Unexpectedly, a kind of protein that is usually linked with diseases in the brain may play a vital role in semen, helping shepherd genetic material into sperm cells, scientists at Columbia's Zuckerman Institute report today in the research journal Molecular Cell. Dr. Fitzpatrick, an expert on amyloids in brain research, wondered if those fibrils could also help materials naturally in the body enter sperm: specifically, the genetic molecule RNA, which helps turn instructions encoded in DNA into protein molecules. Scientists knew that seminal fluid contains lots of small RNAs, thought to play a major role in what genes are active...

Lee Elder will never forget when a friend asked him to be one of her pallbearers. At 16 years old, he carried her casket. Elder and his friends were members of the Tucson Mountain Congregation in Arizona. After Elder’s friend was diagnosed with leukemia, chemotherapy and radiation made her anemic; as a Witness, she refused the standard treatment of a blood transfusion. Combined with her cancer, she only got sicker until she died in 1976 as a teenager. Elder, the executive director and founder of the Alliance for Jehovah’s Witness Research and Bioethics, stopped being an active Witness in the...

On a hot summer evening in Indianapolis, United States, immigrant families gathered inside Maranatha Haitian Seventh-day Adventist Church to prepare for a possibility many hoped they would never face: being suddenly separated from their children or other dependents because of immigration enforcement. On August 25 two dozen families attended a legal clinic hosted by the church and sponsored by the Coalition for Our Immigrant Neighbors, or COIN. Volunteers helped families prepare legal documents and emergency plans so that trusted individuals could care for minor children, other dependents, and financial matters if parents or caregivers were detained or deported. The clinic...

Daily Readings from the USCCB“Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how many times I yearned to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, but you were unwilling! Behold, your house will be abandoned. But I tell you, you will not see me until the time comes when you say, Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.” Luke 13:34–35In today’s Gospel, Jesus laments Jerusalem’s tragic history of persecuting the prophets sent by God to call His people back to fidelity. The deaths of Zechariah...

"All Scripture is . . . profitable for . . . reproof" (2 Tim. 3:16). Scripture is the standard by which you must measure all teaching. In November of 1978, United States Representative Leo Ryan of California visited the People's Temple (a California- based cult) in Guyana. He went to investigate reports that some of the people were being held there against their will. The world was shocked to learn that the congressman and his party had been ambushed and killed. Even more shocking was the grim discovery that followed a few days later. Authorities who entered the compound at...

With litigation threatening to derail President Trump’s plans for a 250-foot triumphal arch in Washington, two of his top aides on Wednesday submitted sworn statements to a federal court claiming that the arch was needed for national security purposes. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Markwayne Mullin, the homeland security secretary, contended that even though national security was never invoked in the initial proposal for the arch, the project was now needed to keep the United States safe from drone attacks. “The arch is a generational national defense opportunity to mitigate these evolving threats,” Mr. Hegseth told the court. He added...

DETROIT — Days before the Nov. 3 election, the Democratic fiancé of former Senate hopeful Haley Stevens declared he intends to vote for Republican Mike Rogers for U.S. Senate, saying he's become convinced over the last three months that Democrat Abdul El-Sayed is an antisemite. Jason Turkish, a Jewish Democrat and disabilities and civil rights attorney from Huntington Woods, is engaged to be married to U.S. Rep. Stevens of Birmingham, whom El-Sayed narrowly defeated in the Aug. 4 Democratic primary. "I’ve just seen an escalation in his rhetoric since the primary, and it makes folks unsafe. Every time he talks...

They want to seize the means of party production. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s campaign guru admitted the DSA’s ultimate goal is to “take over” the Democratic Party — by running lefty darling Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for president. Andrew Epstein, 38, recently told a Belgian newspaper that the Democratic Socialists of America want to build on victories from over the last year, such as Mamdani’s election and comrades Darializa Avila Chevalier and Claire Valdez soon-to-be joining AOC in Congress. “I think we want to take over the Democratic Party,” he told Dutch-language outlet De Tijd, according to a translation...

WATERVILLE, Maine — Graham Platner supporters are still pining for the disgraced pol just days before the US Senate election, concerned their backup choice lacks the pizzazz needed to mobilize the base. Almost four months after Platner was forced out of his Senate race due to a rape accusation, local Democrats at a rally for his replacement, Troy Jackson, admitted they wished Platner were still on the ticket and regretted how his political career was cut short. “The establishment did not want him to be out there mobilizing people who had never voted before, just for change,” former Waterville Mayor...

DNA connects serial killer Ted Bundy to the death of a Utah teenager, authorities announced Tuesday, more than 50 years after her body was discovered by a hunter. Bundy has been dead since 1989, but the tally of his confirmed victims continues to grow due to advances in DNA testing. He killed at least 30 women and girls in multiple states in the 1970s, and many more escaped or survived with injuries.

Democrat Peggy Flanagan is leading in the Minnesota Senate race against GOP competitor Michele Tafoya, according to a new poll. In The New York Times/Siena University poll, 54 percent of respondents said they were more likely to cast their ballot for Flanagan if Election Day were that day, while 40 percent said the same for Tafoya. Less than half a percent chose another candidate, and 5 percent were unsure of their choice or gave no answer. The double-digit gap between Flanagan and Tafoya is notable, as the Minnesota lieutenant governor was recently holding a slim lead over the former NFL...

Barbara Barrie has died with medical assistance. The Oscar-nominated actress died Wednesday at her home in Manhattan, the New York Times reported. Her daughter, Jane Harnick, said her death was medically assisted after she had been diagnosed with terminal cancer. Barrie was 95 years old. Cancer was not her only health battle. She was diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis in 2014, which, according to the Mayo Clinic, is a degenerative disease that occurs when lung tissue becomes damaged and scarred, making it hard to breathe. SIHANOUKVILLE, Cambodia (AP) — A U.S. cruise ship on an around-the-world voyage that touted its cabins as floating homes suspended its three-year voyage in Cambodia due to fuel costs, forcing hundreds of passengers to disembark. The MV Odyssey set sail two years ago on a voyage to the seven continents marketed as combining long-term living at sea with global travel. Its operator had offered to “make the Odyssey your permanent home,” with the purchase price of a suite for the lifetime of the vessel starting around $230,000. For now, it is docked at the Cambodian port of Sihanoukville on the Gulf...

Ilhan Omar’s first husband was “embarrassed” when her effeminate “brother” — who she is accused of marrying — came to live with them in Minnesota, a family friend told The Post. The congresswoman (D-Minn.) had two young children with Ahmed Hirsi, when she suddenly split from him in 2009. She then quickly married an “extremely feminine Somali guy from London,” Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, fond of wearing short shorts with cowboy boots. She was able to do this as she had only been wed to Ahmed in a 2002 Islamic ceremony which was not recognized by the state. One of...
