Alexis Avila received a 16-year sentence after she was seen on camera throwing her newborn in the trash bin behind a Hobbs shopping center. Three people digging through the trash found the baby alive. The New Mexico Court of Appeals upheld her conviction last year, but she asked the New Mexico Supreme Court to hear the case.
