Road Trip: Naval Support Facility Thurmont, Maryland

Camp David is the country retreat for the President of the United States. It is located in the wooded hills of Catoctin Mountain Park, in Frederick County, Maryland, near the towns of Thurmont, and Emmitsburg, about 62 miles north-northwest of the national capital city of Washington, D.C.

It is officially known as the Naval Support Facility Thurmont. Because it is technically a military installation, the staffing is primarily provided by the Seabees, Civil Engineer Corps (CEC), the United States Navy and the United States Marine Corps. Naval construction battalions are tasked with base construction and send detachments as needed.

Originally known as Hi-Catoctin, Camp David was built as a camp for federal government agents and their families by the Works Progress Administration. Construction started in 1935 and was completed in 1938. The Catoctin Mountain Park does not indicate the location of Camp David on park maps due to privacy and security concerns, although it can be seen through the use of publicly accessible satellite images.

The NSF Thurmont Operations and Management team provides fire, emergency, safety and security services for the base and local community. This team of focused professionals maintains a working relationship with mission commands and the local community first responders. Presidential, First Family and guest visits are coordinated with absolute professionalism and courtesy.

Orange One is a U.S. Navy–operated facility located in the Appalachian Mountains, extending underneath Camp David, the U.S. President's country retreat. Described in one account as a "fortress", it was designed for use by the president as a military headquarters during an emergency.

It’s pretty chilly here, but still 39 and got up to about 52 this afternoon. Not bad at all. And, no, I didn’t go out except to feed the kitties.

Ready for the crazy weather this weekend? Buffy might decide to use her “house”.

I’m getting ready in case I get stuck here for a few days; hopefully not more.

The rodeo events might not happen this weekend from what I’ve seen. Ice, big time. They THINK we’ll get clobbered with snow but depending on how the storm system tracks, we could get ice too. I do NOT want an ice storm!!!!
With luck we can both get through this mess in good shape.

It made it up to 40 this afternoon, with no wind, so I headed out to stock up on some stuff in case it gets really bad this weekend. Afterwards, I checked on the well house to make sure everything is ok and yuck. It was time to change that water filter!
So no, I didn’t stay in. LOL With no wind, it wasn’t all that bad.

It’s down to 27 here and supposed to bottom out in the low teens or colder. :-(

Good weekend, son came over Saturday night for dinner and hanging and the rest of the weekend was uneventful.

How about you and the kittehs?

I guess I’m as ready as I can be, I guess. We’ll go from 63 on Thursday to 26 on Saturday with maybe some frozen stuff. Ack. Head on swivel. I won’t be getting out for much, that’s for sure.

Smart of you to get your running done and getting stocked up. Those teen temps don’t sound good at all! 🥶
