or better -- access...

He hops in a car, picks up a friend and drives to school. "It's not something we encourage,'' says a deputy. TEMPLE TERRACE -- After he missed the bus Thursday morning, a second-grader hopped behind the wheel of a black 2002 Ford Focus, picked up a friend and headed off for elementary school. "He said he was running late," said Temple Terrace police Capt. Tracy Mishler. The 8-year-old, who could barely see above the dashboard, left his home at the Brentwood Place Apartments off Busch Boulevard and crossed at least one and possibly two major intersections on 56th Street during...
