THE black box on the Jeju Air jet that crashed in South Korea stopped recording data just minutes before the disaster, officials said. The crash at Muan International Airport on December 29 killed 179 people on board after the plane hit a wall at the end of the runway after an emergency landing and exploded into a fireball. As authorities investigate the worst airline disaster on South Korean soil, the transport ministry revealed that flight data and cockpit voice recorders stopped processing data four minutes before the crash. The ministry is now investigating how the aircraft's black boxes - which...

Two wounded North Korean soldiers have been captured as prisoners of war by Ukrainian troops in Russia's Kursk Oblast, President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Saturday. The two men are receiving "necessary medical assistance" and are in the custody of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) in Kyiv, according to Zelensky. The president said he was "grateful" to Ukrainian paratroopers and soldiers from the Special Operation Forces for capturing the North Koreans. He added that "this was not an easy task", claiming that Russian and North Korean soldiers usually execute wounded North Koreans "to erase any evidence of North Korea's involvement...

A lawsuit recently filed by Utah, Texas, and Last Energy (a microreactor company) is challenging a Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) rule requiring all nuclear power-producing entities—including those that do not generate enough electricity to turn on a lightbulb—to obtain an operating license from the commission before turning on. If successful, the lawsuit could diminish the federal government's role in the heavily regulated nuclear energy industry. The requirement, known as the Utilization Facility Rule, can be traced back to the McMahon Act of 1946. This law gave the government a monopoly on nuclear power by granting federal regulators licensing authority over...

Ohio State will meet Notre Dame for the national title. The Buckeyes defense stopped Texas near the goal line with less than three minutes to go as Jack Sawyer’s fumble return with 2:13 remaining gave the Buckeyes a 28-14 win over the Longhorns in Friday night’s Cotton Bowl. Sawyer stripped Quinn Ewers on fourth down and recovered the ball himself before officially running it 83 yards for the score.

Vegans could be more likely to be depressed because they drink plant-based milk, a study suggests. However, fans of semi-skimmed drinks are at a lower risk of both anxiety and depression. Data was gathered from more than 350,000 people enrolled in a UK Biobank study who were followed for more than a decade and assessed for signs of mental health issues. It found that when age, health and income are taken into account, those who drink semi-skimmed milk are 12 per cent less likely to be depressed and 10 per cent less likely to have anxiety. Drinking skimmed milk, however,...

Not long after Justin Trudeau became the prime minister of Canada in 2015, he made a big announcement. Without any prompting, Trudeau said something no other Canadian prime minister has ever said. He declared that Canada, as a nation, doesn’t really exist. He came out and casually admitted something Americans have known for a long time, which is that Canada is a fake country. Speaking to a reporter with The New York Times, Trudeau explained that, “There is no core identity, no mainstream in Canada. There are shared values … Those qualities are what make us the first postnational state.”...

Special Dispatches to the New-York Times WASHINGTON, Tuesday, Jan. 10. MR. FESSENDEN's LETTER. Secretary FESSENDEN to-day communicated his letter to the Committee of Ways and Means. As we intimated, in our dispatches of last evening, he asked for a modification of the present law to enable him to issue two hundred millions more of seven-thirty bonds. The committee postponed its consideration until to-morrow, when it will probably be reported immediately back and put upon its passage, as the Secretary indicates that speedy action should be taken upon it. THE CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT. The vote on the constitutional amendment will be postponed...

Do you carry a gun?Bad idea, says Hollywood. Civilians with guns are fools. You are more likely to hurt yourself than the bad guy.“Leave it to a good guy with a gun to really screw things up,” says a cop on ABC’s “The Rookie.”Liberal politicians agree.“A good guy with a gun will stop bad guys with a gun?! It doesn’t hold up,” smiles New York Gov. Kathy Hochul.“An adolescent rescue fantasy,” adds an “expert” on CBS.Now, I’m not a gun person. I was raised among lefty gun haters. I assumed Hollywood and “experts” were right. When I saw economist John Lott’s...

“After He had fasted forty days and forty nights, He then became hungry” (Matthew 4:2). For a quite lengthy period prior to the three diabolical temptations directed at Jesus, He fasted. We don’t know exactly what He did during the forty-day period, but He likely spent most of the time communing with His heavenly Father. Even in His perfect humanity, Jesus needed solitary preparation time in meditation and prayer, as we all do in anticipating a major testing. Consider how Moses spent forty years in Midian in preparation for his leadership of Israel out of Egypt to the Promised Land,...

