California politics gets even carzier. Unlike previous elections for governor, Californiaâs primary is now not based on party preference. Instead, out of whatever field of candidates is on the ballot, the top two vote-getters will face off in November. This was intended to eliminate Republicans from ever being governor -- since the top two would almost always be Democrats. Funny how the poet Robert Burnsâ reference to âBest laid plansâ comes to mind. Todayâs Sample Ballot, courtesy of my countyâs Registrar of Voters, has 63 gubernatorial candidates -- with about a dozen being Republicans. Many of the others are keeping...

Investigate him. Impeach him. Indict him. Demonize him. When none of it works â what comes next? For nearly a decade, Donald Trump has been the most investigated, scrutinized, and politically targeted figure in modern American history. Thatâs not hyperbole. Itâs his rĂ©sumĂ©. From the moment he descended the escalator in June 2015, the full apparatus of opposition snapped into place. Not routine political disagreement or opposition research, but something far more sustained: intelligence leaks, media narratives, fabricated dossiers, bureaucratic resistance, and cultural condemnation, all rowing in the same direction. The premise was simple. Something would stick. Anything would stick....

Iranâs Fars news agency, citing local sources, reports two missiles hit a US navy vessel near Jask island after it ignored warnings from the Revolutionary Guard to halt. The reported attack comes after President Trump said the US will begin âProject Freedomâ on Monday to âguideâ stranded ships out of the Strait of Hormuz. US Central Command said it would support the effort with 15,000 military personnel, more than 100 land and sea-based aircraft, along with warships and drones.

Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch said the Supreme Court system is âworkingâ in a Sunday interview where he reflected on the countryâs founding principles. .... âAmericans file about 50 million lawsuits a year, and you give us the 70 hardest ones, where lower court judges have disagreed about what the law means about a statute or a provision of the Constitution dictates in a particular case â there are nine of us. Can you get nine people to agree on where to go to lunch?â he asked Bream. âAll right, weâve been appointed by five different presidents over 30 years,...

The delay in Dick Advocaat becoming Curaçaoâs head coach might have been ominous but instead it was the foundation for glory. Frustrated by the national federationâs financial problems, he deferred starting until January 2024, when the problems were resolved and players paid, paving the way for a historic World Cup qualifying campaign. Curaçao will be the smallest nation â by land area and population â to play at the World Cup after their 0-0 draw in Jamaica on Wednesday. The Caribbean island has a population of 156,000, sinking the previous record holders, Iceland, which has about 400,000 inhabitants. Last month...

Daily Readings from the USCCBJesus said to his disciples: âWhoever has my commandments and observes them is the one who loves me. Whoever loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and reveal myself to him.âJohn 14:21Most people would not think of âloveâ as obedience to commandments. Yet, that is precisely how Jesus defines it. To understand the truthfulness of His teaching, we must first consider the nature of love. Saint Thomas Aquinas defines love as both an emotion and an action. As an emotion, it is part of our human nature and is the...

"Having summoned His twelve disciples, [Jesus] gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every kind of disease and every kind of sickness. Now the names of the twelve apostles were these" (Matt. 10:1-2). Every disciple must also be a discipler. Have you ever met someone who constantly absorbs what the church has to offer, yet never seems to plug into a ministry where he can give to others? I've met many people like that. Some have attended church for many years, and have even taken evangelism and other special training classes. But they never...

Six supreme court justices handed down a ruling built, ostensibly, on the belief that the US has changed so much as to render the protections of the Voting Rights Act unnecessary. No one should be that gullible. In 1901, the same year my great-grandfather was born, George H White rose to address the 56th United States Congress for the last time. He was a Republican congressman from North Carolina â the only Black member of the entire body. He was leaving because the state he represented had passed legislation making his re-election impossible. Reconstruction had already been undone. The powers that...

Here is the unvarnished truth that has been kept secret by the choices of important people. At present population levels, there may be more than enough energy in the world for the next 100,000 years (maybe for millions of years) that is relatively easy to obtain, clean, and safe, and that would be productive of peace among men, because there would be fewer fights over resources. The fuel of the future is thorium, and it is being withheld from the world because too few people know about it to demand itâand thereâs no reason for this ignorance. Why the secrecy?...

Former Rep. Barney Frank spent decades as one of the Democratic Partyâs most recognizable left-wing figures. Now, in what may be one of his final public warnings, he is telling Democrats that their loudest activists have pushed the party into territory the public simply is not buying. Frankâs warning, delivered as he enters hospice, is blunt. He is not attacking the left from the right. He is saying the left has made a strategic mess of things by turning its most controversial causes into purity tests and then acting surprised when voters balk. âI think weâre in a situation where...

Grammy-winning rapper Prakazrel âPrasâ Michel of the Fugees has reported to federal prison to begin a 14-year sentence following a conviction over illegally funneling millions of dollars in foreign contributions to former President Barack Obamaâs 2012 reelection campaign. Michel reported to prison Thursday, a spokesperson said, with federal records listing him as an inmate at a low-security correctional institution in Arizona. âToday is a painful day for Pras, for his family, and for everyone who believes in a fair system of justice. Pras honors the legal process as he reports to begin his sentence,â said Erica Dumas, a spokesperson for...

The Labor Department said Thursday that U.S. initial unemployment claims totaled 189,000 for the week ending April 25, down 26,000 from a revised prior-week figure of 215,000. That is the lowest reading in more than 50 years, according to The Associated Press, citing research firm High Frequency Economics, which said the figure was the fewest new applications since September 1969. Analysts had projected 212,000 applications for the week, according to Bloomberg. At 207,500, the four-week moving average â a measure designed to reduce week-to-week volatility â was 3,500 below the previous week's revised figure. For the week ending April 18,...
