National security spokesperson John Kirby on Thursday made clear that President Biden would veto a bill that includes only funding for Israel’s war against Hamas if it were sent to his desk instead of a combination aid package he’s proposed that would also help Ukraine. “The president would veto an Israel-only bill. I think we have made that clear,” Kirby said when pressed on if Biden would be against a clean Israel funding bill. House Republicans have unveiled a bill that would provide $14.3 billion in aid for Israel, in exchange for cuts to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) that...

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) on Thursday said the House will consider Ukraine aid “in short order,” while reiterating that he wants to pair funding for Kyiv with U.S. border security. The comment came after Johnson split Ukraine aid from funding for Israel, a move that frustrated lawmakers on both sides of the aisle. He has said Congress “cannot waste any time” moving the $14.3 billion Israel package. The White House unveiled a roughly $100 billion supplemental request last month that includes funding for Ukraine, Israel, border security and allies in the Indo-Pacific, but some Republicans have objected to combining funding...

Explanation: Named for the southern constellation toward which most of its galaxies can be found, the Fornax Cluster is one of the closest clusters of galaxies. About 62 million light-years away, it's over 20 times more distant than our neighboring Andromeda Galaxy, but only about 10 percent farther along than the better known and more populated Virgo Galaxy Cluster. Seen across this three degree wide field-of-view, almost every yellowish splotch on the image is an elliptical galaxy in the Fornax cluster. Elliptical galaxies NGC 1399 and NGC 1404 are the dominant, bright cluster members toward the bottom center. A standout,...

American public support for the Biden administration’s “as long as it takes” policy on aiding Ukraine is collapsing, according to a new Gallup poll. The poll, released Thursday, showed that a plurality of Americans — 41 percent — say that the U.S. is doing too much to help Ukraine. That is a dramatic rise from just 29 percent in June 2023 and 24 percent in August 2022. In addition, fewer — 33 percent now versus 43 percent in June — say the U.S. is doing the right amount, and only 25 percent say the U.S. is not doing enough.

Israel does not have the right to defend itself, Russia’s representative to the United Nations said on Wednesday. The United States and its allies are hypocritical for talking “about Israel’s alleged right for self-defense, which, as an occupying state, it does not have, as was confirmed by the [U.N.’s] International Court [of Justice] consultative ruling in 2004,” Ambassador Vasily Nebenzya told a U.N. General Assembly special session on the Israel-Hamas war. The ICJ’s 2004 advisory opinion stated that Israel could not invoke an inherent right to self-defense under Article 51 of the U.N. Charter against any threat coming from an...
