Harvard University announced yesterday (Tuesday) that it would no longer comment as an institution on issues that do not relate to its “core function” following the controversies surrounding the school's statements on the massacre of October 7 and the subsequent war between Israel and the Hamas terrorist organization. Interim Harvard President Alan M. Garber wrote in an email that Harvard would adopt the recommendation of a working group that the school not “issue official statements about public matters that do not directly affect the university’s core function.” “There will be close cases where reasonable people disagree about whether a given...

Human societies used to have roughly stable populations, with high mortality matched by high fertility. In England and Wales in the 18th and 19th centuries, death rates plummeted. But fertility did not. The result was a population explosion, until, at last, fertility rates also collapsed As the benefits of economic growth and advances in medicine and public health spread, most of the world has followed a similar transition, but far faster. As a result, human numbers rose fourfold over the last hundred years, from 2bn to 8bn. In time, however, fertility followed mortality. The result has been plummeting fertility rates...

"The arrogance of the West, which stems from its power, has prevented its rulers and clerics from understanding many facts that could have helped [it] to better handle its struggle [with the Muslims] and to form ties with them based on understanding rather than conflict. The arrogant West did not understand that the Muslims have a cultural identity and role, and that whoever wants peace and cooperation [with them] in order to realize shared goals must understand this [identity and role]. The Muslims' identity obligates them to perform the tasks of da'wa [preaching Islam] and jihad in order to make...

The phrase “pension benefits” may come up a lot in the next several days as negotiations between the United Auto Workers union and the Big Three automakers go down to the wire to avert a strike. But for most private-sector US workers, pensions disappeared long ago. In a traditional pension, employers contribute, invest and manage retirement funds for their workers, who then receive guaranteed monthly checks for life after they retire. But over the past several decades, employers have either closed or frozen their pensions and turned instead to retirement savings vehicles like the 401(k), which put much more of...

Jackson police Chief Joseph Wade says investigators have identified two people of interest in connection with a carjacking that was recorded by a Ring doorbell camera. The video from Friday shows two people creeping up and firing shots at a family as they were saying their goodbyes in the driveway of their West Jackson home. "I threw my hands up like, 'Hey, hey, hey,' and he just pulled me down," Heather Allen said. Allen and one of her sons were outside the car, but inside were her oldest son, daughter and two grandchildren. "They kept hollering, 'Give me the keys,...

France has a long history of citizens butting heads with the government, and it looks like they're starting to run out of ways for how that can manifest itself. That's because right now, people are upset with a $1.5 billion plan to clean up the River Seine ahead of the Paris Olympics so that it can be used for long-distance swimming events like in 1900. So, how are they planning on protesting? Well, if you guessed an organized effort to all rip deuces in the Seine on the day that the President of France and Mayor of Paris said they'd...

It has been an article of faith for nearly a century, as if chiseled onto a tablet by Abner Doubleday himself: The leading hitter in major league history is, and always will be, Tyrus Raymond Cobb. But history evolves. We know that Doubleday did not, in fact, invent baseball. And as of Wednesday, Josh Gibson will replace Cobb as the leading hitter in the official records of the game. At .372, Gibson’s career batting average eclipses Cobb’s by six points.

Lexi Thompson’s history with the U.S. Women’s Open began as a prodigious 12-year-old when she became the youngest to ever compete in the championship in 2007. Though she’s never won this event, it seems fitting that she makes a big life announcement at this event. In the lead-up to the 79th U.S. Women’s Open at Lancaster Country Club, Thompson announced her retirement on the USGA’s website. The 29-year-old plans to play out the rest of the 2024 season. Thompson, who has battled a hand injury for some time, has won 11 times on the LPGA, including the 2014 Chevron Championship,...

On Tuesday’s broadcast of the Fox Business Network’s “Cavuto: Coast to Coast,” White House Senior Adviser Amos Hochstein stated that the Biden administration “made enormous progress to advance renewable energy in this country, to advance electric vehicles, but that’s not the solution for everyday people on a day-to-day basis, for lower prices,” but it’s “about moving the economy towards a cleaner and more efficient energy economy.” Host Edward Lawrence asked, “Does the President still want to keep moving forward with the speed of his forced transition as quickly as it has been?”

Rashida Tlaib on Sunday blasted President Biden’s handling of Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza, deriding him as an "enabler" of genocide while speaking at an event attended by at least one member of a designated terrorist organization and funded by an asset of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). The event, the People’s Conference for Palestine was held over the weekend in Detroit, and featured, among other speakers, Wisam Rafeedie, an activist with ties to the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), which the U.S. has designated a foreign terrorist organization.