PANAMA CITY, Fla.—CNN’s lead attorney, dealing with a jury that appeared bored as he grilled a Navy veteran over his finances, pivoted toward an explosive charge on Thursday. He effectively accused Zachary Young of lying when he testified that he hadn’t worked since CNN aired a segment accusing him of operating in an "illegal black market." The attorney, David Axelrod, produced a document he said was a contract between Young and an employer, Helios Global Inc., that was signed one month after the November 2021 segment ran. He argued that the case wouldn’t have gone to trial if Young had...

During an interview with “CBS Evening News” that took place on Thursday and was released on Friday, LAFD Chief Kristin Crowley denied that diversity initiatives have harmed the department’s ability to respond to emergencies like the recent fires and stated, “my number one priority is making sure that we can take care of the community that we took an oath to take care of, and with that is our ability to respond to emergencies.” Crowley stated, “My top three priorities since day one [have] been this, I want to clearly articulate that: The number one priority from day one is...

I miss the old pre-cardiac Mark Steyn Show because I felt we provided a useful alternative to the third-rate gossip about who's going to be next week's Lord Privy Seal that passes for news coverage in a dying Britain. So, instead of my usual as-I-said-twenty-years-ago routine, here's a moment from the as-I-said-a-mere-two-and-a-half-years-ago files. This focuses on just one case - that of a girl called Samantha. Not Samantha from Rotherham or Samantha from Telford (who will be my honoured guests on April's Mark Steyn Cruise), but Samantha from Oldham. That every town in England appears to have a gang-raped Samantha...

Daily Readings from the USCCB“Rabbi, the one who was with you across the Jordan, to whom you testified, here he is baptizing and everyone is coming to him.” John 3:26 John the Baptist had amassed quite a following. People kept coming to Him to be baptized, and many wanted his ministry to grow. However, once Jesus began His own public ministry, some of the followers of John became jealous. But John gave the right answer to them. He explained to them that his life and mission was to prepare people for Jesus. Now that Jesus had begun His ministry, John...

Join with fellow FREEPERS across the world to pray for AMERICA: For those in Authority in Government, Family, Military, Business, Agri-Business, Healthcare, Education, Churches, Technology, and the Media. I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone: for kings and all those in authority that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. (1 Timothy 2:1-2) AS WE BEGIN A NEW YEAR WE DO NOT KNOW THE FUTURE BUT WE KNOW WHO HOLDS THE FUTURE AS IT SAYS IN PSALM 139:16 YOUR EYES SAW MY UNFORMED BODY; ALL...

An unhinged tourist from Chile beat a man to death with a fire extinguisher — all because the victim tried to calm him down as he was getting kicked out of a Florida motel, officials said. Piero Estefano But-Castillo, 25, fatally stomped and pounded Robert Krusinowski, 55, at a Quality Inn in Kissimmee, Florida on Wednesday, according to the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office. But-Castillo had just arrived in the United States on a 90-day tourist visa from Chile on Jan.1, Fox35 reported. The alleged maniac flew off the handle when he was told that he would be evicted from the...

Donald Trump promised on the campaign trail to make war against the deep state. Now it seems the first battle may take place on home ground: the White House. Congressional and intelligence sources tell Tablet that the candidate slotted in for the top intelligence spot on the National Security Council is ill suited to serve the president’s agenda. Adam Howard, reportedly the front-runner for the NSC’s senior director for intelligence, is currently staff director for the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence (HPSCI), chaired by Republican Congressman Mike Turner. According to several current congressional sources, multiple House members have raised...

A Los Angeles fire chief has blasted the city's mayor Karen Bass for 'failing' fire crews and communities devastated by the ongoing wildfires. Fire Chief Kirstin Crowley took aim at the city's leadership during an interview with KTTV on Friday, admitting it had failed those affected by the fires and prevented the LA Fire Department from effectively doing its job. 'We are screaming to be properly funded to make sure that our firefighters can do their jobs so that we can serve the community,' Crowley said, adding that there were 'huge gaps' in firefighters' ability to tackle the blazes on...

"'Climate Change' has been identified: it's a 28-YO man from Reseda in a black hoodie holding a lighter and some matches." — Peach Keenan. “Life imitates art,” Oscar Wilde quipped, a most insightful glimpse into the human condition delivered as a wise-crack. Very Hollywood. Too bad there were no late-night talk shows in Oscar’s time. It took more than eighty years, but the apocalyptic burning of Los Angeles depicted at the climax of Nathanial West’s 1939 novel The Day of the Locust has finally come — the city of dreams turned into one big flaming nightmare. The adumbrations of this...
