… As the foregoing history suggests, the fundamental legal framework that governs the broadcast industry sets it apart from other media. In broadcasting, the Federal Government grants exclusive free speech rights to licensees, while denying such freedom to others. To justify this privileged treatment, Congress and the courts have mandated that licensees serve as “public trustees” of the airwaves. The public trustee model has given rise to a distinct genre of First Amendment jurisprudence. Unlike newspapers and magazines, broadcasters have affirmative statutory and regulatory obligations to serve the public in specific ways. Despite the philosophical complications and political tensions that...

A day after President Donald Trump endorsed the prospect of designating Antifa as a domestic terrorist organization, Washington State Republican Party Chair Jim Walsh says he is convinced, like the president, that many Antifa protesters are “paid agitators.” “We've seen examples of that sort of behavior here in Washington,” Walsh texted The Center Square on Tuesday. The movement has historical roots in the Pacific Northwest, including forming one of the nation's earliest modern such groups, Rose City Antifa, in Portland, Ore., in 2007. On Monday, The Center Square asked the president if he would designate Antifa a domestic terror organization...

President Donald Trump celebrated the abrupt cancelation of Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Wednesday night with a blistering Truth Social post that cheered the end of the ABC late-night show. The gut contains the largest collection of immune cells in the body. New research shows that some of those immune cells travel along the brain/gut axis in a mouse model of Alzheimer's disease (AD), providing a potential new therapeutic pathway for the memory-robbing malady. The research also shows that feeding the mice a high-fiber diet reduces AD-related frailty, including tremor. Priya Makhijani, Ph.D. found that specific antibody-producing B cells, normally responsible for keeping the microbiome and the gut immune system in harmony, were reduced in the mice bred to develop AD. She also discovered this cell type has a migratory...

Poland’s President Karol Nawrocki has said Germany could begin repaying World War II reparations by financing the development of Poland’s defense industry and military capacity. Nawrocki made the remarks on Tuesday during a press briefing following visits to Berlin and Paris. In Germany, he met with president Frank-Walter Steinmeier and chancellor Friedrich Merz, where they discussed bilateral trade, European Union policy, and the issue of reparations. “I am in favor of Germany paying reparations to Poland,” the president said. He added that he had suggested Berlin could help finance Polish defense as part of a long-term settlement. “I suggested that...

The mistake conservatives make is yearning for Democrats of yore, when they supposedly had their civil feet on the ground. The morning before Charlie Kirk’s murder, I told my sisters that the big myth was that the Democrats used to be safe Americans. You know, patriotic, God-fearing, moral, anti-crime, proponents of free speech, totally in with the Constitution. Forget that. Leftists hate those points to the extreme, cheering Kirk’s killing as revenge for brilliantly lauding conservative values. If lefties couldn’t beat Courageous Kirk in debate, which was impossible at campuses throughout the country and even in England, then gun him...

A woman claiming to be the wife of President Donald Trump was arrested Tuesday for attempting to enter Mar-a-Lago, the Palm Beach Police Department said. The incident occurred just after noon at 1100 S. Ocean Blvd. Police said they received a call regarding an "unwanted guest" that wanted to drop off a letter to the president. When police arrived, they were told by a United States Secret Service agent that a woman verbally identified as Christy Renee Kimbrell wanted to meet with the president. Police said they immediately recognized Kimbrell, 49, from previous encounters at Mar-a-Lago. When police asked her...

From guiding young filmmakers to embarking on campaigns for the NRDC, the artist cut an altruistic path through thickets rarely entered. In 2012, Robert Redford was meeting with a reporter about a movie he did with Shia LaBeouf when the question of how to do good in Hollywood came up. The actor-director had two answers. The first, he said, was not to take celebrity too seriously. The second was not to live there. “By coming and going, by doing the work and leaving, by dropping bombs in enemy territory and getting out,” he said. Such an attitude might seem strange for...

The anti-Israel Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sanchez, is under fire from Israel and Spaniards alike for his alleged comments to use nuclear weapons against the Jewish state. The socialist Prime Minister Sanchez, said in a speech last week that "Spain, as you know, doesn’t have nuclear bombs, aircraft carriers, or large oil reserves," adding, "We alone can’t stop the Israeli offensive. But that doesn’t mean we won’t stop trying. Because there are causes worth fighting for, even if winning them isn’t in our sole power." Israel’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, accused his Spanish counterpart of making a "blatant genocidal...

Senate Republicans are calling foul on Senate Democrats' opposition to the GOP’s short-term plan to keep the government funded, calling it hypocritical. House Republicans on Tuesday unveiled their seven-week funding extension, known as a continuing resolution (CR), which congressional Republicans argue is as "clean" as can be. That means that the bill largely lacks any additional spending or policy riders. But Senate Democrats have dug in deep on their rejection of the proposal, increasing the likelihood of a government shutdown come Sept.30. It comes after Democrats previously warned Republicans not to use government funding as a political weapon when Democrats...

“When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to Him, ‘They have no wine.’ And Jesus said to her, ‘Woman, what does that have to do with us? My hour has not yet come.’ His mother said to the servants, ‘Whatever He says to you, do it’” (John 2:3–5). Returning to the wedding at Cana we come across a major crisis—the wine ran out because the supply was insufficient. This potential embarrassment for the couple and their families could have stigmatized them for the rest of their lives. Mary was apparently helping to oversee the catering of the...
