A New Study For A New Year: Personalities

Numbers 27:1-8

27 Then came the daughters of Zelophehad, the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, of the families of Manasseh the son of Joseph: and these are the names of his daughters; Mahlah, Noah, and Hoglah, and Milcah, and Tirzah.

2 And they stood before Moses, and before Eleazar the priest, and before the princes and all the congregation, by the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, saying,

3 Our father died in the wilderness, and he was not in the company of them that gathered themselves together against the Lord in the company of Korah; but died in his own sin, and had no sons.

4 Why should the name of our father be done away from among his family, because he hath no son? Give unto us therefore a possession among the brethren of our father.

5 And Moses brought their cause before the Lord.

6 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,

7 The daughters of Zelophehad speak right: thou shalt surely give them a possession of an inheritance among their father's brethren; and thou shalt cause the inheritance of their father to pass unto them.

8 And thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel, saying, If a man die, and have no son, then ye shall cause his inheritance to pass unto his daughter.

Our Father in Heaven
Hallowed be Your Most Holy Name!
How We Long For Your Kingdom,

Here on earth, as it already is, in Heaven!

When the finest Secret Agent in the "Agency" suddenly resigned, the Agency whisked him off to a remote island, where other "retired" Secret Agents were imprisoned. It was a delightful community, with manicured gardens, peaceful music, and little activities to keep the retirees busy. Each retiree was assigned a number, and that became his or her identity for the rest of his or her life.

The most recent "prisoner" was assigned Number 6, but he was having none of it. In the opening sequence, he declares:

"I AM NOT A NUMBER! I AM A FREE MAN!"

Many of you will recognize this story from the short-lived British TV Series called "THE PRISONER". It was one of my favorites.

Once, back in the early 2000s, my husband and I took a wrong turn in Kissimmee FL, and ended up in a "Planned Community". I felt like a square peg, riding my Harley in my grubbies, passing by rows and rows of perfect little houses, that were fake Victorian, complete with plastic gingerbread architectural doo-dads and fol-de-rols, perfect lawns of the same exact height, cute little wrought iron lampposts with curly cues and flourishes, and...no people. Round and round we rode, as we couldn't find the way out. It was a nightmare!

Finally, as we found the EXIT, I exclaimed to my husband:

"I AM NOT A NUMBER! I AM A FREE MAN!"

Today we read a Bible Story in the Book of Numbers that is not well known. Many People, when reading the Bible for the first time, skim or even skip the Book of Numbers, because of all the...well you know...all the NUMBERS. But there are a lot of great stories between the numbers, and this is one of them.

Moses is busy planning about who gets what in the Promised Land. Although there are only Twelve Tribes, there are many clans and families within each Tribe, and Moses merrily begins to allot the land according to the custom of the day, to the First Born Sons, and then on down the line.

But there was a man who had no sons, but who was blessed (like Tevye) with five Daughters. The Name of the man was Zelophehad, and his Daughters were Mahlah, Noah, and Hoglah, and Milcah, and Tirzah.

The man had died in the desert with the first generation that had left Egypt. Now these ladies faced losing everything, as they would have been married off into various tribes and join those families instead of having their own inheritance.

They brought their petition to Moses, and Moses brought it before God.

God's answer was revolutionary and unexpected, considering the times and the culture.

"The daughters of Zelophehad speak right"

God's answer becomes encoded as Law, and Zelophehad's Daughters (who ALL had Names, they were NOT "Numbers") become Property Owners in The Promised Land, with all the Rights, Privileges, and Responsibilities that go with that. It was a cause for Celebration.

But, Please, Ladies...NO PLASTIC GINGERBREAD!

I always thought Number 6 had a meaning, the number of a man—Revelation 13:18.
