What will President Biden do if his son is indicted by the federal prosecutor in Delaware? That’s one of three questions looming over U.S. Attorney David Weiss’ fateful choice. The second is whether the indictment will go after a larger, coordinated family scheme of influence peddling or confine itself to smaller, tightly-confined issues like lying to get a gun permit and not registering as a foreign lobbyist. The third is whether Attorney General Merrick Garland will approve Weiss’ proposed charges. Significant political calculations follow from those decisions. It’s easy enough to answer what Garland will do. He has little choice...

The wholly synthetic mRNA vaccines for Covid-19 saved nearly 20 million lives in just their first year of use, according to data published in 2022 by The Lancet. That success stands as the most prominent example of the power of synthetic biology, a field whose possibilities have excited me since I first heard the term more than 15 years ago. As scientists gain increasing dexterity in manipulating the basic elements of life, they are designing not only other synthetic vaccines, but also therapies for cancer, benign alternatives to fossil fuels, and even novel approaches to protecting endangered species. Some of...

(LifeSiteNews) — Individuals, including children, caught up in the current trans craze who have had their bodies medically and surgically mutilated and their personalities altered via social “affirmation” are nothing more than stepping stones to launch an even more macabre form of existence: transhumanism. Once considered to be nothing more than a cultish fringe ideology belonging more to the world of science fiction than reality, “transhumanism” is now being driven into reality by governments, multinational corporations, global banks, international law firms, and of course, Silicon Valley. What is transhumanism? It’s a movement that seeks to create humans with augmented capabilities...

News that a bite from the lone star tick can cause a severe allergy to eating red meat has given a boost to the World Economic Forum's (WEF) vision of switching the human diet away from beef and toward eating insects. WEF founder Klaus Schwab called the bug "an unexpected ally in our battle to save the planet from humanity. Ideally, people would altruistically switch their diets away from foods that contribute to climate change. As we know, though, habits of long tenure are hard to break. If we can accelerate the rate of tick bites or develop a vaccine...

ESA / Hubble & NASA Physicists believe most of the matter in the universe is made up of an invisible substance that we only know about by its indirect effects on the stars and galaxies we can see. We’re not crazy! Without this “dark matter”, the universe as we see it would make no sense. But the nature of dark matter is a longstanding puzzle. However, a new study by Alfred Amruth at the University of Hong Kong and colleagues, published in Nature Astronomy, uses the gravitational bending of light to bring us a step closer to understanding. Invisible but...

Finland There are an estimated 1.5 million licensed firearms in Finland, the country's interior ministry reports, in a nation of just 5.6 million. This high rate of gun ownership is due to an activity widely seen in Finland (and many other nations): hunting. Finns "have hunted and fished for food for thousands of years," Slate reports, and "hunting remains a popular weekend, or even after-work, activity." Finland's large area provides ample space for the hunting industry to flourish. Despite this, Finland has had less than five documented cases of mass shootings. This is because, like most of the Nordic countries,...

And we aren't prepared for it.A Chinese study says that tracking the H3N2 canine influenza virus for 10 years has shown adaptions that allow the dog flu to recognize a human-like receptor. The virus originally spawned from the bird flu and has stabilized within canines, although there’s still no jump to humans. Continued adaptation in mammals could mean an eventual threat to humans. The so-called dog flu may be moving ever closer to infecting humans, according to a new Chinese study. The H3N2 avian influenza virus—highly contagious and lethal in the bird population—successfully jump to dogs around 2006. And it...

Politics ruin everything, including the criminal justice system. The problem with convicting members of the "western chauvinist" Proud Boys on seditious conspiracy charges is that it wrongly elevates a violent tantrum by a bunch of thugs to the level of an insurrection, and it lets officials who prosecute them puff themselves up as saviors of the republic. Worse, the case took liberties with a statute that is probably best forgotten to arrive at its conclusion when normal criminal law could have punished rioters without putting the criminal justice system through contortions. "A jury in the District of Columbia today returned guilty...
