Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker delivered a powerful address espousing Christian values to a group of graduates at Benedictine College on Saturday. Now, the NFL is saying they disagree with Butker. In his commencement speech, the Butker blasted President Joe Biden for his pro-abortion stances, urged male grads to embrace masculinity, and championed the virtues of motherhood by telling female graduates there is no higher calling than being a homemaker. On Wednesday, in a statement to People, NFL Senior Vice President and Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer Jonathan Beane clarified that Butker’s values are not the NFL’s. “Harrison Butker gave a...

Bud Light has consistently been in the news recently for all the wrong reasons. Roger Goodell's NFL has -- true to form -- joined it there. Despite the Bud Light's inexplicable choice to partner with transgender activist Dylan Mulvaney, the NFL has made the beer company the official sponsor of the NFL Draft. That’s right, on a weekend when the best college football stars will be transitioning to the next phase of their careers, the NFL will be advertising for a company that supports transitioning of the worst kind. It's a match made in progressive heaven! The NFL Draft will...

Washington’s NFL franchise has announced that it is retiring the Redskins name, and plans to introduce a new name soon. Monday’s announcement comes just days after the organization released a statement July 3 saying it would be undertaking a “thorough review” of the team’s name, a process the team said in Monday’s announcement has “begun in earnest.” In an interview July 4, Coach Ron Rivera — who is working with owner Daniel Snyder to choose a name — said he hoped the new name would be in place by the start of the 2020 NFL season. Others have said it...

To @realdonaldtrump Through my ongoing conversations with friends, teammates, and leaders in the black community, I realize this is not an issue about the American flag. It has never been. We can no longer use the flag to turn people away or distract them from the real issues that face our black communities. We did this back in 2017, and regretfully I brought it back with my comments this week. We must stop talking about the flag and shift our attention to the real issues of systemic racial injustice, economic oppression, police brutality, and judicial & prison reform. We are...

Rookie Baker Mayfield entered for his NFL regular-season debut late in the second quarter and brought the Browns back from a 14-0 deficit to prevail 21-17, snapping a 19-game winless streak dating back to Dec. 24, 2016 -- a span of 635 days...

In trying to avoid a national anthem controversy, the NFL has sparked a national anthem controversy. The league is under fire again for rejecting a Super Bowl advertisement from a veterans group that urged people to stand for “The Star-Spangled Banner.” The league invited American Veterans (AMVETS) to place a one-page ad for the Super Bowl LII program, and the completed submission included an American flag alongside the words, “#PleaseStand.” The ad will not run, which now has AMVETS crying censorship. “Freedom of speech works both ways,” AMVETS national commander Marion Polk wrote in a letter to commissioner Roger Goodell...

A few weekends ago, at a seersucker-in-November southern horse-racing event I attended with some lovely and friendly people who will nevertheless be the first ones taken out when the revolution comes, a family friend, an older white man, asked me what I, the one sportswriter he knew, thought of the kneeling NFL players. I told him that while I stand for the anthem myself, I supported the players’ right to express themselves politically and encouraged him to worry less about the kneeling and more about what the players were trying to say. He snorted and said he was done with...

First of all, hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving and secondly, what was going on with the Washington Redskins and the New York Giants last night? Yes, the DC team ended up beating the Giants 20-10 but that was a terrible game on Thursday Night Football. A game that saw more national anthem protests as Giants defensive end Oliver Vernon took a knee during the Star Spangled Banner. Otherwise, were it not for some worthy moves by the Redskins’ QB Kirk Cousins, there wouldn’t have been a lot to see from NBC and the NFL on the holiday night. Which...

Let us cut to the chase: the NFL owns the players' protest because not only has the league failed to hold players accountable, its owners joined in the anti-American protest. Well, virtue signaling has a price. Americans are about to pull tax breaks that the league enjoys. I want to make clear exactly what this protest is about. Colin Kaepernick said: "I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color. To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part...

New York Giants defensive end Olivier Vernon continued his protest on Thursday night, kneeling during the national anthem before a game against the Washington Redskins. Vernon, who has been kneeling since early on in the NFL season, appeared to be the only player to take a knee before the game. He was one of several NFL players who knelt last week. Prior to last Sunday's game against the Kansas City Chiefs, Vernon told Newsday that he would continue kneeling, even as criticism of the protests continues.

Neither rain nor sleet nor a storied football rivalry could keep an angry group of local patriots from turning out on a dank Sunday afternoon during the Bears/Packers game to burn their football jerseys in protest of the way NFL owners have responded to the long-simmering national anthem controversy. Not only did some of these passionate veterans, ranging in age from mid-30s to upper-80s, toss their once beloved jerseys into a metal pit set ablaze near a pond on Aurora's West Side, the charred remains were to be gathered up and mailed to the owners of the teams represented as...

Marketers have put NBCUniversal on notice: Stop covering NFL players' national-anthem protests, or we'll pull our ads. That's according to Linda Yaccarino, the chairman of advertising sales at NBCUniversal, who spoke during a keynote interview at an event held Friday in New York at the ad agency RGA. Yaccarino said no advertisers had pulled out of NFL games because of the protests, but that advertisers were telling the network that could change. "Marketers have said, 'We will not be part of the NFL if you continue covering it,'" Yaccarino said. Since last year, when Colin Kaepernick, the San Francisco 49ers...

A disabled Navy veteran said he declined to accept an award at a New Orleans Saints game due to the controversy over players protesting during the national anthem. The Saints organization was going to honor retired Cmdr. John Wells, the executive director of Military Veterans Advocacy, with the Peoples Health Champion award during last week’s game in New Orleans, according to The Advocate. On Wednesday he told the organization he was unable to accept the award at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome because of the anthem protests. Saints players have been seen kneeling before the anthem and some continue to do so...
